Il neutrone risente debolmente di queste forze in quanto ha carica elettrica nulla. Tuttavia il neutrone è soggetto all'azione della <a href="/wiki/Forza_nucleare_forte" class="mw-redirect" title="Forza nucleare forte">forza nucleare forte</a>, caratterizzata da un corto raggio d'azione, efficace soltanto nelle vicinanze di un nucleo. Per cui il neutrone si comporta in modo simile ad una sfera solida (probabilmente quanto di più lontano esista dal neutrone sotto moltissimi altri aspetti) che impatta altri corpi solidi (i nuclei del mezzo). Un neutrone libero prosegue il suo tragitto indisturbato fino a quando non urta "frontalmente" con un nucleo. </p><p>A causa della ridotta sezione trasversale dei nuclei rispetto allo spazio che li separa gli uni dagli altri, queste collisioni avvengono molto raramente e i neutroni percorrono grandi distanze prima di collidere. Distanze ancora maggiori vengono percorse prima di essere assorbiti da un nucleo, tanto maggiori quanto maggiore è la velocità del neutrone: la <a href="/wiki/Dose_assorbita" title="Dose assorbita">dose assorbita</a> da un materiale irraggiato con neutroni è tanto maggiore e tanto più concentrata in superficie quanto più bassa è la loro velocità:<sup id="cite_ref-29" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-29"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>29<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p> <ul><li>i neutroni <b>veloci</b> da fissione (10 keV-10 MeV) depositano energia principalmente attraverso l'<a href="/wiki/Urto_elastico" title="Urto elastico">urto elastico</a> con più nuclei leggeri in successione, con cammini liberi medi di trasporto che vanno dal centimetro alla decina di centimetri in acqua e tessuti biologici. Il segno negativo di tale momento magnetico simula la rotazione di cariche negative in senso antiorario intorno alla direzione dello spin. L'unico mezzo per controllare i neutroni liberi è quello di porre dei nuclei sulla loro <a href="/wiki/Traiettoria" title="Traiettoria">traiettoria</a>, in modo che i neutroni vengano rallentati, deflessi o assorbiti nella collisione.
