welcomed to Albuquerque like a rock star.<p> Lobo fans, who endured a losing season a year ago, greeted him with enthusiasm and high expectations.<p> Whether New Mexico (8-2) reaches those expectations remains to be seen. But so far, so good. The Lobos won their first seven games under Alford before losing back-to-back contests to Mississippi and rival New Mexico State.<p> "Coach Alford is the coach we needed here," guard Jamaal Smith told the Daily Lobo. "When he came in, it was exciting because he is a college basketball legend and kind of a celebrity at the same time. You have to respect him because of his basketball history."<p> Alford was an All-America guard at Indiana in the 1980s under coach Bobby Knight, and helped lead the Hoosiers to the 1987 NCAA championship before launching his coaching career.<p> San Diego State coach Steve Fisher was an assistant at Michigan when Alford was at Indiana.<p> "You knew he would be a coach," Fisher recalled. "His dad was an icon in the state of Indiana as a high school coach. He played like a coach and he played for one of the greatest coaches ever. He just knew how to play and that usually translates into knowing how to communicate that to somebody else."<p> <div class="continue">Story continues below</div> <div id="ad_300" class="ad"> <div id="ad6Sp"></div> </div> Alford is trying to instill in the Lobos the qualities that made him a great player.<p> "He played under Coach Knight and he preaches the same stuff now: defense, discipline and intensity and stuff like that  the way he played back in the day," said UNM guard J.R. Giddens.<p> It just so happens that Alford faces Knight, his mentor and former coach, this Saturday when the Lobos entertain Texas Tech. Knight holds a 3-1 record against Alford in four meetings between the two coaches. This game will mark the first time an Alford-coached team will have a homecourt advantage.<p> <b>MWC IN THE RANKINGS: </b>BYU's emergence in the national rankings the end of November was the earliest for an MWC team since 1999-2000 when Utah was ranked in at least one of the polls for eight straight weeks to start that season. A year ago, Air Force jumped into the national rankings in December.<p> <b>MWC IN THE NATIONAL STATS:</b> Air Force is No. 4 in the country in scoring defense, giving up 54.2 points per game. Utah is No. 5 in field goal percentage, shooting 52.3 percent from the floor. TCU is No. 16 in steals, averaging 10.6 per game.<p> Individually, Colorado State's <b>Willie Gardner </b>is No. 9 in the nation in free throw percentage (93.3) and UNLV guard Marcus Lawrence is No. 1 in assist-to-turnover ratio (9.33) per contest.<p> <b>NOTES:</b> With an 8-2 record, San Diego State matched its best 10-game start in its Division I history ... TCU halted a three-game losing streak with last week's victory over Texas Southern ... UNLV has started 7-2, equaling its start last season, which ended with a Sweet 16 appearance ... Utah's <b>Johnnie Bryant</b> is the only non-starter among MWC scoring leaders, averaging 11.6 points per game ...
