Using the culture-centered approach, this article engages with issues of food insecurity, health, and poverty among the low-income community in Singapore. Through 30 in-depth interviews, the narratives of the food insecure are privileged in articulating their lived experiences of food insecurity and in co-constructing meanings of health informed by their sociocultural context, in a space that typically renders them invisible. Arguing that poverty is communicatively sustained through the erasure of subaltern voices from mainstream discourses and policy platforms, we ask the research question: What are the meanings of food insecurity in the everyday experiences of health among the poor in Singapore? The research paper entitled ‘The portrayal of Social Evils in Kamala Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve and A Handful of Rice.’ In this paper, the effort is made to study Kamala Markandaya’s Social Evils in Nectar in a Sieve and A Handful of Rice. We will find poverty, hunger, starvation, beggary, prostitution, crime, unemployment and many more social evils in both novels. Kamala Markandaya’s A Handful of Rice and Nectar in a Sieve nothing but an account of the suffering of the rural and urban people, and how the cruelty of social evil resulting in suffering, death and misfortune is more explicit in both novels. Poverty is the everyday reality of the characters in the both novels. Poverty is not an abstract concept that one can really think about, it’s like wolf at the door that must constantly be staved off. Our capacity to relate symbolically with life has perished. Symbolic poverty denotes a deficiency of spiritual relatedness. As a compensatory measure, many strange preconceptions have taken hold of people’s minds. This is partly due to indoctrination. Most conspicuous is the inability to accept suffering and the reluctance to endure it. Western man, especially through the loss of ritual conceptions, is losing his capacity to relate symbolically to the dark side of existence. A new attitude toward evil and the destructive forces is called for. The article hopes to challenge the reader’s preconceptions, many of which have been drunk in with the mother’s milk.
