and his food<MG5160> was locusts<MG200> and wild<MG66> honey<MG3192>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>At<MG5119> that<MG5119> time<MG5119> Jerusalem<MG2414> was going<MG1607> out<MG1607> to him, and all<MG3956> Judea<MG2449> and all<MG3956> the region<MG4066> around<MG4066> the Jordan<MG2446>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>and they were being baptized<MG907> by him in the Jordan<MG2446> River<MG4215>, as they confessed<MG1843> their sins<MG266>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But when he saw<MG3708> many<MG4183> of the Pharisees<MG5330> and Sadducees<MG4523> coming<MG2064> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>baptism<MG908>, he said<MG3004> to them, “You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>offspring<MG1081> of vipers<MG2191>, who<MG5101> warned<MG5263> you to flee<MG5343> from the wrath<MG3709> to<MG3195> come<MG3195>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> produce<MG4160> fruit<MG2590> consistent<MG514> with repentance<MG3341>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and do not assume<MG1380> that you can say<MG3004> to yourselves<MG1438>, ‘We have<MG2192> Abraham<MG11> <i>as our</i> father<MG3962>’; for I tell<MG3004> you that God<MG2316> is able<MG1410>, from these<MG3778> stones<MG3037>, to raise<MG1453> up<MG1453> children<MG5043> for Abraham<MG11>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the axe<MG513> is already<MG2235> laid<MG2749> at the root<MG4491> of the trees<MG1186>; therefore<MG3767>, every<MG3956> tree<MG1186> that does not bear<MG4160> good<MG2570> fruit<MG2590> is being cut<MG1581> down<MG1581> and thrown<MG906> into the fire<MG4442>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“As for me, I baptize<MG907> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>with water<MG5204> for repentance<MG3341>, but He who is coming<MG2064> after<MG3694> me is mightier<MG2478> than I, and I am<MG1510> not fit<MG2425> to remove<MG941> His sandals<MG5266>; He will baptize<MG907> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>with the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151> and fire<MG4442>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>His winnowing<MG4425> fork<MG4425> is in His hand<MG5495>, and He will thoroughly<MG1245b> clear<MG1245b> His threshing<MG257> floor<MG257>; and He will gather<MG4863> His wheat<MG4621> into the barn<MG596>, but He will burn<MG2618> up<MG2618> the chaff<MG892> with unquenchable<MG762> fire<MG4442>.” <p class="hdg">The Baptism of Jesus</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Jesus<MG2424> *arrived<MG3854> from Galilee<MG1056> at the Jordan<MG2446>, <i>coming</i> to John<MG2491> to be baptized<MG907> by him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But John<MG2491> tried to prevent<MG1254> Him, saying<MG3004>, “I have<MG2192> <i>the</i> need<MG5532> to be baptized<MG907> by You, and <i>yet</i> You are coming<MG2064> to me?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424>, answering<MG611>, said<MG3004> to him, “Allow<MG863> <i>it</i> at this<MG737> time<MG737>; for in this<MG3779> way<MG3779> it is fitting<MG4241> for us to fulfill<MG4137> all<MG3956> righteousness<MG1343>.” Then<MG5119> he *allowed<MG863> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>After He was baptized<MG907>, Jesus<MG2424> came<MG305> up<MG305> immediately<MG2117> from the water<MG5204>;
