Trends are reviewed according to regional research traditions, chronological periods and research themes. It is concluded that processualism encouraged grand narratives on themes such as trade, the origins of towns and state formation, while the postprocessual concern with agency and meaning has fostered study of social identity, gender, religious belief, sensory perception and spatial experience. It is argued that processualism created an artificial dichotomy between economic/scientific approaches on the one hand, and social/theoretical approaches on the other. This is progressing satisfactorily and it is now envisaged that this PhD thesis will be submitted in Autumn 2012. 5. EMAP supported through an MA scholarship for Rob O'Hara (Archer Heritage Ltd), the completion of his two-year, part-time MA in Archaeology at UCD, with the successful submission of his MA thesis entitled: An Iron Age and early medieval cemetery at Collierstown 1, Co. Meath: Interpreting the changing character of a burial ground. This MA thesis was submitted to UCD School of Archaeology in August 2010 and was awarded, in tandem with Rob O'Hara's course work, a First Class Honours grade in September 2010. This MA thesis is here submitted to INSTAR as EMAP Report 4.4. Several UCD School of Archaeology MA students were also supported by EMAP (listed below). 6. EMAP completed the edits and revisions of its monograph; Early Medieval Ireland: Archaeological Excavations 1930-2004, with the rewriting of several chapters and the copy editing of all text. This book-which will be the first synthesis of early medieval archaeology in Ireland to be published in twenty years-will be published by the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin in Autumn 2011 (a limited circulation version of this text is submitted here to INSTAR as EMAP 4.5). 7. EMAP organised and hosted an international conference entitled; Early Medieval Settlements in NorthWest Europe, AD 400-1100, held in UCD on 26-28 November 2010. This conference was established and supported by INSTAR and also received financial and other support from the OPW, UCD School of Archaeology and the John Hume Global Irish Institute at UCD. The conference was widely advertised) with posters and programmes distributed to all Irish heritage and cultural institutions and to all archaeological units in Irish and UK universities.
