Dennis Stauffer, who chaired this year’s event, said he and the army of Lions who helped make the day a success were well pleased with this year’s level of community support.</p> <p>“It has grown over the years,” Stauffer said. “The car show especially grew this year.”</p> <p>The Ephrata Baseball Association also helped boost attendance with Little League games on two of the park’s ball diamonds.</p> <p>Stauffer said it’s hard to come up with an attendance figure because the park is so spread out, but he said all the food vendors were pleased with their sales.</p> <p>Joe’s Wings and Weiners was there, as was Papa John’s Pizza. Mt. Zion Church members sold ice cream. Akron Boy Scout Troop 57 sold burgers and toasted cheese burgers in the Boy Scout pavilion, where a cluster of bingo players took three hours to exhaust a pile of donated prizes.</p> <p>Except for the food, everything, including bingo, was free, Stauffer noted. The car show, with right around 100 entries, charged a $5 entry fee for each car.</p> <p>Lion Jeff Sherk is one of about 20 members of Ephrata’s iconic Axle Snappers Car Club. Sherk led the car show effort, which raised some $500 for the Lions. Sherk also made the awards for seven different classes in the show. Dick Gerwer, Lititz, took best-of-show honors with his ‘32 Ford three-window coupe.</p> <p>The Axle Snappers picked two of the seven winners, one of whom went home with an actual snapped axle, which Sherk mounted on a milled piece of Corian. For last year’s award, Sherk said he had to actually break an axle. This year, one of his fellow club members was kind enough to snap an axle in a — sanctioned — drag race.</p> <p>In addition to the best-of-show and snapped axle award, there were five other trophies presented.There was another Axle Snapper prize, a mayor’s choice, a Lions Club honoree, a most unique car and a people’s choice award.</p> <p>Akron Mayor John McBeth presented his award to a longish 1959 Ford owned by Keith Lehman Insurance, Ephrata. He liked its uniqueness. He also voiced appreciation for the work the Lions Club and the Axle Snappers had put into the Day in the Park event.</p> <p>Akron Day in the Park is held the second Saturday in June, and will be held
