But they said, "What <i>is that</i> to us? You may see to that." <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And, throwing the pieces of silver into the temple, he withdrew; and, going away, he hanged himself. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the high priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, "It is not lawful to cast them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood." <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And, taking counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for a burial-place for the strangers. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Wherefore, that field was called "A field of blood" until this day. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him Who <i>was</i> priced, Whom some of the sons of Israel priced, <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me."<p> <A name="12"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus before Pilate<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../luke/23.htm">Luke 23:1–5</a>; <a href ="../john/18.htm#28">John 18:28–40</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Art Thou the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, <FR>"You say it."<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And, while He was being accused by the high priests and elders, He answered nothing. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then says Pilate to Him, "Hearest Thou not how many things they testify against Thee?" <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And He did not answer him, not even to one word; so that the governor greatly wondered.<p> <A name="16"></a><p class="hdg">The Crowd Chooses Barabbas<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/15.htm#6">Mark 15:6–11</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#13">Luke 23:13–25</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And at <i>the</i> feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner, whom they desired; <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>and they then had a noted prisoner called Barabbas. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>When, therefore, they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do ye desire <i>that</i> I should release to you? Barabbas or Jesus Who is called Christ?" <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For he knew that because of envy they delivered Him up.<p> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "<i>Have</i> nothing to do with that Righteous One; for I suffered many things today in a dream because of Him." <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But the high priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes, that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And the governor, answering, said to them, "Which of the two do ye desire that I should release to you?" And they said, Barabbas." <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Pilate says to them, "What, then, shall I do to Jesus Who is called Christ?" They all say, "Let Him be crucified." <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But he said, "Why, what evil did He perform?" And they were crying out the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"<p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Pilate Washes His Hands<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/15.htm#12">Mark 15:12–15</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but rather a tumult was being made, taking water, washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this <i>Man</i>. Ye shall see to <i>it</i>." <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And all the people, answering, said, "His blood <i>be</i> upon us, and upon our children." <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then he released to them Barabbas; but, having scourged Jesus, he delivered <i>Him</i> up to be crucified.<p> <A name="28"></a><p class="hdg">The Soldiers Mock Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/15.htm#16">Mark 15:16–20</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#63">Luke 22:63–65</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm">John 19:1–15</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then the soldiers of the governor, taking Jesus into the Praetorium, gathered to Him the whole band. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And, having stripped Him, they put on Him a scarlet robe; <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>and, having platted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and, kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And, having spit on Him, they took the reed, and smote Him on the head; <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>and, when they mocked Him, they took off the robe from Him, and put on His own garments, and led Him away to crucify Him.<p> <A name="33"></a><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/15.htm#21">Mark 15:21–32</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#26">Luke 23:26–43</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#16">John 19:16–27</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And, coming out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they impressed to bear the cross.<p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And, having come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say "Place of a skull," <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>they gave Him to drink wine mingled with gall; and, having tasted <i>it</i>, He would not drink.<p> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And, having crucified Him, they divided His garments among them, casting lots; <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>and, sitting down, they watched Him there. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And they put over His head His accusation, "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."<p> <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then are there crucified with Him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And those passing by were reviling Him, wagging their heads, <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>and saying, "Thou Who destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, save Thyself: if Thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross." <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Likewise also the high priests, mocking, with the scribes and elders, were saying, <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>"Others He saved, Himself He cannot save! King of Israel is He! let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on Him! <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>He has trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He desireth Him; because He said, 'I am God's Son.'" <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And the robbers, who were crucified with Him, were reproaching Him with the same thing.<p> <A name="46"></a><p class="hdg">The Death of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/15.htm#33">Mark 15:33–41</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#44">Luke 23:44–49</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#28">John 19:28–30</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And from the sixth hour there came darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And, about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, <FR>"ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?"<Fr> that is, <FR>"My God! My God! Why didst Thou forsake Me?"<Fr> <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And some of those standing there, hearing <i>it</i>, said, "This One is calling for Elijah. <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And straightway one of them, running and taking a sponge, and filling it with vinegar, and putting it on a reed, was giving Him to drink. <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>But the rest said, "Let alone! Let us see whether Elijah is coming to save Him!" <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>And Jesus, crying again with a loud voice, yielded up His spirit. <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two, from top to bottom; and the earth was shaken; and the rocks were rent; <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; <A name="54"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>and, coming forth out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered into the holy city, and appeared to many. <A name="55"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, seeing the earthquake, and the things that were taking places were exceedingly frightened, saying, Truly, This was a Son of God!"<p> <A name="56"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>And many women were there, beholding from afar, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him; <A name="57"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.<p> <A name="58"></a><p class="hdg">The Burial of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/15.htm#42">Mark 15:42–47</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#50">Luke 23:50–56</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#38">John 19:38–42</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>And, evening having come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, whose name <i>was</i> Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus. <A name="59"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>This man, going to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus.
