The name Shemaiah means "heard by Yahweh" or "Yahweh has heard," reflecting a common theme of divine communication and response.

1. Shemaiah the Prophet: One of the most notable figures named Shemaiah is the prophet during the reign of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon and king of Judah. Shemaiah is mentioned in 1 Kings 12:22-24 and 2 Chronicles 11:2-4. When Rehoboam intended to wage war against the northern tribes of Israel to reunite the kingdom after its division, Shemaiah received a word from the Lord instructing Rehoboam and the people of Judah not to fight against their fellow Israelites. The Berean Standard Bible records this divine message: "But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: 'Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, ‘This is what the LORD says: You are not to march up and fight against your brothers. Each of you must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they listened to the words of the LORD and turned back from going against Jeroboam" (2 Chronicles 11:2-4). Shemaiah's obedience to God's command helped prevent a civil war and demonstrated the importance of seeking and heeding divine guidance.

2. Shemaiah the Scribe: Another Shemaiah is mentioned in the context of King Josiah's reforms. In 2 Chronicles 34:20, Shemaiah is identified as one of the scribes who served in the court of King Josiah. This Shemaiah played a role in the religious reforms that Josiah implemented, which included the restoration of the temple and the rediscovery of the Book of the Law. His involvement underscores the importance of scribes in preserving and transmitting the sacred texts and laws of Israel.

3. Shemaiah the False Prophet: In the book of Jeremiah, a Shemaiah is mentioned as a false prophet who opposed Jeremiah's message. In Jeremiah 29:24-32, Shemaiah the Nehelamite sent letters to the people in Babylon, contradicting Jeremiah's prophecy of a long exile and encouraging rebellion against Babylonian rule. The Lord condemned Shemaiah's actions through Jeremiah, declaring that Shemaiah would have no descendants to dwell among the people and that he would not see the good that God would do for His people. This incident highlights the dangers of false prophecy and the importance of discerning true messages from God.

4. Shemaiah the Levite: In 1 Chronicles 15:8, Shemaiah is listed as one of the Levites whom King David appointed to help bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. This Shemaiah was part of the group responsible for the sacred task of transporting the Ark, emphasizing the role of the Levites in the worship and religious life of Israel.

5. Shemaiah the Descendant of David: In 1 Chronicles 3:22, Shemaiah is mentioned as a descendant of David, specifically as a son of Shecaniah. This genealogical reference places Shemaiah within the royal lineage, highlighting the continuation of David's line and the fulfillment of God's promises to David.

Throughout the Old Testament, the various individuals named Shemaiah illustrate different aspects of Israel's religious and political life, from prophetic ministry and temple service to the challenges of false prophecy and the significance of lineage. Each Shemaiah, in his own context, reflects the broader themes of obedience, divine communication, and the unfolding of God's purposes in the history of His people.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Shemaiah
that hears or obeys the Lord
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Shemaiah
(heard by Jehovah).

A prophet in the reign of Rehoboam. A prophet who, together with Ahijah, protested against Rehoboam's contemplated war against the ten revolted tribes (1 Kings 12:22-24 = 2 Chronicles 11:2-4). He declared that the rebellion had divine sanction. The second Greek account knows nothing of Ahijah in this connection and introduces Shemaiah at the gathering at Shechem where both Jeroboam and Rehoboam were present; it narrates that on this occasion Shemaiah (not Ahijah) rent his garment and gave ten parts to Jeroboam to signify the ten tribes over which he was to become king. (This version, however, is not taken very seriously, because of its numerous inconsistencies.) Shemaiah also prophesied at the invasion of Judah by Shishak (2 Chronicles 12:5-7). His message was to the effect that as the princes of Israel had humbled themselves, God's wrath against their idolatrous practices would not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak (2 Chronicles 13:7).
