Belsky</strong></p> </div> <p>The University of Akron School of Law will hold an event to celebrate the retirement and portrait unveiling of former dean Martin H. Belsky on Thursday, April 14, 2022, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Welcome remarks will begin at 6 p.m. in the School of Law McDowell Common, 150 University Ave. A reception will follow the portrait unveiling. </p> <p>Belsky joined School of Law in January 2008 as dean and Randolph Baxter Professor of Law. Returning to the faculty full time in 2012, he enthusiastically shared his wisdom and experience with his students, to whom he was extremely dedicated. Throughout his time at the university, he has been very active in the community, chairing and serving on many commissions, including but not limited to, committees on energy, privacy, ethics, religious understanding, gerontology and aging, criminal justice, and science and the law. </p> <p>“A devoted educator, colleague, community servant and family member, Emeritus Dean Belsky is an inspiration to all who know him,” School of Law Dean Emily Janoski-Haehlen said. “We encourage Marty’s current and former students and friends and colleagues at the University and in the community to join us for this celebration.”</p> <p>Belsky began his career in 1969 as a prosecutor, and then chief prosecutor in Philadelphia. Beginning in 1975, he served both as counsel to the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives and as chief counsel to the Special House Committee on the Outer Continental Shelf (offshore drilling). From 1979 to 1982, he served first as deputy general counsel and then assistant administrator of the Federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.</p> <p>He began his academic career in 1982 as associate professor of law and director of the multi-disciplinary Center for Governmental Responsibility at the University of Florida. From 1986 to 1995, he served as dean and president and professor at Albany Law School.
