During this period of self isolating, its been scary not knowing when i would be able to return to 'home', which for me, means being outside in nature and being able to physically see my friends. The spiral that surrounds the keyhole represents the grey area which is covid 19, while the sunny sky in the middle represents the time where we will, eventually be able to join our society again. Where we will be able to return home, and into situations where we feel most comfortable and happy. The big metalic key says 'freedom' which represents the only way we can return home (self isolating keeping 1.5m apart ect) Within the metalic keys that are scattered throughout the artwork are embedded with words which i have felt during the pandemic which contrast very strongly with the big key that says 'freedom'. The last thing i would like to add is that there are multiple figures that are seen 'falling' this is to show that despite us being physically separate from each other, we aren't alone in this situation, and we all must work together and not get complacent when it comes to the situation at hand. I wanted a painting of it in my house. I painted it because I felt connected to Irrunytju. I made really good friends there and I haven't forgotten them. I liked it there. It was never noisy. We could walk everywhere or ride our bikes and everyone was always friendly. In my home, I mostly remain in my very dark room (depicted as the door on the left) and only leave about midday. In comparison, the living room is brightly lit with large windows at either side, making golden hour quite a beautiful sight. I wanted to depict this in my piece. I did this piece digitally but I tried to recreate the sketch-like way that I draw art by hand to try and make it even lighter and brighter. I tried to make a piece that is peaceful, yet loud and bold at the same time. But what we do with that beauty all around our homes and lives is our choice. I created this art work for my beautiful mother for her birthday and I created it to advocate awareness for the reason that many of my family struggled with the loss of so many true angels, the reason being cancer. Many ideas, phrases and concepts of which I brainstormed were acted upon, as I included aspects such as contented reminiscences, the texture and feel of the stone walls of my house, the significance of Australian plants and nature in my life, and more within my artwork. To me, the idea of ‘home’ means family, memories, nature and comfort. The significance of home is portrayed through the symbolism of agapanthus flowers, my house and additional elements such as gumtrees and bushes, all of which are important to my personal perception of home and what it means to me. When presented to create a lino print with the meaning being what home means to us, the first thing that came to mind was my dog. I chose to do this because for my whole life I grew up with a dog in my household and having a dog has been very influential throughout my life, for example coming home from school and knowing I get to come home and be greeted by a happy face and a wagging tail. The people featured in the piece are all family friends of mine who I go camping with each year over the same weekend. The trip in 2020 was an especially important trip because it was the tenth year in a row that the camping trip has taken place. I am very close to all the people I go with and have known all of them for most of my life. Although each year we go to different places, each camping site feels like home because of the people I go with. They are like my second family and we all look out for each other and support each other. My grandparents have always been in the same house, on the same street since they were married in 1953. My family on my dad’s side travel a lot and we have never all been in one place for more than two years. This means when we are all together at my grandparents’ house on special occasions, like Christmas and New Year’s, everyone feels settled and happy because we know the house will always be where we all come together. In the background and foreground, there are leaves and vines that intertwine around the lino and on the hands. This represents togetherness and how we are all connected. The rose represents love and relationships, how a family displays affection represents home and its comfortableness. Although, a family can have their ‘ups and downs’, a rose’s thorns can appeal to this negative side of the beautiful relationship. The lavender plant always makes it feel like home no matter where I am. </p><p>My house was made of bricks that were very unique and different shapes and tints, which I tried to reflect in a clean way on my linocut by playing with textures throughout the heavy use of bricks in my piece. I used this contrasting brickwork to make if feel more real and more than just a picture of a brick house. The artwork reflects this statement by the two words that are put just above the head of the person sitting down. Both these words mean home, one is written in another language to show diversity of the subject.</p><p>My artwork is aimed at engaging the audience. It’s supposed to be confusing. I used a range of lines and circles to define the background the ground and main subject. The background is busy and wraps around the person keeping them in a state of pause. The ground is also sloped to fit a steep hill, which an insolent human being knows is risky, and can fall. When I think of home I don’t think of a bed or a house, instead I think of my family and the people I love. Over the las two years I spent my time travelling throughout Europe with my family. This has greatly changed my perspective of the word home. The more we moved around the more I came to the realisation that, to me, home was not a house but instead it is the memories that fill me with happiness. This is why I chose to use the words home is where the heart is, no matter where you are in the world, if you are with the people that make you feel happy and safe you will be home. I used the earth to show that my home is not located in one place, it can be anywhere. The back of the picture is filled with stars, they are each unique just like people and they fill the black sky with bursts if white. Surrounding the window are some flowers that are all grown in my garden. My artwork reflects my home because that window is in my bedroom and I always sit there and read because it makes me feel safe. I believe home and the feeling of safety are connected so that is why I included that window and books. </p><p>I created the flowers around the outside because I have always loved gardening and being outside. I grow all of these flowers in my garden so I thought it would be important to include them. To me, home means a place that you can feel safe and secure, whilst being surrounded by people you love. </p><p>Many things make me feel happy and safe when I’m home, and I have included these things in my linocut. We share our property with kangaroos, bandicoots, echidnas, possums and many bird species. I frequently see native animals coming up close to the house on the lawn and deck near our back door. When I think of <i>home</i> I think of wildlife, especially magpies at my house. I think of sharing our environment with bird and animals. </p><p>One particular magpie has become very familiar with my family, recognising our faces and eating from my hand. I have chosen to create a print of this magpie because it represents a connection to the natural world. My artwork shows an Australian magpie on a backyard lawn. I wanted to use the simplicity of the linocut to show the boldness and simple beauty of an Australian magpie. I hoped that the bold, sharp lines of the magpie’s beak and body would be reflected in the linocut. It means to have somewhere you can go to feel safe, protected and make good memories. Home does not represent through bad and negative things but positive and personal.</p><p>Therefore, my artwork represents the theme of home through memories and experiences. It is something I have chosen which only I would understand personally because it is from personal places and memories. I am connected to Marion Bay as I have described it as my ‘second home’ so I wanted to portray that through a design. The hands are reaching to each other for security and love, and to each of them, the other is their home. It shows that home is not always a place or an address, but it where someone is most comfortable and secure, and with people, they feel loved. </p><p>The subject of the piece are two hands. These two hands are on the paper twice, once printed normally, and one printed inverted. This inversion shows that no matter what happens, these two people will always hold each other in their hearts, and they will always be there for one another. The hands are big and centre and are shown to be reaching out to each other, to touch or to hold the other hand.
