The first one I checked out the link carefully and it prompted me to download a &quot;Flash update&quot;. That message was quickly trashed and I thought nothing more of it. This appeared to be <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://tinyurl.com/5qgsvs">the same virus that surfaced in early August</a>. Moreover, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=25844207130">Facebook put in place</a> a &quot;vaccine&quot; that renders the links presumably harmless and it <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://tinyurl.com/5ntum9">appears to be working</a>. </p> <p>But this morning I received another suspicious message and I took a closer look (see the image above). The name of the sender looked familiar so I went to her profile and saw that we have 36 friends in common -- including a Facebook VP as well as my husband! Upon messaging her, I realized that we had met several times. And she confirmed that her account had been compromised, but we weren't able to go into details about how.</p> <p><a onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=790,height=549,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.charleneli.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/08/24/tamizhu.jpg"><img width="100" height="69" border="0" src="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214im_/http://www.charleneli.com/blog/images/2008/08/24/tamizhu.jpg" title="Tamizhu" alt="Tamizhu" style="margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px; float: left;"/></a> (Update: I got permission from my friend, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=508628684">Tami Zhu</a>, to mention her. I've also included a screenshot of her profile page to the left. Our hope is that her friends and network will be warned and that this will help reclaim her image and reputation.)</p> <p><del>This person</del> Tami is not a naive Facebook newbie, but a smart, sophisticated professional who has worked in the online space for a long time -- she's the VP of business development at AOL Truveo. Obviously, her account had been compromised, and it's unclear how. She put up warning notices on her Facebook profile and is pretty busy today trying to undo the damage. </p> <p>She's reached out to her Facebook VP friend, but I haven't had a chance to find out Facebook's response. I also sent a request for more information to Facebook's PR team and Facebook security chief Max Kelly, and I'll update when I find out more.</p> <p>But this raises a question -- with the multitude of Facebook apps, messages, and friend requests pouring in, how are we supposed to stay safe? If it can happen to this person -- a very smart, tech-savvy person -- it can happen to you and me. <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=25844207130">Facebook has some security suggestions</a>, but I don't think they go far enough. </p> <p>I'd like to hear from anyone who's had their Facebook, MySpace, etc. accounts compromised. How did it happen, what did you do about it, and how did the social networking site help you -- if at all? If you'd like to contribute anonymously, email me at charlene (at) charleneli (dot) com. </p> <p>After all, the more we know, the more we can keep each other safe. </p> <div id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:fb146977-55da-414e-aebf-01f8061a86c8" class="wlWriterSmartContent" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;">Technorati Tags: <a rel="tag" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tags/facebook">facebook</a>,<a rel="tag" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tags/virus">virus</a>,<a rel="tag" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tags/security">security</a>,<a rel="tag" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tags/privacy">privacy</a>,<a rel="tag" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tags/spam">spam</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="entry-footer"> <p class="entry-footer-info"> <span class="post-footers">Posted by Charlene Li at 10:31 AM in <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/security/">Security</a>, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/social_networks/">Social networks</a> </span> <span class="separator">|</span> <a class="permalink" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/facebook-virus.html">Permalink</a> <span class="separator">|</span> <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/facebook-virus.html#comments">Comments (0)</a> <span class="separator">|</span> <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/facebook-virus.html#trackback">TrackBack (0)</a> </p> <!-- technorati tags --> <!-- post footer links --> </div> </div> <h2 class="date-header">August 23, 2008</h2> <div class="entry" id="entry-54601712"> <h3 class="entry-header"><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/vote-for-my-sxs.html">Vote for my SXSW panels</a></h3> <div class="entry-content"> <div class="entry-body"> <p><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.charleneli.com/blog/WindowsLiveWriter/panel_picker_pickme.gif"><img style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin: 0px 5px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="129" alt="panel_picker_pickme" src="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214im_/http://www.charleneli.com/blog/WindowsLiveWriter/panel_picker_pickme_thumb.gif" width="129" align="left" border="0"></a> I need your help - I'm hoping to be invited to speak at the SXSW Interactive Festival next March in Austin and part of the process is asking the audience what they want to hear. And that is what makes Gnomedex so different from other conferences -- it's personal. I never met Chris before and he came right up to me and introduced himself at the first break.