El ADN de un fabricante de deportivos conlleva batir récords, no importa cuáles». El volcán Ojos del Salado en la frontera chileno-argentina era uno de los pocos lugares del planeta que permitía abordar ese récord de altitud. La suposición era que allí se podrían superar los 6000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, al menos teóricamente. El monte, remoto e inhóspito, tenía un aspecto intimidante lleno de peligros desconocidos y muy reales. «Tras algunos dimes y diretes, teníamos plena confianza en conseguirlo», explica Walliser. «Sin embargo, decidimos no contárselo a nadie. Es cierto que informé al responsable de desarrollo en el Consejo de Dirección, Michael Steiner, que estaba relativamente al corriente, pero aparte de eso solo se lo dijimos directamente a la gente que queríamos que participara». A principios de octubre de 2019, un equipo de miembros selectos de diversas áreas de la producción de Porsche llevó un 911 (992) a los talleres del centro de desarrollo de Weissach para probarlo. Allí, primero se desensambló. El presupuesto era limitado, así que se decidió desde el principio usar un chasis y una cadena cinemática estándar del 911 Carrera 4S (992). Se suponía que el seis cilindros biturbo de 3.0 litros (911 Carrera 4S: consumo combinado de combustible (WLTP) 11.1 – 10.2 l/100 km, emisiones combinadas de CO₂ (WLTP) 253 – 231 g/km, CO₂ class G )  sería capaz de cumplir a altitudes por encima de los 6000 metros. «La única forma de demostrarlo era probar las condiciones esperables en la cámara de aire de baja presión que Porsche construyó en los años 80 para desarrollar el motor de avión PFM 3200», explica Michael Rösler. Las primeras pruebas revelaron que solo se necesitaban retoques mínimos en el control del motor del 911 para disponer de potencia más que suficiente a alturas de hasta 7000 metros. </p> <p> </p> </div> </div> <div class="col-s-12 col-m-8 col-m-2-offset col-l-6 col-l-3-offset"> <h3 class="align-center-l">La primera subida</h3> <p>Justo a las nueve semanas de empezar los trabajos, el vehículo estrictamente secreto bautizado cariñosamente como «Doris» por su «off-road independent suspension» (suspensión independiente todoterreno) se sometió a una primera marcha de prueba. La primera prueba en una cantera abandonada a 150 kilómetros al este de Stuttgart resultó alentadora, ya que todos los sistemas funcionaron según lo previsto. Solo una semana después, a finales de diciembre de 2019, el equipo puso rumbo a Chile.</p> </div> </div> <div class="col-s-12 col-m-8 col-m-2-offset col-l-6 col-l-3-offset"> <p>La primera fue una expedición de prueba tanto para el equipo como para Doris. Se empezó con un lento proceso de aclimatación imprescindible para que los ingenieros y el conductor se adaptaran a la altitud extrema y a las gélidas temperaturas de hasta 20 grados bajo cero. La seguridad era la máxima prioridad y se hicieron revisiones médicas periódicas para tener bajo control los efectos de la falta de sueño y oxígeno y del frío implacable. Aparte de algunos problemas con la refrigeración fáciles de resolver, el 911 propulsado con eFuels superó perfectamente la primera subida al volcán. Pero esta vez con una nueva potencia y un nuevo socio: el piloto de fábrica francés de Porsche y ganador de Le Mans Romain Dumas con su equipo de carreras RD Limited.</p> </div><div class="col-s-12 col-m-4-offset col-m-4 col-l-4-offset col-l-4"> <blockquote> <p>«Me atrajo el reto de superar mis propios límites.»</p> <cite>Romain Dumas</cite> </blockquote> </div><div class="col-s-12 col-m-8 col-m-2-offset col-l-6 col-l-3-offset"> <h3 class="align-center-l">El estímulo de lo imposible</h3> <p>Dumas y Walliser son viejos amigos, y la pasión del piloto por el deporte extremo se reveló como un enriquecimiento para el segundo intento. «Me atrajo el reto humano de superar mis propios límites», afirma Dumas. «Pero también el desarrollo de un deportivo capaz de algo que sobre el papel parece imposible». Añade que lo más importante es la preparación, igual que en Le Mans. «Si construyes el vehículo idóneo y formas el equipo adecuado, tienes una oportunidad de ganar». En colaboración con los ingenieros de Weissach, RD Limited empezó a desarrollar un hermano mejorado para Doris. Bautizado como «Edith», se equipó con un cabrestante mucho más grande, lo que hizo necesario desplazar el sistema de refrigeración detrás del asiento del conductor. Edith era mucho más ligero y también llevaba amortiguadores a medida y ruedas que permitían una presión de neumáticos de 0,4 bares. Por otra parte, el sistema tenía la ventaja de absorber la mayoría de los impactos más duros, que de lo contrario habrían sido muy fatigosos para los conductores durante las largas y exigentes travesías.</p> <p>Dumas preparó a su equipo minuciosamente y reclutó a prestigiosos montañistas europeos, guías de montaña chilenos y dos experimentados médicos alpinos. A esto se unió un equipamiento de expedición optimizado para hacer más llevaderas las condiciones adversas del Ojos del Salado. A finales de 2023, el equipo voló de vuelta a Santiago y empezó de nuevo el fatigoso proceso de aclimatamiento y ascensión. El 2 de diciembre de 2023, el equipo dirigido por Romain Dumas se puso en marcha de nuevo a las 3:30 h de la mañana rumbo a la cumbre. Parecía que el tiempo mostraba en esa ocasión su faceta más amable, lo que allanaba el camino al intento de récord.</p> <p>Entonces, Dumas se vio ante la disyuntiva: girar... ¿o abortar misión? Y decidió dirigirse a la izquierda a lo largo de la cresta estrecha y helada confiando en la ligereza y la agilidad del 911 y a punto de cruzar un terreno que ningún otro vehículo había superado antes. Esquivó algunos bloques rocosos, pasó por encima de otros... y entonces atacó el empinado muro de 45 grados con firme determinación, porque sabía bien que dar la vuelta no era una opción. Con una última aceleración, el piloto y Edith llegaron envueltos en una nube de cenizas volcánicas a la cresta de la cumbre occidental del Ojos del Salado. El GPS registró 6734 metros sobre el nivel del mar. La decisión de girar a la izquierda ante la cumbre era un viaje sin billete de vuelta. «Pero el chasis, la potencia y la agilidad del 911 hicieron posible lo imposible».</p> <p>Sin olvidar el equipo
