and the Life was the light of men. <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.<p> <A name="7"></a><p class="hdg">The Witness of John<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The same came for a testimony, that he might testify concerning the Light, that all might believe through him. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He was not the Light; but he came, that he might testify concerning the Light.<p> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>He was the true Light That lighteth every man coming into the world. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world knew Him not. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>He came to His own <i>possessions</i>, and those <i>who were</i> His own received Him not. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those believing in His name; <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>who were born, not of bloods, nor of <i>the</i> will of <i>the</i> flesh, nor of <i>the</i> will of man, but of God.<p> <A name="15"></a><p class="hdg">The Word Became Flesh<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And the Word became flesh, and tabernacled among us, (and we beheld His glory?glory as of the Only Begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>John testifies concerning Him, and has cried, saying, "This was He of Whom I said, 'He That cometh after me hath become before me, because He was before me;'" <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>because out of His fulness we all received, and grace for grace: <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>because the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, Who is in the bosom of the Father, He declared Him.<p> <A name="20"></a><p class="hdg">The Mission of John the Baptist<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/3.htm">Matthew 3:1–12</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm">Mark 1:1–8</a>; <a href ="../luke/3.htm">Luke 3:1–20</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent forth priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, "Who are you?" <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, "I am not the Christ." <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he says, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>They said therefore, to him, "Who are you? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say concerning yourself?" <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>He said, "'I <i>am</i> a voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as said Isaiah the prophet.<p> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And they had been sent from among the Pharisees. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And they asked him, and said to him, "Why, then, do you immerse, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>John answered them, saying, "I immerse in water: in your midst standeth One Whom ye know not? <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>the One coming after me, the latchet of Whose sandal I am not worthy to unloose." <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing.<p> <A name="30"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus the Lamb of God<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/3.htm#13">Matthew 3:13–17</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm#9">Mark 1:9–11</a>; <a href ="../luke/3.htm#21">Luke 3:21–22</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>On the morrow he sees Jesus coming to him, and he says, "Behold, the Lamb of God Who taketh away the sin of the world! <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>This is He of Whom I said, 'After me cometh a Man Who hath become before me, because He was before me.' <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And I knew Him not; but, that He might be manifested to Israel, for this cause I came immersing in water." <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And John testified, saying, "I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of Heaven, and He abode upon Him. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And I knew Him not; but He who sent me to immerse in water, He said to me, 'Upon Whomsoever you shall see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, the Same is He Who immerseth in <i>the</i> Holy Spirit.' <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And I have seen, and have testified, that This is the Son of God."<p> <A name="36"></a><p class="hdg">The First Disciples<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/4.htm#18">Matthew 4:18–22</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm#16">Mark 1:16–20</a>; <a href ="../luke/5.htm">Luke 5:1–11</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Again, on the morrow, John was standing, and two of his disciples; <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>and, looking upon Jesus as He was walking, says, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And Jesus, turning and beholding them following, saith to them, <FR>"What are ye seeking?"<Fr> They said to Him, "Rabbi," (which, being translated, means Teacher), "where abidest Thou?" <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>He saith to them, <FR>"Come and ye shall see."<Fr> They came, therefore, and saw where He was abiding, and they abode with Him that day: it was about the tenth hour. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard <i>it</i> from John, and followed Him. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>He first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, "We have found the Messiah," (which, being translated, is Christ). <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>He led him to Jesus. Jesus looking on him, said, <FR>"You are Simon, the son of John; you shall be called Cephas,"<Fr> (which is translated Peter).<p> <A name="44"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>On the morrow, He wished to go forth into Galilee; and He findeth Philip, and saith to him, <FR>"Follow Me."<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him, "We have found Him of Whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote?Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of Joseph." <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And Nathanael said to him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip says to him, "Come and see." <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and He saith to him, <FR>"Behold, an Israelite, indeed, in whom there is no guile!"<Fr> <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>Nathanael says to Him, "Whence knowest Thou me?" Jesus answered, and said to him, <FR>"Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."<Fr> <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>Nathaniel answered Him, "Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel." <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>Jesus answered, and said to him, <FR>"Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe?
