vijfhonderdste geboortedag van Erasmus herdacht. De uitreiking van de Erasmusprijs in de Laurenskerk aan Gabriel Marcel en Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker, was een van de hoogtepunten van de herdenkingsplechtigheden.</p> <p>‘Als goedheid en wijsheid samengaan met een leven van studie en nadenken, kan de uitkomst heten: Gabriel Marcel.’ Zo typeerde de Regent in zijn laudatio de Franse filosoof Marcel. Centraal bij Marcel (1889-1973) staan het menselijk contact en de naastenliefde, die de weg bereiden tot God. De katholieke filosoof wordt dikwijls de grondlegger van het christenexistentialisme genoemd, maar zelf noemde hij zijn denkwijze ‘neosocratisme’ of liever: een concrete filosofie. Deze filosofie houdt zich bezig met het vragen naar zin en achtergrond van het menselijk bestaan vanuit het concrete leven. Essentieel voor Marcel is hierbij de verbondenheid met God en de medemens. Ook de strijd om de individuele subjectiviteit te beschermen tegen vernietiging door de materialistische en technologische maatschappij was voor hem een belangrijk thema.</p> <p>Zijn filosofische werken bestaan onder meer uit een twintigtal toneelstukken – theater en muziek zijn Marcels grote inspiratiebronnen geweest – en talloze wetenschappelijke publicaties, waarvan de bekendste zijn: <em>Journal métaphysique </em>(1927), <em>Être et avoir </em>(1935), <em>Le mystère de l’être</em> (1951), <em>Fragments philosophiques 1909-1914</em> (1962) en <em>La dignité humaine et ses assises existentielles</em> (1964).</p> <p>Gabriel Marcel heeft op zeer persoonlijke wijze ruim vijftig jaar een bijdrage geleverd aan de Europese wijsbegeerte en zo een onuitwisbaar stempel op het Europese geestesleven gedrukt. Met zijn analyses van hoop en trouw heeft hij geprobeerd een diagnose en een therapie voor de geestesnood van zijn tijd te geven.</p> <p><em>Gabriel Marcel heeft met de Erasmusprijs steun verleend aan de Fondation pour une entraide intellectuelle européenne te Parijs. Dit was een stichting die Oost-Europese schrijvers, kunstenaars en intellectuelen hielp met bijvoorbeeld beurzen, colloquia en contacten met westerse uitgevers.
