This name was given to Christ as instructed by the angel to Joseph (Matthew 1:21). The significance of the name is profound, as it encapsulates His mission to save humanity from sin. In biblical times, names were often reflective of one's character or mission, and Jesus' name is no exception. The power and authority vested in His name are emphasized throughout the New Testament (Acts 4:12, Philippians 2:9).
every knee should bow
This phrase signifies universal submission and acknowledgment of Jesus' lordship. The imagery of bowing the knee is a common biblical expression of worship, reverence, and submission (Isaiah 45:23). In ancient cultures, bowing was a physical act of showing respect and allegiance to a sovereign. This prophecy points to a future time when all creation will recognize Jesus' authority, echoing the eschatological vision found in Revelation 5:13.
in heaven and on earth and under the earth
This triadic expression encompasses all realms of existence. "In heaven" refers to the angelic beings and the heavenly hosts who worship God (Revelation 4:8-11). "On earth" includes all humanity, both believers and non-believers, who will ultimately acknowledge Christ's sovereignty (Romans 14:11). "Under the earth" is often interpreted as referring to the realm of the dead or demonic forces, indicating that even those who are opposed to God will recognize His authority. This comprehensive scope underscores the totality of Christ's dominion over all creation, aligning with the biblical theme of God's ultimate victory over evil (Colossians 1:16-20).
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
Central figure in Christianity, whose name is exalted above all.

2. Heaven
The spiritual realm where God, angels, and the redeemed reside.

3. Earth
The physical world inhabited by humanity.

4. Under the Earth
Often interpreted as the realm of the dead or spiritual forces opposed to God.

5. Apostle Paul
The author of the letter to the Philippians, writing to encourage and instruct the church in Philippi.
Teaching Points
The Supremacy of Christ
Jesus' name is above all names, signifying His ultimate authority and divinity.

Universal Acknowledgment
Every being, whether in heaven, on earth, or under the earth, will recognize Jesus' lordship, highlighting the comprehensive scope of His reign.

Call to Worship
Believers are encouraged to willingly bow in worship and submission to Jesus now, reflecting the future reality.

Humility and Obedience
Just as Jesus humbled Himself (Philippians 2:8), we are called to live in humility and obedience, acknowledging His lordship in our lives.

Eternal Perspective
Understanding that all will ultimately bow to Jesus should influence our daily decisions and priorities, focusing on eternal values.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Philippians 2

How can the historical record confirm or deny the claim of every knee bowing to Jesus (Philippians 2:10)?

Is Jesus the supreme name above all others?

Is "Jesus" derived from "Hail Zeus"?

Will every knee eventually bow?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(10) At (properly, in) the name of Jesus every knee should bow.--This is an instance of the significant practice, by which passages of the Old Testament speaking of God are, as a matter of course, applied in the New to our Lord Jesus Christ. "In the Name" is the phrase constantly used for worship of God. "I will lift up my hands in Thy Name" (Psalm 63:4). It denotes worship to Christ, not through Him.
Of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.--For "things" we may better substitute beings, for the reference is properly to personal beings; although in some sense "All the works of the Lord bless the Lord, praise Him and magnify Him for ever." (Comp. here Revelation 5:13, "Every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth . . . heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb for ever and ever." See also Ephesians 1:20-21, and Notes there.)

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 10. - That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow; translate, in the name, not at (comp. Isaiah 45:23, quoted in Romans 14:10, 11). The words may mean, either that all prayer must be offered to God in the name of Jesus, through his mediation; or that all creation must offer prayer to him. Both alternatives are true, and perhaps both are covered by the words; but the second seems to be principally intended (comp. Psalm 63:4, "I will lift up my hands in thy Name." Comp. also (in the Greek) Psalm 43:9; 104:3; 1 Kings 8:44; also the common Septuagint phrase, Ἐπικαλεῖσθαι ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου). Observe, the words are, not "the name Jesus," but "the name of Jesus;" the name, that is, which God freely gave to him (Ver. 9), It is the name which is above every name, that is, the majesty, the glory of Jesus, which is to be the object of Christian worship. The end of the whole passage being the exaltation of Jesus, it seems more natural to understand this verse of worship paid to Jesus than of worship offered through him to God the Father. Observe also that the words (Isaiah 45:23) on which this passage is formed are the words of Jehovah: "Unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear." They could not be used without impiety of any but God. Of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. Perhaps the angels, the living, and the dead; or, more probably (comp. Revelation 5:13 and Ephesians 1:21, 22), all creation, animate and inanimate, is represented as uniting in the universal adoration.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
that
ἵνα (hina)
Conjunction
Strong's 2443: In order that, so that.
