The consolidation process has an important role in settlement analysis for the embankments and footings resting on clayey soils. The settlement amount is related to the compression and the swelling indexes of the soil. Because the predominant upper soil layer in Lebanon is consisting mainly of clay, this layer is a real challenge for structural and highway engineering. To determine the effect of load and drainage on the engineering consolidation characteristics of Lebanese soil, a full experimental and synthesis study was conducted on different soil samples collected from many locations. This study consists of two parts. During the first part which is an experimental one, the Proctor test and the consolidation test were performed on the collected soil samples. After it, the identifications soil tests as hydrometer, specific gravity and Atterberg limits are done. The consolidation test which is the main test in this research is done by loading the soil for some days then an unloading cycle was applied. It takes two weeks to complete a typical consolidation test. Because of these reasons, during the second part of our research which is based on the analysis of the experiments results, some correlations were found between the main consolidation parameters as compression and swelling indexes with the other soil parameters easy to calculate. The results show that the compression and swelling indexes of Lebanese clays may be roughly estimated using a model involving one or two variables in the form of the natural void ratio and the Atterberg limits. These correlations have increasing importance for site engineers, and the proposed model also seems to be applicable to a wide range of clays worldwide. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=atterberg%20limits" title="atterberg limits">atterberg limits</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clay" title=" clay"> clay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compression%20and%20swelling%20indexes" title=" compression and swelling indexes"> compression and swelling indexes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=settlement" title=" settlement"> settlement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20consolidation" title=" soil consolidation"> soil consolidation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108799/consolidation-behavior-of-lebanese-soil-and-its-correlation-with-the-soil-parameters" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108799.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1461</span> Compressed Suffix Arrays to Self-Indexes Based on Partitioned Elias-Fano</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guo%20Wenyu">Guo Wenyu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Qu%20Youli"> Qu Youli</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A practical and simple self-indexing data structure, Partitioned Elias-Fano (PEF) - Compressed Suffix Arrays (CSA), is built in linear time for the CSA based on PEF indexes. Moreover, the PEF-CSA is compared with two classical compressed indexing methods, Ferragina and Manzini implementation (FMI) and Sad-CSA on different type and size files in Pizza &amp; Chili. The PEF-CSA performs better on the existing data in terms of the compression ratio, count, and locates time except for the evenly distributed data such as proteins data. The observations of the experiments are that the distribution of the &phi; is more important than the alphabet size on the compression ratio. Unevenly distributed data &phi; makes better compression effect, and the larger the size of the hit counts, the longer the count and locate time. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compressed%20suffix%20array" title="compressed suffix array">compressed suffix array</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-indexing" title=" self-indexing"> self-indexing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=partitioned%20Elias-Fano" title=" partitioned Elias-Fano"> partitioned Elias-Fano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PEF-CSA" title=" PEF-CSA"> PEF-CSA</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65986/compressed-suffix-arrays-to-self-indexes-based-on-partitioned-elias-fano" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65986.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">252</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1460</span> Analytical and Statistical Study of the Parameters of Expansive Soil</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Medjnoun">A. This soil has the characteristic of changing state under the effect of water solicitation (wetting and drying). A set of geotechnical parameters is necessary for the characterization of this soil type, such as state parameters, physical and chemical parameters and mechanical parameters. Some of these tests are very long and some are very expensive, hence the use or methods of predictions. The complexity of this phenomenon and the difficulty of its characterization have prompted researchers to use several identification parameters in the prediction of swelling potential. This document is an analytical and statistical study of geotechnical parameters affecting the potential of swelling clays. This work is performing on a database obtained from investigations swelling Algerian soil. The obtained observations have helped us to understand the soil swelling structure and its behavior. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=analysis" title="analysis">analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=estimated%20model" title=" estimated model"> estimated model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parameter%20identification" title=" parameter identification"> parameter identification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling%20of%20clay" title=" swelling of clay"> swelling of clay</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37170/analytical-and-statistical-study-of-the-parameters-of-expansive-soil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37170.