Some scholars suggest it may mean "splendid" or "mouth," though these interpretations are speculative.

Biblical References:
Puvah is mentioned in the genealogical records of the Bible, specifically in the context of the tribes of Israel. He is identified as one of the sons of Issachar, who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob, also known as Israel. The primary reference to Puvah is found in the Book of Genesis:

· Genesis 46:13 : "The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron."

Puvah is also mentioned in the genealogical listings in the Book of Numbers, which provides a census of the tribes of Israel as they prepared to enter the Promised Land:

· Numbers 26:23 : "These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Puite clan from Puvah."

Tribal Significance:
Puvah is recognized as the progenitor of the Puite clan within the tribe of Issachar. The tribe of Issachar was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, each descending from one of Jacob's sons. The tribe of Issachar played a significant role in the history of Israel, known for its wisdom and understanding of the times, as noted in 1 Chronicles 12:32.

Historical and Cultural Context:
The genealogical records in which Puvah is mentioned serve to establish the lineage and tribal affiliations of the Israelites. These records were crucial for maintaining the identity and heritage of the people of Israel, especially during periods of conquest and settlement in the land of Canaan. The tribe of Issachar, to which Puvah belonged, was allocated a portion of land in the central region of Canaan, as described in the Book of Joshua.

Theological Implications:
From a theological perspective, the mention of Puvah and other genealogical figures underscores the importance of family lineage and tribal identity in the biblical narrative. These records highlight God's covenantal relationship with the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the fulfillment of His promises to make them a great nation. The genealogies also serve to trace the ancestry of significant biblical figures, ultimately leading to the lineage of Jesus Christ, as outlined in the New Testament.

Conclusion:
While Puvah himself is not a prominent figure in biblical narratives, his inclusion in the genealogical records reflects the broader themes of covenant, identity, and divine promise that are central to the biblical account.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
PUAH; PUVAH
pu'-a, pu'-va: (1) pu'ah: One of the Hebrew midwives whom the king of Egypt commanded to kill all male children of the Hebrews at birth.