</p>&nbsp; <p>The sessions themselves have been variable, but for the most part, gratifying (I've included links to the individual video sessions). I showed up late but was able to catch <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://searchengineland.com/">Danny Sullivan's</a> &quot;<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.gnomedex.com/danny-sullivan-search-life-meets-real-life/">Search Life Meets Real Life</a>&quot; which sparked a healthy debate about privacy in the backchannel. Danny shared that he doesn't mention his kids' names in his posts (ditto for me) but then discovered that his friends will write publicly about doing something with Danny and his family, or post pictures online with the names of his kids in the description. In the end, I think there's very little that remains truly private unless you it happens behind closed doors with nobody around to witness it. Otherwise, consider everything fair game to be captured, documented, indexed. All the more reason for us to demand and develop that procedures be put in place so that we can <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.charleneli.com/blog/2008/08/in-google-i-tru.html">trust players like Google</a>.</p>&nbsp; <p><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://markbao.com/">Mark Bao</a>, a 16 year old entrepreneur who has sold three Facebook apps took the stage after lunch with <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.stealthmode.com/">Francine Hardaway</a> for &quot;<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/655040">Meet Generation Y</a>&quot;. Francine stole the show, starting off by taking off jackets and tops to reflect her changing work persona and setting the stage for how her Boomer generation didn't grow up with technologies like The Internet, cell phones, or even fax machines. I've seen many Gen Y&quot; sessions but this one took the cake because of Francine's interview style and questions, and because Mark Bao is so atypical of his generation, and yet so representative.</p>&nbsp; <p><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.bethkanter.org/">Beth Kanter</a> gave a rousing presentation &quot;<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/655225">How To Use Social Media For Social Causes</a>&quot; on how she leverages personal networks and social media to raise money for social causes. It struck me that non-profits can and should activate and energize their base of loyal supporters to bring the cause to their own networks. At the end her speech, she urged Gnomedexers to spread the word to <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/08/how-long-does-i.html">help send a Cambodian student to college</a>. No surprise: thousands of dollars were raised in just a few minutes. Call it the &quot;geek ATM&quot;, but personal fundraising doesn't work without that personal appeal. Just watch Beth's presentation, see how much of herself she puts into it. You can't help but be moved to act. </p>&nbsp; <p>On that note, what can companies and brands learn from social cause fundraising? Viral and word of mouth campaigns often rely on buzz and flash to spread. What if they could instead put more passion and personality into the &quot;call to action&quot;? Can a company excite the passion and conviction, that personal connection that Beth can? I don't think a company could -- but *people* at a company could. </p>&nbsp; <p><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://radar.oreilly.com/brady/">Brady Forrest</a> closed out the day with <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://igniteseattle.com/">Ignite Seattle</a>, where a person gets 5 minutes and 20 slides to say whatever they want. They are afraid that their biggest fears -- that the product positioning isn't right, that the market might be hostile, that competitors will get wind of their ideas -- will come to fruition. The more insecure they are, the less likely they are to be open. But that's the wrong approach -- the more unsure you are, the MORE important it is to reach out to your strongest advocates to get an early read on your strategy and positioning. And what to do if you don't have good relationships with potential advocates? You better start developing them now so that you'll have them in the future</li></ul> <ul><li><strong>Agencies are the heros -- and the villians -- of social media. </strong>Interactive and PR agencies have done a great job educating and bringing marketing to social media. In most cases, they tap a trusted relationship with the client to ease them into a potentially scary space. But because of a traditional business model -- especially for interactive agencies -- social media initiatives often appear as campaigns, rather than as a way to build a relationship with customers. The result is sometimes that I'm being &quot;used&quot; to tap into word of mouth network rather than the company really wanting to develop a relationship with me. Marketers be smart -- in the end, you are the guardian of the relationship with your customer so think long and hard about how you want your agency partners to build that relationship on your behalf. </li></ul> <ul><li><strong>Time spent blogging and finding my own &quot;voice&quot;. </strong>David expressed surprise -- almost alarm -- that I spend so little time on blogging. And I have to say that I'm rethinking my approach because of the interview. David's exhortation to &quot;be the voice&quot; means that my voice needs to be expressed, and frankly, more frequently. It's been a while since I've found my own voice, subsumed as it has been for the past year behind the writing and marketing of Groundswell. Now that I'm on my own, I need to find that personal voice again, and to do that, I need to write more frequently. So you'll be hearing from me -- be sure to let me know if I'm blogging <em>too</em> much!</li></ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> <div class="entry-footer"> <p class="entry-footer-info"> <span class="post-footers">Posted by Charlene Li at 07:33 AM in <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/podcasts/">Podcasts</a>, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/social/">Social</a> </span> <span class="separator">|</span> <a class="permalink" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/new-podcast-wit.html">Permalink</a> <span class="separator">|</span> <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/new-podcast-wit.html#comments">Comments (1)</a> <span class="separator">|</span> <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/new-podcast-wit.html#trackback">TrackBack (0)</a> </p> <!-- technorati tags --> <p class="entry-footer-tags"> <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.technorati.com/search/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/new-podcast-wit.html" title="Find related items at Technorati.">Technorati Tags</a>: <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tag/agencies" rel="tag">agencies</a>, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tag/blogging" rel="tag">blogging</a>, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://technorati.com/tag/social" rel="tag">social</a> </p> <!