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">417</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1459</span> Effect of Swelling Pressure on Drug Release from Polyelectrolyte Micro-Hydrogel Particles</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mina%20Boroujerdi">Mina Boroujerdi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Javad%20Tavakoli"> Javad Tavakoli</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Hydrogels are extensively studied as matrices for the controlled release of drugs. In this study, thermo-elastic and self-healing polymer composite hydrogels were prepared from polyacrylamide (PAM) and 2D fillers using in-situ method. In addition, the PAM and fillers were prepared in presence of organic crosslinkers, i.e., hydroquinone (HQ) and hexamethylenediamine (HMT). The swelling behavior of the prepared hydrogels was studied by hydrating the dried hydrogels. The thermal and rheological properties of the prepared hydrogels were evaluated before and after swelling study using thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetric technique and dynamic mechanical analysis. From the results obtained, incorporating fillers into the PAM matrix enhanced the swelling degree of the hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical properties, attaining up to 77% self-healing efficiency compared to the neat-PAM (i.e., 29%). This, in turn, indicates addition of 2D fillers improved self-healing properties of the polymer hydrogel, thus, making the prepared hydrogels applicable for water shutoff treatments under high temperature. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polymer%20hydrogels" title="polymer hydrogels">polymer hydrogels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=2D%20fillers" title=" 2D fillers"> 2D fillers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=elastic%20self-healing%20hydrogels" title=" elastic self-healing hydrogels"> elastic self-healing hydrogels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=water%20shutoff" title=" water shutoff"> water shutoff</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling%20properties" title=" swelling properties"> swelling properties</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110794/thermo-elastic-and-self-healing-polyacrylamide-2d-polymer-composite-hydrogels-for-water-shutoff-treatment" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110794.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">145</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1457</span> Swelling Behaviour of Kappa Carrageenan Hydrogel in Neutral Salt Solution</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sperisa%20Distantina">Sperisa Distantina</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fadilah%20Fadilah"> Fadilah Fadilah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mujtahid%20Kaavessina"> Mujtahid Kaavessina</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Hydrogel films were prepared from kappa carrageenan by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. The latter consisted of index classification, constant rate of strain, direct, simple shear, and unconfined compression tests. The Boom clay samples exhibited strong swelling tendencies. The suction pressure was measured via different procedures and has been compared to the expected in-situ stress. The undrained shear strength and OCR profile determined from CPTs is not compatible with the experimental measurements, which gave significantly lower values. The observed response can be attributed to the presence of pre-existing discontinuities, as shown in microscale CT scans of the samples. The results of this study demonstrate that the microstructure of the clay prior to testing has an impact on the mechanical behaviour and can cause inconsistencies in the comparison of the laboratory test results with in-situ data. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=boom%20clay" title="boom clay">boom clay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laboratory%20testing" title=" laboratory testing"> laboratory testing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=overconsolidation%20ratio" title=" overconsolidation ratio"> overconsolidation ratio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress-strain%20response" title=" stress-strain response"> stress-strain response</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling" title=" swelling"> swelling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=undrained%20shear%20strength" title=" undrained shear strength"> undrained shear strength</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144267/challenges-in-experimental-testing-of-a-stiff-overconsolidated-clay" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144267.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">146</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1454</span> Design and Development of Sustained Release Floating Tablet of Stavudine </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Surajj%20Sarode">Surajj Sarode</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=G.%20Vidya%20Sagar"> G. Moreover, to study influence of different polymers on its release rate using gas-forming agents, like sodium bicarbonate, citric acid. Floating tablets were prepared by wet granulation method using PVP K-30 as a binder and the other polymers include Pullulan Gum, HPMC K100M, six different formulations with the varying concentrations of polymers were prepared and the tablets were evaluated in terms of their pre-compression parameters like bulk density, tapped density, Haunsner ratio, angle of repose, compressibility index, post compression physical characteristics, in vitro release, buoyancy, floating lag time (FLT), total floating time (TFT) and swelling index. All the formulations showed good floating lag time i.e. less than 3 mins. The batch containing combination of Pullulan Gum and HPMC 100M (i.e. F-6) showed total floating lag time more than 12 h., the highest swelling index among all the prepared batches. The drug release was found to follow zero order kinetics. