Found in Northern California&#8217;s highly-saline Mono Lake, the GFAJ-1 bacteria exists in an environment that has very little phosphorous, an element that had previously been considered essential for all living things in order to build DNA. To cope with this problem, the bacteria is able to substitute highly-toxic arsenic for phosphorous, in its cell components. The fact that a microbe is able to survive in such a fashion opens up the possibilities for where life could exist on other planets, and will require a rethink on NASA&#8217;s part regarding its search for extraterrestrial life forms. <a href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/nasa-discovers-new-bacteria/17147/">Read More</a> </p> </div> </div> <div class="summary_item "> <div class="summary_details"> <div class="sd_top"> </div> <div class="clear_both"> <h2><a href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/rubber-device-mimics-bird-song/17035/">Rubber device mimics bird song</a></h2> <div class="summary_details_left"> <p>By <a href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/author/ben-coxworth/">Ben Coxworth</a></p> <p><em>15:42 November 24, 2010</em></p> </div> <div class="summary_details_right"> <p></p> <p><img src="/web/20101202211430im_/http://www.gizmag.com/images/icons/splashyIcons/image_modernist.png" alt=""/> <a href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/rubber-device-mimics-bird-song/17035/picture/124933/">2 Pictures</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <center><a class="noback" href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/rubber-device-mimics-bird-song/17035/"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20101202211430im_/http://images.gizmag.com/hero/birddevice.jpg" title="Physicists have created a mechanical bird song-replicating device, in an effort to underst..." alt="Physicists have created a mechanical bird song-replicating device, in an effort to underst..."/></a></center> <div class="summary"> <p>Zebra finches, beware! But an invention by Colorado State University (CSU) veterinarians has provided students with a substrate that is infinitely closer to the real thing by developing artificial body parts that closely resemble real skin, muscles and vessels &#8211; they can even bleed! It does, however, have some drawbacks &#8211; luminol is potentially toxic, it sometimes dilutes blood evidence to the point that DNA can&#8217;t be detected, it can smear blood spatter patterns, and it sometimes provides false positives. Now, researchers from the University of South Carolina have developed a blood-detecting camera that reportedly does none of those things. <a href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/infrared-camera-detects-blood-stains/16934/">Read More</a> </p> </div> </div> <div class="summary_item "> <div class="summary_details"> <div class="sd_top"> </div> <div class="clear_both"> <h2><a href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/deep-impact-probe-flyby-hartley2-comet/16898/">NASA's Deep Impact studies Hartley 2 comet close-up</a></h2> <div class="summary_details_left"> <p>By <a href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/author/tannith -cattermole/">Tannith Cattermole</a></p> <p><em>09:48 November 10, 2010</em></p> </div> <div class="summary_details_right"> <p></p> <p></p> </div> </div> </div> <center><a class="noback" href="/web/20101202211430/http://www.gizmag.com/deep-impact-probe-flyby-hartley2-comet/16898/"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20101202211430im_/http://images.gizmag.com/hero/hartley2.jpg" title="The peanut-shaped Hartley 2 comet is only the fifth comet to be studied at such close rang..." alt="The peanut-shaped Hartley 2 comet is only the fifth comet to be studied at such close rang..."/></a></center> <div class="summary"> <p>Mission controllers from the University of Maryland-led EPOXI mission celebrated last week as NASA's Deep Impact space probe flew close by the Hartley 2 comet, sending back rare and valuable data about the comet. After much development and student input, the devices are now ready for shipping.