-- post footer links --> </div> </div> <h2 class="date-header">August 12, 2008</h2> <div class="entry" id="entry-54092372"> <h3 class="entry-header"><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/meet-up-in-nyc.html">Meet Up in NYC Wednesday Aug 13th</a></h3> <div class="entry-content"> <div class="entry-body"> <p>I'm heading out to NYC to pick up an award from AdAge, who named me one of 30 &quot;<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fadage.com%2Fwomentowatch08%2F&amp;ei=9sChSLnnBIqOsQOllMiGDw&amp;usg=AFQjCNFG0KrCFEpKXIM_0SLKk1p2EoCQrw&amp;sig2=FpaJSLJ1eBdL8ZkoENBiBQ">Women To Watch in 2008</a>&quot;. Add in tools like Google Docs where I practically <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blogs.forrester.com/groundswell/2007/02/how_i_use_googl.html">run my personal life</a> and Google Reader for my RSS feeds, and a substantial part of my time and life resides on Google. And that doesn't even include search. </p> <p>And it's getting better/worse, depending on how you look at it. Since becoming independent, I've shifted all of my work email and calendaring to go through Google, although I have taken steps such as synching to Outlook and owning my own domains to ensure that I have backup to the cloud. And with good reason -- Chris Brogan wrote about how his colleague <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.chrisbrogan.com/when-google-owns-you/">Nick Saber got locked out of his Google account</a>, and how it was <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.chrisbrogan.com/google-gets-back-to-nick/">eventually resolved</a>. </p> <p>This post is not about the merits and faults of cloud computing, but rather, how much trust I put into Google -- and any other online service that I use, like Yahoo!, Facebook, and TypePad. In the end, it's a leap of faith that I take each and every day. </p> <p>So in Google I trust - for the most part. Google has <em>earned</em> my trust over the years with good, reliable, innovative products. And maybe I'm just a naive, trusting person, but I believe that most companies like Google will try to do the right thing because they don't want another <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blogs.forrester.com/groundswell/2007/11/close-encounter.html">Facebook-like Beacon fiasco</a>.&#160; </p> <p>But Google can and should do more to continue to earn my trust. Phil Wainwright over at ZDNet pointed this out, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blogs.zdnet.com/SAAS/?p=575">laying out steps like providing a premium service</a> for serious account users. This applies even more to start-ups -- I think twice about giving my information to a company that may not be around tomorrow. </p> <p>Take a look at your own experience, and replace &quot;Google&quot; with whatever service that you're using and ask yourself, what makes me confident that Google et. al. will do the right thing by me? And I would love to know, just how much you trust your online service providers and what they can do better to keep that trust. </p> </div> </div> <div class="entry-footer"> <p class="entry-footer-info"> <span class="post-footers">Posted by Charlene Li at 08:57 AM in <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/portals/">Portals</a>, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/work/">Work</a> </span> <span class="separator">|</span> <a class="permalink" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/in-google-i-tru.html">Permalink</a> <span class="separator">|</span> <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/in-google-i-tru.html#comments">Comments (11)</a> <span class="separator">|</span> <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/in-google-i-tru.html#trackback">TrackBack (0)</a> </p> <!-- technorati tags --> <!-- post footer links --> </div> </div> <h2 class="date-header">August 04, 2008</h2> <div class="entry" id="entry-53748010"> <h3 class="entry-header"><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008/08/what-im-doing-n.html">What I'm doing next</a></h3> <div class="entry-content"> <div class="entry-body"> <p>First, a big thank you to everyone who sent well-wishes when I <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://blogs.forrester.com/groundswell/2008/07/why-im-leaving.html">announced that I was leaving Forrester</a>. Your heartfelt comments, tweets, emails, and calls were very much appreciated. Many people asked what I'm doing next, so here's a quick overview, on the first day of my new &quot;work&quot; life. </p> <p>I'm going to be working as an independent thought leader, looking at <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.charleneli.com/blog/interest-areas.html">how emerging technologies impact business, organizations, and individuals</a> and sharing my thoughts here on this blog as well as on <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.twitter.com/charleneli">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.friendfeed.com/charleneli">FriendFeed</a>, Facebook, et. al. I'll also be conducting interviews with companies about what's happening in this space. On the business side, I'm offering a few <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090301072214/http://www.charleneli.com/blog/services.html">commercial services</a>, ranging from speeches to consulting for a limited set of clients. </p> <p>As I mentioned in my departure post, a key reason I decided to leave Forrester was to seek greater control and balance in my life. To that end, I'm limiting how much I travel and the number of commercial engagements that I take on. This will leave me plenty of time to devote to blogging, tweeting, and most importantly, thinking about my passion, how emerging technologies are impacting our lives and businesses. </p> <p>But to wit, I can't do it alone. I'm counting on you to provide me with feedback, criticism, leads, tips, and ideas to move my thinking forward. So please stay in touch, subscribe to my blog feed, and let me know what I should be thinking about. </p> </div> </div> <div class="entry-footer"> <p class="entry-footer-info"> <span