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Suavudine" title="Suavudine">Suavudine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=floating" title=" floating"> floating</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=total%20floating%20time%20%28TFT%29" title=" total floating time (TFT)"> total floating time (TFT)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gastric%20residence" title=" gastric residence"> gastric residence</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13372/design-and-development-of-sustained-release-floating-tablet-of-stavudine" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13372.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">395</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1453</span> A Soil Stabilization Technique on Apa-Hotami艧 Conveyance Channel</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Sinan%20So%C4%9Fanc%C4%B1">Ali Sinan So臒anc谋</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Apa-Hotam谋艧 conveyance channel is located within in the boundaries of Konya Regional Directorate of Water Works. In some places along the Apa-Hotam谋艧 conveyance canal which will be constructed by Directorate of Water Works of Konya, some swelling soils have been seen. The samples taken from these places have 35-95 kPa swelling pressure. To prevent the swelling pressure arising from the penetration of water to the concrete channel, it was proposed to make 10 cm concrete coating by spreading the geomembrane and geotextile between the soil and concrete. These cyclic phenomena of swelling-shrinkage cause parasitic stresses in structures and at the foundation. These stresses create damage in buildings, highways, pavements, airports and structures lightly loaded. This study was conducted on soil from a site near the hospital of N'gaous (Batna), whose soil is at the origin of cracks in the filler walls of the hospital. After a few years of exploitation, and according to the findings of experts in subdivision of construction and urbanism (SUCH), cracks appeared just after the heavy rains that the region experienced in 1987. Our study shows the need to become aware of the importance of damages occasioned by swellings by adopting construction techniques to solve this problem. The study is to determine a methodology to take into account the effects of swelling in calculating long-term foundations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clay" title="clay">clay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling" title=" swelling"> swelling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shrinkage" title=" shrinkage"> shrinkage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling%20pressure" title=" swelling pressure"> swelling pressure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compressibility" title=" compressibility"> compressibility</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/188293/method-for-predicting-the-deformation-of-a-swelling-clay-of-the-region-of-ngaous-batna-in-algeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/188293.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">30</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1449</span> GPU Accelerated Fractal Image Compression for Medical Imaging in Parallel Computing Platform</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Md.%20Enamul%20Haque">Md. There is several improvements in the implementation of the algorithm as well. Fractal image compression is based on the self similarity of an image, meaning an image having similarity in majority of the regions. We take this opportunity to implement the compression algorithm and monitor the effect of it using both parallel and sequential implementation. Fractal compression has the property of high compression rate and the dimensionless scheme. Compression scheme for fractal image is of two kinds, one is encoding and another is decoding. Encoding is very much computational expensive. On the other hand decoding is less computational. The application of fractal compression to medical images would allow obtaining much higher compression ratios. While the fractal magnification an inseparable feature of the fractal compression would be very useful in presenting the reconstructed image in a highly readable form. However, like all irreversible methods, the fractal compression is connected with the problem of information loss, which is especially troublesome in the medical imaging. A very time consuming encoding process, which can last even several hours, is another bothersome drawback of the fractal compression. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=accelerated%20GPU" title="accelerated GPU">accelerated GPU</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CUDA" title=" CUDA"> CUDA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parallel%20computing" title=" parallel computing"> parallel computing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fractal%20image%20compression" title=" fractal image compression"> fractal image compression</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5645/gpu-accelerated-fractal-image-compression-for-medical-imaging-in-parallel-computing-platform" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5645.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">335</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1448</span> Image Compression Using Block Power Method for SVD Decomposition</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=El%20Asnaoui%20Khalid">El Asnaoui Khalid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chawki%20Youness"> Chawki Youness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aksasse%20Brahim"> Aksasse Brahim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ouanan%20Mohammed"> Ouanan Mohammed</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In these recent decades, the important and fast growth in the development and demand of multimedia products is contributing to an insufficient in the bandwidth of device and network storage memory. Consequently, the theory of data compression becomes more significant for reducing the data redundancy in order to save more transfer and storage of data. In this context, this paper addresses the problem of the lossless and the near-lossless compression of images. This proposed method is based on Block SVD Power Method that overcomes the disadvantages of Matlab's SVD function. