class="entry-title">Research</h1></header><!-- .entry-header --> <div class="entry-content"> <p>My research addresses&nbsp;questions at the intersection of ethics and science, in an effort <strong>to&nbsp;understand moral controversies and social change</strong>. </p> <p>If there鈥檚 an <a href="https://www.uab.edu/reporter/know-more/publications/item/10415-5-things-a-philosopher-learned-from-diving-deep-into-neuroscience" title="">overall theme</a> to my writing, it鈥檚 shades of gray. Debates in ethics are often too black and white, either/or. We should <strong>resist false dichotomies and embrace the gray areas</strong>. The problem of factory farming needn鈥檛 be addressed either through strict veganism or eating whatever we want. Neurological disorders and psychiatric categories鈥攍ike autism and substance use disorder鈥攁re useful but can lead us to miss how diverse people鈥檚 experiences are within the same category. Similarly, the division between reason and emotion fails to appreciate that human reasoning is more complex than the caricature of conscious, reliable deliberation. By heeding the nuance, we can get closer to the truth and hopefully find more common ground than tribalism.</p> <p>Two interlocking questions have guided much of my work:</p> <ol class="wp-block-list"> <li style="font-size:14px"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Moral psychology</span>: <strong>How trustworthy is our reasoning in ethics and science? </strong>Based on an adequate understanding of the sources of our attitudes and decisions (our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/wp-content/media/may-moral-psychology-rep.pdf">moral psychology</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://philpapers.org/archive/MAYTNO-5.pdf">neurobiology</a>),&nbsp;we can assess whether they are biased and mere rationalization. I&#8217;ve argued that our moral decisions are largely <a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/books/regard-for-reason/">responsive to reasons</a> but that <a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/wp-content/media/may-bias-in-science.pdf" title="">motivated reasoning</a> is pervasive in ethics and science. Although human agency is often automatic and unconscious, it is nonetheless <a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/books/neuroethics/">diverse and flexible</a>. (My views are thus largely <em>rationalist</em> and <em>non-skeptical</em>.)</li> <li style="font-size:14px"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Moral Progress</span>: <strong>How can we become more virtuous and better equipped to tackle great societal challenges of the 21st century?</strong> The challenges I focus on are artificial intelligence, <a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/books/neuroethics/">addiction</a>, <a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/wp-content/media/king-may-mental-illness.pdf">mental illness</a>, <a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/wp-content/media/may-moral-progress-for-better-apes.pdf" title="">political polarization</a>, <a href="https://www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/2022/02/17/vegetarian-vegan-factory-farming-climate-joshua-may-victor-kumar#_=_" title="">sustainability</a>, and&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/wp-content/media/may-kumar-defense-of-reducetarianism.pdf" title="">mistreatment of animals</a>. On my view, humans are deeply social animals who act for reasons. So, although social change requires appreciation of <a href="https://www.prindleinstitute.org/2023/01/why-bother-with-political-arguments/">moral arguments</a>, that takes time and only works when ideas can spread through networks of mutual trust and respect. Effective changes to individual behavior (and the systems in which they operate) should thus combat overconfidence, motivated reasoning, intolerance, and tribalism. (My views here are thus <em>optimistic</em> but <em>incrementalist</em>.)</li> </ol> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Books</h2> <p><a href="https://www.joshdmay.com/books/neuroethics/"><em>Neuroethics: Agency in the Age of Brain Science</em></a> (Oxford University Press, 2023)<br><sub>Named Top 10 Outstanding Academic Title of 2024 by <a href="https://www.choice360.org/choice-pick/outstanding-academic-titles-2024-top-10-oat-reviews-part-one/" title="">Choice Reviews</a><br>Reviewed in <a href="https://thebiologist.rsb.org.uk/biologist-book-reviews/neuroethics-agency-in-the-age-of-brain-science" title=""><em>The Biologist</em></a>, <a href="http://www.choicereviews.org/review/10.5860/CHOICE.233673" title=""><em>Choice</em></a>, <em><a href="https://www.asa3.org/ASA/PSCF/2024/PSCF9-24May.pdf" title="">Perspectives on SCF</a></em>, <em><a href="https://philosophymindscience.org/index.php/phimisci/announcement/view/50" title="">Philosophy &amp;
