Les entreprises qui déclarent mettre en œuvre des programmes de management des connaissances exercent en réalité des activités très variées. Chaque année, le nombre d’ouvrages, d’articles et de logiciels relatifs au sujet connaît un accroissement massif. Il en résulte une confusion quant à sa définition, et des prescriptions vagues, voire contradictoires, à l’attention des managers. Pour clarifier les choses, Charles Despres & Daniele Chauvel ont entrepris un programme de recherche dans lequel ils ont analysé de près la littérature académique, ainsi que les écrits des consultants et des entreprises. Ils en ont conclu que le management des connaissances pouvait être analysé selon 4 axes : le processus cognitif, la nature des connaissances (tacites ou explicites), le niveau auquel se développe l’activité (individu, groupe ou organisation) et enfin , le contexte dans lequel les connaissances sont utilisées. Ces axes permettent de définir une carte du management des connaissances sur laquelle on peut reporter les différentes activités de l’entreprise ; finalement il y a identité entre cette carte et le management des connaissances.