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a better compression performance compared with the existing compression algorithms that use the Matlab's SVD function. In addition, the proposed approach is simple and can provide different degrees of error resilience, which gives, in a short execution time, a better image compression. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=image%20compression" title="image compression">image compression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SVD" title=" SVD"> SVD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=block%20SVD%20power%20method" title=" block SVD power method"> block SVD power method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lossless%20compression" title=" lossless compression"> lossless compression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=near%20lossless" title=" near lossless"> near lossless</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/34041/image-compression-using-block-power-method-for-svd-decomposition" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/34041.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">387</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1447</span> An Experimental Study to Mitigate Swelling Pressure of Expansive Tabuk Shale, Saudi Arabia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20A.%20Embaby">A. Severe distress to infrastructures can be caused by the development of heave and swelling pressure in this kind of expansive shale. Among the various techniques for expansive soil mitigation, the removal and replacement technique is very popular for lightly loaded structures and shallow foundations. This paper presents the result of an experimental study conducted for evaluating the effect of type and thickness of the cushion soils on mitigation of swelling characteristics of expanded shale. Seven undisturbed shale samples collected from Al Qadsiyah district, which is located in the Tabuk town north Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, are treated with two types of cushion coarse-grained sediments (CCS); sand and gravel. Each type is represented with three thicknesses, 22%, 33% and 44% in relation to the depth of the active zone. The test results indicated that the replacement of expansive shale by CCS reduces the swelling potential and pressure. It is found that the reduction in swelling depends on the type and thickness of CCS. The treatment by removing the original expansive shale and replacing it by cushion sand with 44% thickness reduced the swelling potential and pressure of about 53.29% and 62.78 %, respectively. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cushion%20coarse-grained%20sediments%20%28CCS%29" title="cushion coarse-grained sediments (CCS)">cushion coarse-grained sediments (CCS)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=expansive%20soil" title=" expansive soil"> expansive soil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saudi%20Arabia" title=" Saudi Arabia"> Saudi Arabia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling%20pressure" title=" swelling pressure"> swelling pressure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tabuk%20Shale" title=" Tabuk Shale"> Tabuk Shale</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64134/an-experimental-study-to-mitigate-swelling-pressure-of-expansive-tabuk-shale-saudi-arabia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64134.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">317</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1446</span> Does Level of Countries Corruption Affect Firms Working Capital Management? </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ebrahim%20Mansoori">Ebrahim Mansoori</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Datin%20Joriah%20Muhammad"> Datin Joriah Muhammad </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Recent studies in finance have focused on the effect of external variables on working capital management. This study investigates the effect of corruption indexes on firms' working capital management. A large data set that covers data from 2005 to 2013 from five ASEAN countries, namely, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, was selected to investigate how the level of corruption in these countries affect working capital management. The results of panel data analysis include fixed effect estimations showed that a high level of countries' corruption indexes encourages managers to shorten the CCC length. Meanwhile, the managers reduce the level of investment in cash and cash equivalents when the levels of corruption indexes increase. Therefore, increasing the level of countries' corruption indexes encourages managers to select conservative working capital strategies by reducing the level of NLB. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ASEAN" title="ASEAN">ASEAN</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corruption%20indexes" title=" corruption indexes"> corruption indexes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=panel%20data%20analysis" title=" panel data analysis"> panel data analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=working%20capital%20management" title=" working capital management "> working capital management </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20352/does-level-of-countries-corruption-affect-firms-working-capital-management" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20352.