href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/live/panel-all-points-easts-inaugural-london-weekend">2018 inaugural All Points East</a> was headlined by Brooklynite indie-dance/electro-rock noughties stalwarts <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/lcd-soundsystem">LCD Soundsystem</a>. They’d just released their 2017 reunion album <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/lcd-soundsystem-american-dream">American Dream</a> the year before, having gone on hiatus for nearly five years and then thought the better of it. Since then James Murphy’s troupe have been dividing their time between residencies in cities – six nights at the Brixton Academy in London, more in New York – and festivals, this year including Glastonbury, and tonight’s return at the start of the August Bank Holiday to Victoria Park for All Points East 2024’s second weekend. They head a varied bill that had already seen the UK festival debut of the formerly mysterious <strong>Jai Paul</strong> just a year on from his London live debut, the welcome return of <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/pixies"><strong>Pixies</strong></a> with a tour through their impressive back catalogue, and <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/floating-points"><strong>Floating Points</strong></a> turning day into night by means of on-point electronica in a big tent. </p> <p>Despite the lack of much subsequent new LCD Soundsystem material, this return visit is not quite a case of history repeating, and not everything proves to be the same as before, for time has a habit of passing. Their friend Justin Chearno, a partner with Murphy in New York restaurant The Four Horsemen, died two days before this show, and the grief and melancholy that has always run through Murphy’s at times oblique inner-monologue lyrics was especially raw here. Ahead of Someone Great, Murphy told the crowd: ‘‘We’re all fucking destroyed. We’re trying our best. We love him and miss him. This sucks. Us v Them is an absolute belter of an opening track, Dance Yrself Clean has one of the most spectacular drops of any song made in this century, Tonite’s thundering synth bass payoff and <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/john-carpenter"><strong>John Carpenter</strong></a>-esque stabs made the case for reassessing American Dream in context of their broader canon of work, and Tribulations built and built into an absolute colossus. It is a set made up of banger after banger, even if there’s somehow not space enough for Yeah, On Repeat, or Movement. LCD Soundsystem: a band with bangers to spare.</p> <p>In amongst the irresistible beats there’s a consistent nod to time passing and us all getting older, and there being nothing anyone can do about it, from Losing My Edge to Tonite, and much of this audience have aged with these songs and their makers. Somehow they take on more meaning with experiences of life and death in our own lives, and each time we come back to them they reveal previously unnoticed moments of empathy, and of understanding. The in-jokes, the comic observations of scenes which have come and gone, the ridiculousness of it all, the humanity, is all there, yet it shape-shifts across the years, even while Murphy, his dishevelled bed hair never knowingly combed or styled, stands as the unchanging everyman touchstone.</p> <p>Above it all, as ever, a giant mirrorball spins, throwing flecks of light over both band and audience, while Murphy, synth player Nancy Whang, guitarist Al Doyle, drummer Pat Mahoney and their cohorts arranged themselves as if in a studio rather than a festival headline stage, surrounded by all manner of analogue devices, wires and buttons, Murphy singing into his retro square microphone as if commenting on a race. Playing alongside each other and with other outfits – from <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/the-juan-maclean"><strong>The Juan Maclean</strong></a> via <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/hot-chip"><strong>Hot Chip</strong></a> to <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/despacio"><strong>Despacio</strong></a> – they are all consummate musicians in their own right. But LCD Soundsystem has always added up to more than the sum of the considerable parts. As All My Friends burst hearts across the park and they made like a sales force into the night (just as they did in 2018, sans encore), the case is made for this to be less a gig as much as a happening, a life-affirming joy, a celebration of the here and now in the knowledge that, immediately, it has been and gone.
