Now<MH6258>, LORD<MH3068>, take<MH3947> my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>life<MH5315>, for I am no<MH3808> better<MH2896a> than<MH4480> my fathers<MH1>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then he lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> and fell<MH3462> asleep<MH3462> under<MH8478> a broom<MH7574> tree<MH7574>; but behold<MH2009>, there<MH2088> was an angel<MH4397> touching<MH5060> him, and he said<MH559> to him, “Arise<MH6965>, eat<MH398>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And he looked<MH5027>, and behold<MH2009>, there was at<MH4763> his head<MH4763> a round<MH5692> loaf<MH5692> of<MH5692> bread<MH5692> <i>baked on</i> hot<MH7531a> coals<MH7531a>, and a pitcher<MH6835> of water<MH4325>. So he ate<MH398> and drank<MH8354>, and lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> again<MH7725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH7725> back<MH7725> a second<MH8145> time<MH8145> and touched<MH5060> him, and said<MH559>, “Arise<MH6965>, eat<MH398>; because<MH3588> the journey<MH1870> is too<MH4480> long<MH7227a> for you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So he arose<MH6965> and ate<MH398> and drank<MH8354>, and he journeyed<MH1980> in the strength<MH3581b> of that food<MH396> for forty<MH705> days<MH3117> and forty<MH705> nights<MH3915> to Horeb<MH2722>, the mountain<MH2022> of God<MH430>. <p class="hdg">Elijah at Horeb</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then he came<MH935> there<MH8033> to a cave<MH4631> and spent<MH3885a> the<MH3885a> night<MH3885a> there<MH8033>; and behold<MH2009>, the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> <i>came</i> to him, and He said<MH559> to him, “What<MH4100> are you doing here<MH6311>, Elijah<MH452>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “I have been<MH7065> very<MH7065> zealous<MH7065> for the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of armies<MH6635>; for the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> have abandoned<MH5800a> Your covenant<MH1285>, torn<MH2040> down<MH2040> Your altars<MH4196>, and killed<MH2026> Your prophets<MH5030> with the sword<MH2719>. And I alone<MH905> am left<MH3498>; and they have sought<MH1245> to take<MH3947> my life<MH5315>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So He said<MH559>, “Go<MH3318> out<MH3318> and stand<MH5975> on the mountain<MH2022> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>.” And behold<MH2009>, the LORD<MH3068> was passing<MH5674a> by<MH5674a>! And a great<MH1419> and powerful<MH2389> wind<MH7307> was tearing<MH6561> out<MH6561> the mountains<MH2022> and breaking<MH7665> the rocks<MH5553> in<MH7665> pieces<MH7665> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>; <i>but</i> the LORD<MH3068> <i>was</i> not in the wind<MH7307>. And after<MH310> the wind<MH7307> <i>there was</i> an earthquake<MH7494>, <i>but</i> the LORD<MH3068> <i>was</i> not in the earthquake<MH7494>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And after<MH310> the earthquake<MH7494>, a fire<MH784>, <i>but</i> the LORD<MH3068> <i>was</i> not in the fire<MH784>; and after<MH310> the fire<MH784>, a sound<MH6963> of a gentle<MH1851> blowing<MH1827>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>When Elijah<MH452> heard<MH8085> <i>it,</i> he wrapped<MH3874> his face<MH6440> in his cloak<MH155> and went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and stood<MH5975> in the entrance<MH6607> of the cave<MH4631>. And behold<MH2009>, a voice<MH6963> <i>came</i> to him and said<MH559>, “What<MH4100> are you doing here<MH6311>, Elijah<MH452>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, “I have been<MH7065> very<MH7065> zealous<MH7065> for the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of armies<MH6635>; for the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> have abandoned<MH5800a> Your covenant<MH1285>, torn<MH2040> down<MH2040> Your altars<MH4196>, and killed<MH2026> Your prophets<MH5030> with the sword<MH2719>. And I alone<MH905> am left<MH3498>; and they have sought<MH1245> to take<MH3947> my life<MH5315>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to him, “Go<MH1980>, return<MH7725> on your way<MH1870> to the wilderness<MH4057b> of Damascus<MH1834>; and when you have arrived<MH935>, you shall anoint<MH4886> Hazael<MH2371> king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Aram<MH758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>You shall also anoint<MH4886> Jehu<MH3058> the son<MH1121> of Nimshi<MH5250> king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>; and you shall anoint<MH4886> Elisha<MH477> the son<MH1121> of Shaphat<MH8202> of Abel-meholah<MH65> as prophet<MH5030> in<MH8478> your place<MH8478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And it shall come<MH1961> about<MH1961> that the one who escapes<MH4422> from the sword<MH2719> of Hazael<MH2371>, Jehu<MH3058> shall put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>, and the one who escapes<MH4422> from the sword<MH2719> of Jehu<MH3058>, Elisha<MH477> shall put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Yet I will leave<MH7604> seven<MH7651> thousand<MH505> in Israel<MH3478>, all<MH3605> the knees<MH1290> that have not bowed<MH3766> to Baal<MH1168a> and every<MH3605> mouth<MH6310> that has not kissed<MH5401a> him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So he departed<MH1980> from there<MH8033> and found<MH4672> Elisha<MH477> the son<MH1121> of Shaphat<MH8202> while he was plowing<MH2790a>, with twelve<MH8147, 6240> yoke<MH6776> <i>of oxen</i> in front<MH6440> of him, and he with the twelfth<MH8147, 6240>. And Elijah<MH452> came<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> to him and threw<MH7993> his cloak<MH155> on him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then he left<MH5800a> the oxen<MH1241> behind<MH5800a> and ran<MH7323> after<MH310> Elijah<MH452>, and said<MH559>, “Please<MH4994> let me kiss<MH5401a> my father<MH1> and my mother<MH517>, then I will follow<MH1980, 310> you.” And he said<MH559> to him, “Go<MH1980> back<MH7725>, for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>what<MH4100> have I done<MH6213a> to you?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/19-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So he returned<MH7725> from following<MH310> him, and took<MH3947> the pair<MH6776> of oxen<MH1241> and sacrificed<MH2076> them, and cooked<MH1310> their meat<MH1320> with the implements<MH3627> of the oxen<MH1241>, and gave<MH5414> <i>it</i> to the people<MH5971a> and they ate<MH398>.