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">438</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1445</span> Determination of Relationship among Shape Indexes Used for Land Consolidation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Firat%20Arslan">Firat Arslan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hasan%20Degirmenci"> Hasan Degirmenci</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serife%20Tulin%20Akkaya%20Aslan"> Serife Tulin Akkaya Aslan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The aim of the current experiment was to determine the relationship among shape indexes which are used by the researchers in many fields to evaluate parcel shapes which is very important for farming even if these indexes are controversial. In the current study, land consolidation project of Halitaga village in Mersin province in Turkey which has 278 parcel and cover 894.4 ha, was taken as a material. Commonly used indicators such as fractal dimension (FD), shape index (SI), form factor (FORM), areal form factor (AFF) and two distinct area-perimeter ratio (APR-1 and APR2) in land consolidation are used to measure agricultural plot鈥檚 shape. FD was positively correlated with SI, APR-1 and APR-2 whereas it was negatively correlated with FORM and AFF. SI was positively correlated with APR-1 and APR-2 whereas it was negatively correlated with FORM and AFF. As a conclusion, it is likely that these indexes involved may be used interchangeably due to high correlations among them. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GIS" title="GIS">GIS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=land%20consolidation" title=" land consolidation"> land consolidation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parcel%20shape" title=" parcel shape"> parcel shape</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shape%20index" title=" shape index"> shape index</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89511/determination-of-relationship-among-shape-indexes-used-for-land-consolidation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89511.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">187</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1444</span> The Effect of Treated Waste-Water on Compaction and Compression of Fine Soil</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20Attom">M. Two types of fine soils (clayey soils) were selected for this study and classified as CH soil and Cl type of soil. Compaction and compressibility properties such as optimum water content, maximum dry unit weight, consolidation index and swell index, maximum past pressure and volume change were evaluated using both tap and treated waste water. It was found that the use of treated waste water affects all of these properties. The maximum dry unit weight increased for both soils and the optimum water content decreased as much as 13.6% for highly plastic soil. The significant effect was observed in swell index and swelling pressure of the soils. The swell indexed decreased by as much as 42% and 33% for highly plastic and low plastic soils, respectively, when TWW is used. Additionally, the swelling pressure decreased by as much as 16% for both soil types. The result of this research pointed out that the use of treated waste water has a positive effect on compaction and compression properties of clay soil and promise for potential use of this water in engineering applications. Compression therapy is the universally accepted treatment for the management of hypertrophic scarring after severe burns. Mostly stretchable knitted fabrics are used in compression therapy but in the recent past, some studies have also been found on bi-stretch woven fabrics being used as compression garments as they also have been found quite effective in the treatment of oedema. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to compare the compression properties of stretchable knitted and bi-stretch woven fabrics for compression garments. For this purpose four woven structures and four knitted structures were produced having the same areal density and their compression, comfort and mechanical properties were compared before and after 5, 10 and 15 washes. Four knitted structures used were single jersey, single locaste, plain pique and the honeycomb, whereas four woven structures produced were 1/1 plain, 2/1 twill, 3/1 twill and 4/1 twill. The compression properties of the produced samples were tested by using kikuhime pressure sensor and it was found that bi-stretch woven fabrics possessed better compression properties before and after washes and retain their durability after repeated use, whereas knitted stretchable fabrics lost their compression ability after repeated use and the required sub garment pressure of the knitted structures after 15 washes was almost half to that of woven bi-stretch fabrics. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compression%20garments" title="compression garments">compression garments</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=knitted%20structures" title=" knitted structures"> knitted structures</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medical%20textiles" title=" medical textiles"> medical textiles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=woven%20bi-stretch" title=" woven bi-stretch"> woven bi-stretch</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/39769/comparison-of-compression-properties-of-stretchable-knitted-fabrics-and-bi-stretch-woven-fabrics-for-compression-garments" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/39769.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">411</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1442</span> Swelling Behavior of Cross-Linked Poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Salah%20Hamri">Salah Hamri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tewfik%20Bouchaour"> Tewfik Bouchaour</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ulrich%20Maschke"> Ulrich Maschke</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The aim of this works is the study of swelling ratio of cross-linked polymer networks poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA). Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite allows the acquisition of 12 image files every 15 minutes and that results in a large databases sizes. In this paper, a novel image compression method based on the arithmetic coding with the sorted Run Length Coding (SRLC) for MSG images is proposed. The SRLC allows us to find the occurrence of the consecutive pixels of the original image to create a sorted run. The arithmetic coding allows the encoding of the sorted data of the previous stage to retrieve a unique code word that represents a binary code stream in the sorted order to boost the compression ratio. Through this article, we show that our method can perform the best results concerning compression ratio and bit rate unlike the method based on the Run Length Coding (RLC) and the arithmetic coding. Evaluation criteria like the compression ratio and the bit rate allow the confirmation of the efficiency of our method of image compression. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=image%20compression" title="image compression">image compression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arithmetic%20coding" title=" arithmetic coding"> arithmetic coding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Run%20Length%20Coding" title=" Run Length Coding"> Run Length Coding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RLC" title=" RLC"> RLC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sorted%20Run%20Length%20Coding" title=" Sorted Run Length Coding"> Sorted Run Length Coding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SRLC" title=" SRLC"> SRLC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Meteosat%20Second%20Generation" title=" Meteosat Second Generation"> Meteosat Second Generation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MSG" title=" MSG"> MSG</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16704/a-high-compression-ratio-for-a-losseless-image-compression-based-on-the-arithmetic-coding-with-the-sorted-run-length-coding-meteosat-second-generation-image-compression" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16704.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">354</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1440</span> Medical Image Compression Based on Region of Interest: A Review</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sudeepti%20Dayal">Sudeepti Dayal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Neelesh%20Gupta"> Neelesh Gupta</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In terms of transmission, bigger the size of any image, longer the time the channel takes for transmission. Compression is the technique used to reduce the size of an image. In terms of storage, compression reduces the file size which it occupies on the disk. Any image is based on two parameters, region of interest and non-region of interest. There are several algorithms of compression that compress the data more economically. By connecting the QECNN and CARCNN, each CARCNN layer is able to adaptively reduce compression artifacts and preserve details depending on the estimated quality level map generated by the QECNN. The traditional method for determining compression index is consolidation test which is expensive and time consuming. Many researchers have used regression methods to develop empirical equations for predicting compression index from soil properties. Based on a large number of compression index data collected from consolidation tests, the accuracy of some popularly empirical equations were assessed. It was found that primary compression index is significantly overestimated in some equations while it is underestimated in others. The sensitivity analyses of soil parameters including water content, liquid limit and void ratio were performed. The results indicate that the compression index obtained from void ratio is most accurate. The ANOVA (analysis of variance) demonstrates that the equations with multiple soil parameters cannot provide better predictions than the equations with single soil parameter. In other words, it is not necessary to develop the relationships between compression index and multiple soil parameters. Meanwhile, it was noted that secondary compression index is approximately 0.7-5.0% of primary compression index with an average of 2.0%. In the end, the proposed prediction equations using power regression technique were provided that can provide more accurate predictions than those from existing equations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compression%20index" title="compression index">compression index</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clay" title=" clay"> clay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=settlement" title=" settlement"> settlement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=consolidation" title=" consolidation"> consolidation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=secondary%20compression%20index" title=" secondary compression index"> secondary compression index</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20parameter" title=" soil parameter"> soil parameter</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/111582/compression-index-estimation-by-water-content-and-liquid-limit-and-void-ratio-using-statistics-method" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/111582.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">162</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1437</span> In-Situ Quasistatic Compression and Microstructural Characterization of Aluminium Foams of Different Cell Topology</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20A.