Stealing violates the trust and community integrity that God desires for His people. In the ancient Near Eastern context, theft was a serious offense that disrupted social harmony and economic stability. The command not to steal is reiterated in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:15) and is foundational for maintaining justice and righteousness. In the New Testament, Paul echoes this command in Ephesians 4:28, urging believers to work honestly and share with those in need, reflecting a transformed life in Christ.
You must not lie or deceive one another.
Lying and deception are condemned because they undermine relationships and community trust. In the biblical context, truthfulness is a reflection of God's character, who is described as a God of truth (Deuteronomy 32:4). The prohibition against lying is also found in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:16), emphasizing its importance in maintaining justice and social order. Deception is seen as a tool of the enemy, as illustrated in the story of the serpent in Genesis 3. In the New Testament, Jesus identifies Himself as "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6), and believers are called to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). This command highlights the call to live in integrity and honesty, reflecting the nature of Christ in our interactions with others.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Moses
The prophet and leader of the Israelites who received the laws from God, including the instructions found in Leviticus.

2. Israelites
The chosen people of God to whom the laws in Leviticus were given, as they were being formed into a holy nation.

3. Mount Sinai
The place where Moses received the Law from God, including the commandments found in Leviticus.

4. The Tabernacle
The central place of worship for the Israelites, symbolizing God's presence among His people, where the laws were to be upheld.

5. The Covenant
The agreement between God and the Israelites, which included the laws and commandments as a guide for holy living.
Teaching Points
Integrity in Relationships
The command not to steal or deceive is foundational for building trust and integrity in our relationships with others.

Reflecting God's Character
As God's people, we are called to reflect His holiness and truthfulness in our actions and words.

Community Impact
Living truthfully and honestly strengthens the community of believers and serves as a witness to the world.

Personal Accountability
Each believer is responsible for their actions and must strive to live in accordance with God's standards.

Spiritual Growth
Adhering to these commands is part of the sanctification process, helping us grow in Christlikeness.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Leviticus 19

What insights does the Bible offer on hacking?

What does the Bible say about cheating?

What insights does the Bible offer on hacking?

Is there any historical or archeological basis for believing such a deceitful blessing would stand in that culture (Genesis 27)?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(11) Ye shall not steal.--This injunction, which forms the eighth commandment of the Decalogue (Exodus 20:15), most probably has here a primary reference to the conduct of the owners of fields and vineyards. They are cautioned that by depriving the poor of his prescribed right to the corner of the fields, and to the gleanings of the harvest and vintage, they commit theft. Hence the Jewish canonists laid it down that he who puts a basket under a vine at the time of gathering grapes robs the poor.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 11. - Stealing, cheating, and lying are classed together as kindred sins (see chapter Leviticus 6:2, where an example is given of theft performed by means of lying;
