The jawbone, specifically of a donkey, is depicted as an instrument of divine empowerment and deliverance for the Israelites through the actions of Samson, one of the judges of Israel.

Biblical Account:

The primary reference to a jawbone is found in Judges 15:15-17. In this passage, Samson, who had been bound by the men of Judah and handed over to the Philistines, finds himself empowered by the Spirit of the Lord. As the Philistines approach him, "he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and struck down a thousand men with it" (Judges 15:15). This remarkable feat underscores the supernatural strength bestowed upon Samson by God, allowing him to achieve victory against overwhelming odds.

After the battle, Samson declares, "With the jawbone of a donkey I have piled them into heaps. With the jawbone of a donkey I have slain a thousand men" (Judges 15:16). He then discards the jawbone, and the place is named Ramath-lehi, which means "Hill of the Jawbone."

Symbolism and Themes:

1. Divine Empowerment: The jawbone serves as a symbol of God's power working through an unlikely instrument. Samson's victory with such a humble tool highlights the theme that God can use the weak and the foolish things of the world to confound the mighty (1 Corinthians 1:27).

2. Deliverance: The account of Samson and the jawbone illustrates God's deliverance of His people from their enemies. Despite Israel's recurring disobedience and idolatry, God raises up judges like Samson to deliver them from oppression.

3. Judgment and Justice: Samson's actions with the jawbone can also be seen as an act of divine judgment against the Philistines, who were oppressing the Israelites. It serves as a reminder of God's justice and His willingness to intervene on behalf of His covenant people.

4. Human Weakness and Divine Strength: The narrative emphasizes the contrast between human weakness and divine strength. Samson, despite his personal flaws and impulsive nature, is used by God to achieve His purposes. The jawbone, an ordinary and seemingly insignificant object, becomes a powerful weapon in the hands of one empowered by God.

Cultural and Historical Context:

In the ancient Near East, the jawbone of a donkey would have been considered an unusual weapon. Typically, warriors would have used swords, spears, or other conventional weapons. The use of a jawbone underscores the miraculous nature of Samson's victory and serves to magnify the power of God rather than the prowess of Samson himself.

Theological Implications:

The account of Samson and the jawbone invites reflection on the ways God chooses to work in the world. It challenges believers to trust in God's ability to use unexpected means and people to accomplish His will. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of relying on God's strength rather than human ability.

References in Other Biblical Texts:

While the jawbone is most prominently featured in the account of Samson, it is not a recurring symbol throughout the rest of Scripture. However, the themes of divine empowerment and deliverance are echoed in various other biblical narratives, reinforcing the consistent message of God's sovereignty and faithfulness to His people.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Of an ass afforded Samson a weapon for the great slaughter of the Philistines (Judges 15.15), in which he slew a thousand men. In verse 19 the Authorized Version reads, "God clave a hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout." This is a mis-translation of the words. The rendering should be as in the Revised Version, "God clave the hollow place that is in Lehi," etc., Lehi (q.v.) being the name of the hill where this conflict was waged, possibly so called because it was in shape like a jaw-bone.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
(n.) The bone of either jaw; a maxilla or a mandible.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
JAW; JAWBONE; JAW TEETH
jo, jo'-bon (lechi, "cheek (bone)," "jaw (bone)"): In Job 41:2, the Revised Version (British and American) gives "pierce his jaw through with a hook" for the King James Version "bore his jaw through with a thorn" (see HOOK; LEVIATHAN). Psalm 22:15, "My tongue cleaveth to my jaws (malqoach)," is descriptive of the effect of a fever or physical torture, a dryness and a horrible clamminess. Malqochayim is an ancient dual form meaning the two jaws, and, metaphorically, malqoach indicates that which is caught between the jaws, booty, prey, including captives (Numbers 31:11, 26, 32 Isaiah 49:24 f).

Figurative:

(1) Of the power of the wicked, with a reference to Divine restraint and discipline: "I brake the jaws (Hebrew "great teeth") of the unrighteous" (Job 29:17 Proverbs 30:14); compare Psalm 58:6, "Break out the great teeth (malta`oth, "jaw teeth") of the young lions, O Yahweh." Let the wicked be deprived of their ability for evil; let them at least be disabled from mischief. Septuagint reads "God shall break," etc. (Compare Edmund Prys's Metrical Paraphrase of the Psalms, in the place cited.) "A bridle. in the jaws of the peoples" (Isaiah 30:28; compare 2 Kings 19:28) is descriptive of the ultimate check of the Assyrian power at Jerusalem, "as when a bridle or lasso is thrown upon the jaws of a wild animal when you wish to catch and tame him" (G.A. Smith Isaiah, I, 235).
