left; unicode-bidi: bidi-override; direction: ltr"> <p>Little less than six months away from a scheduled U.S. troops’ withdrawal, Iraqi public cannot wait to see the occupiers leave and their national sovereignty restored. Yet unwillingly they expect a continued U.S. presence as few believe the Americans will leave such a deeply-invested and strategically-important place. </p> <p>For Iraqis, the debate on U.S. troops’ departure is intertwined with national dignity, security uncertainty and wariness of its coveting neighbors. Some doubt Iraqi security forces have the capability to curb insurgents and defend the country on their own while others fear a residual American force could sanction continued violence by militias. </p> <p>Quite a few worry neighboring countries will swoop in and exploit the vacuum left by the U.S. whereas a considerable number think the U.S. will manipulate the fragile government behind scenes even if they draw down their troops. </p> <h3>"DON’T EVER THINK U.S. WILL LEAVE EASILY" </h3> </p></div> <p> <span id="more-13618"></span> <div style="text-align: left; unicode-bidi: bidi-override; direction: ltr"> <p>On a dingy, garbage-strewn street in al-Sadr city of Baghdad, 45-year-old taxi driver Sa’adi Ghani responded crisply when asked about the U.S. withdrawal, "Yes, they should leave." </p> <p>"It was very hard for me during the past years to see their vehicles moving on our streets and their helicopters all the time flying over our neighborhood. I’m fed up," he said. </p> <p>Alwan Kadhum, a vendor at the same street, echoed Ghani’s words, saying "of course we want to boot the Americans out. There is no country on the planet that accepts occupation in any form." </p> <p>It is not only Ghani and Kadhum who felt humiliated by a foreign invasion. A few Iraqis who rejected to be named told Xinhua that many Iraqis privately missed Saddam era because "at least we got dignity back then and nobody looked down upon us." </p> <p>In a culture that puts immense weight on dignity, few Iraqis feel unhurt living in an occupied country. However, it is the inability to expel the occupiers that make them hurt more. </p> <p>"From the beginning of the occupation I always say, the Americans did not invade Iraq to simply leave. Therefore, I believe the Americans will stay in the country in one way or another," Amer Habib, a Sunni Arab shop owner asserted. </p> <p>Ihsan Burhan, a Shiite peasant, shared the same view, "Don’t ever think that the U.S. will leave easily after this invasion. Even if they leave, they will plant their own seeds in our soil." </p> <h3>"U.S. PRESENCE CAUSES UNREST" </h3> <p>The U.S. military officers often cited Iraqi army’s inadequacies in air power, intelligence coordination and logistics as reasons why the U.S. troops should stay and help. Iraqi leaders, while acknowledging those deficiencies, insisted that they had the capability to maintain domestic security and tackle insurgents and terrorists. </p> <p>Violence in Iraq has plummeted since its peak in 2006 and 2007 when sectarian fighting almost plunged the country into civil war, but bombings and shootings remain daily occurrences. Extremists like al-Qaida has been weakened significantly but they are still able to carry out large-scale lethal attacks. </p> <p>Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for at least half a dozen attacks on police headquarters and government buildings in recent months, showcasing their potency and their foe’s loopholes. </p> <p>Iraqi security forces’ capability may be open to question, but a helping U.S. hand may complicate the situation and make things even worse because the Americans themselves are a major cause for unrest, some Iraqis deem. </p> <p>Burhan, the 63-year-old Shiite, told Xinhua that "as long as the U.S. troops remain in Iraq, troubles won’t be solved till the judgement day because their presence will continue to be an excuse for insurgents and militias to create chaos." </p> <p>June saw 14 U.S. soldiers killed as anti-U.S. militias reportedly escalated attacks on U.S. army bases and patrols. The toll is the deadliest month for U.S. troops in Iraq in three years. </p> <p>Maher Abbas, a high school teacher from Iraq’s Turkoman minority, considered U.S. troops as a principal cause for unrest in Iraq. </p> <p>"When they (the U.S. troops) were here in great numbers they fought militias and at the same time they trained other militias. They encouraged their allies’ parties to form their own death squads to carry out proxy war against those who fought their occupation." </p> <h3>"AMERICANS NOT TO BE COUNTED ON" </h3> <p>The disputed territories between Baghdad and the autonomous region of Kurdistan is said to be a flashpoint if the peace- keeping U.S. pulls out. Some fear that the clash between Arab security forces and the Kurdish Peshmerga (fighters) could lead to civil war without the U.S. mediation. </p> <p>Among the unresolved territories the oil-rich, multiethnic Kirkuk and its environs stand at the center of the contest. The central government in Baghdad does not want to slacken its grip on the city while the Kurds insist the land belongs to them. </p> <p>A combined force of Arab, Kurd and U.S. troops now patrols the city. Occasional exchange of gunfire between the Arab and Kurd forces were reported and later dismissed by officials from both sides as "accidents." </p> <p>Kurds in general think it’s necessary to keep the U.S. troops in the disputed city as a reassuring and stabilizing force, but to Ali Ibrahim, the 37-year-old Kurd, the Americans are not to be counted on. </p> <p>"Perhaps we will have some chaos if they (Americans) do completely withdraw, but we have to face it, we have to solve our own problems by ourselves. If we as Iraqis do not have the will to settle these internal issues, there is no point in asking foreigners to solve them for us." </p> <h3>"WARY OF MEDDLING NEIGHBORS" </h3> <p>Due to its geopolitical and religious role, Iraq has always been a battlefield for neighboring countries to vie for influence. With the strongman Saddam ousted and a fledgling new government hardly on its feet, its neighbors are eyeing for their own interest in the war-shattered country. </p> <p>Yousif Abid, a Sunni merchant from Anbar province, worried about Iran’s meddling. "If the U.S. troops leave now without finding a solution to Iraq’s problems, the security will get worse. Our neighbors, particularly Iran, will make their own calculations to replace the U.S. after its withdrawal," he said. </p> <p>Abid’s worries are shared by many Sunnis as the Shiite- dominated Iraqi government warms up its relationship with Shiite Iran. </p> <p>Some observers say besides Iran, Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait all have a role to play in Iraq’s affairs, and a continued U.S. military presence will be met with resistances from relevant countries. </p> <p>Iraq’s Shiite-hardliner, anti-U.S. cleric Muqtadar Sadr threatened to reactivate his "Mehdi Army" if U.S. continues to deploy its troops in Iraq beyond year-end deadline. Sadr has been studying religion in Iran for quite some years and is believed to have close ties with Iran. </p> <p>The U.S. press alleged Iran was behind a recent spike of attacks on U.S. facilities in Iraq. The United States has long been accusing Iran of supplying funds and arms to some Shiite militias in Iraq to launch attacks against U.S. troops, which was denied by Iran.</p> <p><a