%20Islam">M. Severe geotechnical complications and consequent structural damages have been arising due to an excessive and differential volumetric change upon wetting and change in water content. Different studies have been carried out concerning the swelling performance of the expansive soils using different additives including phospho-gypsum as an industrial waste product. However, this paper describes the results of a comprehensive testing programme that was carried out to investigate the effect of phospho-gypsum (PG) and sodium chloride (NaCl), as an additive mixture, on the swelling performance of constituent samples of swelling soils. The constituent samples comprise commercial bentonite collected from a natural site, mixed with different percentages of PG-NaCl mixture. The testing programme had been scoped to cover the physical and chemical properties of the constituent samples. In addition, a mineralogical study using x-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed on the collected bentonite and the mixed bentonite with PG-NaCl mixture samples. The obtained results of this study showed significant improvement in the swelling performance of the tested samples with the increase of the proposed PG-NaCl mixture content. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=expansive%20soils" title="expansive soils">expansive soils</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industrial%20waste" title=" industrial waste"> industrial waste</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mineralogical%20study" title=" mineralogical study"> mineralogical study</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling%20performance" title=" swelling performance"> swelling performance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=X-ray%20diffraction" title=" X-ray diffraction"> X-ray diffraction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60475/improving-swelling-performance-using-industrial-waste-products" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60475.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">270</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1435</span> Date Palm Compreg: A High Quality Bio-Composite of Date Palm Wood</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mojtaba%20Soltani">Mojtaba Soltani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Edi%20Suhaimi%20Bakar"> Edi Suhaimi Bakar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hamid%20Reza%20Naji"> Hamid Reza Naji</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Date Palm Wood (D.P.W) specimens were impregnated with Phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin at 15% level, using vacuum/pressure method. The Meteosat Second Generation satellite (MSG) allows the acquisition of 12 image files every 15 minutes. Which results a large databases sizes. The transform selected in the images compression should contribute to reduce the data representing the images. The Radon transform retrieves the Radon points that represent the sum of the pixels in a given angle for each direction. Linear predictive coding (LPC) with filtering provides a good decorrelation of Radon points using a Predictor constitute by the Symmetric Nearest Neighbor filter (SNN) coefficients, which result losses during decompression. Finally, Run Length Coding (RLC) gives us a high and fixed compression ratio regardless of the input image. In this paper, a novel image compression method based on the Radon transform and linear predictive coding (LPC) for MSG images is proposed. MSG image compression based on the Radon transform and the LPC provides a good compromise between compression and quality of reconstruction. A comparison of our method with other whose two based on DCT and one on DWT bi-orthogonal filtering is evaluated to show the power of the Radon transform in its resistibility against the quantization noise and to evaluate the performance of our method. Evaluation criteria like PSNR and the compression ratio allows showing the efficiency of our method of compression. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=image%20compression" title="image compression">image compression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radon%20transform" title=" radon transform"> radon transform</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=linear%20predictive%20coding%20%28LPC%29" title=" linear predictive coding (LPC)"> linear predictive coding (LPC)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=run%20lengthcoding%20%28RLC%29" title=" run lengthcoding (RLC)"> run lengthcoding (RLC)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=meteosat%20second%20generation%20%28MSG%29" title=" meteosat second generation (MSG)"> meteosat second generation (MSG)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16434/meteosat-second-generation-image-compression-based-on-the-radon-transform-and-linear-predictive-coding-comparison-and-performance" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16434.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">421</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1433</span> PEINS: A Generic Compression Scheme Using Probabilistic Encoding and Irrational Number Storage</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=P.%20Jayashree">P. Some applications need effective storage while some other applications need effective communication over networks and data reduction comes as a handy solution to meet out both requirements. Most of the data compression techniques are based on data statistics and may result in either lossy or lossless data reductions. Though lossy reductions produce better compression ratios compared to lossless methods, many applications require data accuracy and miniature details to be preserved. A variety of data compression algorithms does exist in the literature for different forms of data like text, image, and multimedia data. In the proposed work, a generic progressive compression algorithm, based on probabilistic encoding, called PEINS is projected as an enhancement over irrational number stored coding technique to cater to storage issues of increasing data volumes as a cost effective solution, which also offers data security as a secondary outcome to some extent. The proposed work reveals cost effectiveness in terms of better compression ratio with no deterioration in compression time. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a
