In biblical times, signs often served as divine indicators of God's presence or intentions, such as the plagues in Egypt or the parting of the Red Sea. The absence of signs suggests a perceived distance from God, possibly due to the people's disobedience or the consequences of their actions. This sentiment echoes the lament in Lamentations 2:9, where the gates of Zion are desolate, and the prophets receive no vision from the Lord. Theologically, this can be seen as a call to repentance and a reminder of the need for faith even when God seems silent.
There is no longer any prophet.
Prophets in Israel served as God's mouthpieces, delivering His messages and guidance to the people. The absence of prophets indicates a time of spiritual drought and a lack of direct communication from God. Historically, this could refer to the period after the destruction of the First Temple when prophetic voices were scarce. This absence is significant because prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel played crucial roles in guiding and correcting the nation. Theologically, this absence can be seen as a foreshadowing of the ultimate Prophet, Jesus Christ, who would come to fulfill the law and the prophets (Matthew 5:17).
And none of us knows how long this will last.
This phrase captures the uncertainty and despair of the people, who are unable to see an end to their suffering. It reflects a common biblical theme of waiting on God's timing, as seen in the cries of the psalmists and prophets who often asked, "How long, O Lord?" (Psalm 13:1, Habakkuk 1:2). This uncertainty can be a test of faith, encouraging believers to trust in God's sovereignty and timing. In a broader biblical context, it points to the eschatological hope that, despite present sufferings, God will ultimately bring about His purposes and restore His people, as promised in Revelation 21:4.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Asaph
Traditionally attributed as the author of Psalm 74, Asaph was a Levite and one of the leaders of David's choir. There is no more any prophet. It has been said that this shows the psalm not to have been written on the occasion of the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, since Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel were, all of them, then living. But the writer only means to say that there are no prophets in Palestine, where he is residing. Jeremiah in Egypt, Ezekiel on the banks of Chebar, Daniel in Babylon, are nothing to him, even if he knows of their existence, and in no way fill up the gap whereof he complains. Neither is there among us any who knoweth how long. Jeremiah's prophecy of the seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11, 12) did net remove the doubt, since it was uncertain from what event the seventy years were to be counted. Jeremiah's prophecies, moreover, were not yet, in all probability, collected into a volume, and so may not have been known to the psalmist.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
There are no
לֹ֥א (lō)
Adverb -
