The Hebrew root for "counted" is "סָפַר" (safar), which implies a careful and deliberate enumeration. In the historical context, Jerusalem was under threat, likely from the Assyrian army. The leaders were taking stock of what was available to them, reflecting a human tendency to rely on material resources in times of crisis. Spiritually, this can be seen as a call to examine our own lives and resources, not just physically but spiritually, to ensure we are prepared for the challenges we face.<p><b>and tore them down</b><br />The act of tearing down houses signifies a desperate measure to fortify the city. The Hebrew word "נָתַץ" (natats) means to break down or destroy. This reflects the severity of the situation, where even homes, places of safety and comfort, were sacrificed for the greater good of the community's defense. Historically, this shows the dire circumstances Jerusalem faced, emphasizing the lengths to which people will go to protect what they hold dear. Spiritually, it can be seen as a metaphor for breaking down personal barriers or comforts that hinder our spiritual growth or community well-being.<p><b>to strengthen the wall</b><br />The purpose of demolishing the houses was to reinforce the city's defenses. The Hebrew word for "strengthen" is "חָזַק" (chazaq), meaning to make strong or firm. Walls in ancient cities were crucial for protection against invaders, symbolizing security and separation from chaos. In a spiritual sense, this can be interpreted as the need to fortify our faith and moral convictions, ensuring that our spiritual defenses are robust against the challenges and temptations of the world. Historically, this reflects the practical measures taken by the inhabitants of Jerusalem to ensure their survival, reminding us of the importance of preparation and resilience.<div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/isaiah/22.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(10) <span class= "bld">Ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem.</span>--The preparations for defence are continued. So in what was probably a contemporary psalm we have, "Walk about Zion <span class= "bld">. . .</span> tell the towers thereof <span class= "bld">. . .</span> mark ye well her bulwarks" (<a href="/psalms/48-12.htm" title="Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.">Psalm 48:12</a>). So in the later siege of Jerusalem houses were thrown down by (or, more accurately, <span class= "ital">on account of</span>) the mounds that were employed by the besiegers (<a href="/jeremiah/33-4.htm" title="For thus said the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;">Jeremiah 33:4</a>).<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/isaiah/22.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 10.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Ye have numbered... have broken down</span>; rather, <span class="accented">ye numbered</span>... <span class="accented">ye broke down</span>. The "numbering" was probably in order to see how many could be spared for pulling down. The repair of the walls with materials thus furnished was a sign of extreme haste and urgency. It would seem from vers. 7, 8 that the repairs were not begun until the town was invested. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/isaiah/22-10.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">You counted</span><br /><span class="heb">סְפַרְתֶּ֑ם</span> <span class="translit">(sə·p̄ar·tem)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5608.htm">Strong's 5608: </a> </span><span class="str2">To count, recount, relate</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the houses</span><br /><span class="heb">בָּתֵּ֥י</span> <span class="translit">(bāt·tê)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine plural construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1004.htm">Strong's 1004: </a> </span><span class="str2">A house</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of Jerusalem</span><br /><span class="heb">יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם</span> <span class="translit">(yə·rū·šā·lim)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3389.htm">Strong's 3389: </a> </span><span class="str2">Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all Israel</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and tore them down</span><br /><span class="heb">וַתִּתְֿצוּ֙</span> <span class="translit">(wat·tiṯṣəw)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - second person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5422.htm">Strong's 5422: </a> </span><span class="str2">To pull down, break down</span><br /><br /><span class="word">to strengthen</span><br /><span class="heb">לְבַצֵּ֖ר</span> <span class="translit">(lə·ḇaṣ·ṣêr)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1219.htm">Strong's 1219: </a> </span><span class="str2">To cut off, make inaccessible, enclose</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the wall.</span><br /><span class="heb">הַחוֹמָֽה׃</span> <span class="translit">(ha·ḥō·w·māh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2346.htm">Strong's 2346: </a> </span><span class="str2">A wall of protection</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/isaiah/22-10.htm">Isaiah 22:10 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/isaiah/22-10.htm">OT Prophets: Isaiah 22:10 You numbered the houses of Jerusalem (Isa Isi Is)</a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/isaiah/22-9.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Isaiah 22:9"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Isaiah 22:9" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/isaiah/22-11.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Isaiah 22:11"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Isaiah 22:11" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
