This reflects the importance of organized leadership and representation within the community. Each tribe having a leader ensures that the distribution of land is fair and that each tribe's interests are considered. This mirrors the earlier appointment of tribal leaders for census purposes in <a href="/numbers/1-4.htm">Numbers 1:4-16</a>, emphasizing the structured governance God established for His people. The role of these leaders can be seen as a precursor to the later establishment of judges and kings in Israel's history.<p><b>to distribute the land.</b><br>The distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel is a fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob regarding the inheritance of Canaan (<a href="/genesis/12-7.htm">Genesis 12:7, 26</a>:3, 28:13). This allocation is not just a practical matter but a divine mandate, symbolizing God's faithfulness and the realization of His covenant. The land distribution is also a type of the spiritual inheritance believers receive in Christ, as seen in <a href="/ephesians/1-11.htm">Ephesians 1:11</a>. With the exception <span class= "ital">of </span>Caleb, the names of the princes selected for this purpose are not mentioned elsewhere.<p><span class= "bld"><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/numbers/34.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 18.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">One prince of every tribe.</span> This was arranged no doubt in order to insure fairness in fixing the boundaries between the tribes, which had to be done after the situation of the tribe was determined by lot; the further subdivision of the tribal territory was probably left to be managed by the chiefs of the tribe itself. Of these tribe princes (see on Numbers 13:1; Joshua 14:1), Caleb is the only one whose name is known to us, and he had acted in a somewhat similar capacity forty years before. This may of itself account for the tribe of Judah being named first in the list, especially as Reuben was not represented; but the order in which the other names follow is certainly remarkable. Taken in pairs (Judah and Simeon, Manasseh and Ephraim, etc.), they advance regularly from south to north, according to their subsequent position on the map. Differing as this arrangement does so markedly from any previously adopted, it is impossible to suppose that it is accidental. We must conclude either that a coincidence so apparently trivial was Divinely prearranged, or that the arrangement of the names is due to a later hand than that of Moses. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/numbers/34-18.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Appoint</span><br /><span class="heb">תִּקְח֖וּ</span> <span class="translit">(tiq·ḥū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3947.htm">Strong's 3947: </a> </span><span class="str2">To take</span><br /><br /><span class="word">one</span><br /><span class="heb">אֶחָ֛ד</span> <span class="translit">(’e·ḥāḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Number - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_259.htm">Strong's 259: </a> </span><span class="str2">United, one, first</span><br /><br /><span class="word">leader</span><br /><span class="heb">וְנָשִׂ֥יא</span> <span class="translit">(wə·nā·śî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5387.htm">Strong's 5387: </a> </span><span class="str2">An exalted one, a king, sheik, a rising mist</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from each</span><br /><span class="heb">אֶחָ֖ד</span> <span class="translit">(’e·ḥāḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Number - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_259.htm">Strong's 259: </a> </span><span class="str2">United, one, first</span><br /><br /><span class="word">tribe</span><br /><span class="heb">מִמַּטֶּ֑ה</span> <span class="translit">(mim·maṭ·ṭeh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4294.htm">Strong's 4294: </a> </span><span class="str2">A staff, rod, shaft, branch, a tribe</span><br /><br /><span class="word">to distribute</span><br /><span class="heb">לִנְחֹ֥ל</span> <span class="translit">(lin·ḥōl)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5157.htm">Strong's 5157: </a> </span><span class="str2">To inherit, to occupy, to bequeath, distribute, instate</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the land.</span><br /><span class="heb">הָאָֽרֶץ׃</span> <span class="translit">(hā·’ā·reṣ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_776.htm">Strong's 776: </a> </span><span class="str2">Earth, land</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/numbers/34-18.htm">Numbers 34:18 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/numbers/34-18.htm">OT Law: Numbers 34:18 You shall take one prince of every (Nu Num.) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/numbers/34-17.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Numbers 34:17"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Numbers 34:17" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/numbers/34-19.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Numbers 34:19"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Numbers 34:19" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
