so the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> arrested<MH6113> him and confined<MH631> him in prison<MH1004, 3608>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> invaded<MH5927> the entire<MH3605> land<MH776>, and went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Samaria<MH8111> and besieged<MH6696a, 5921> it for three<MH7969> years<MH8141>. <p class="hdg">Israel Captive</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>In the ninth<MH8671> year<MH8141> of Hoshea<MH1954>, the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> captured<MH3920> Samaria<MH8111> and led<MH1540> <i>the people of</i> Israel<MH3478> into<MH1540> exile<MH1540> to Assyria<MH804b>, and settled<MH3427> them in Halah<MH2477> and Habor<MH2249>, <i>on</i> the river<MH5104> of Gozan<MH1470>, and in the cities<MH5892b> of the Medes<MH4074>. <p class="hdg">Why Israel Fell</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now <i>this</i> came<MH1961> about<MH1961> because<MH3588> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> had sinned<MH2398> against the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430>, who had brought<MH5927> them up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, from under<MH8478> the hand<MH3027> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714>; and they had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>feared<MH3372a> other<MH312> gods<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They also <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>followed<MH1980> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>customs<MH2708> of the nations<MH1471> whom<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had driven<MH3423> out<MH3423> from the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, and <i>in the customs</i> of the kings<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> which<MH834> they had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>introduced<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>did<MH2644> things<MH1697> secretly<MH2644> against<MH5921> the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430> which<MH834> were not right<MH3653a>. Moreover, they built<MH1129> for themselves high<MH1116> places<MH1116> in all<MH3605> their towns<MH5892b>, from watchtower<MH4026> to fortified<MH4013> city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And they set<MH5324> up<MH5324> for themselves memorial<MH4676> stones<MH4676> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Asherim<MH842> on every<MH3605> high<MH1364> hill<MH1389> and under<MH8478> every<MH3605> green<MH7488> tree<MH6086>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>and there<MH8033> they burned<MH6999> incense<MH6999> on all<MH3605> the high<MH1116> places<MH1116> as the nations<MH1471> <i>did</i> that the LORD<MH3068> had taken<MH1540> into<MH1540> exile<MH1540> before<MH4480, 6440> them; and they did<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> things<MH1697>, provoking<MH3707> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They served<MH5647> idols<MH1544>, concerning which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had said<MH559> to them, “You shall not do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Yet the LORD<MH3068> warned<MH5749b> Israel<MH3478> and Judah<MH3063> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>through<MH3027> all<MH3605> His prophets<MH5030> <i>and</i> every<MH3605> seer<MH2374>, saying<MH559>, “Turn<MH7725> back<MH7725> from your evil<MH7451a> ways<MH1870> and keep<MH8104> My commandments<MH4687> <i>and</i> My statutes<MH2708> in accordance with all<MH3605> the Law<MH8451> which<MH834> I commanded<MH6680> your fathers<MH1>, and which<MH834> I sent<MH7971> to you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>through<MH3027> My servants<MH5650> the prophets<MH5030>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>However, they did not listen<MH8085>, but stiffened<MH7185> their neck<MH6203> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>like their fathers<MH1>, who<MH834> did not believe<MH539> in the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>They rejected<MH3988a> His statutes<MH2706> and His covenant<MH1285> which<MH834> He made<MH3772> with their fathers<MH1>, and His warnings<MH5715> which<MH834> He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>gave<MH5749b> them. And they followed<MH1980, 310> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>idols<MH1892> and became<MH1891> empty<MH1891>, and followed<MH310> the nations<MH1471> that surrounded<MH5439> them, <i>about</i> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680> them not to do<MH6213a> as they <i>did.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And they abandoned<MH5800a> all<MH3605> the commandments<MH4687> of the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430> and made<MH6213a> for themselves cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> images<MH4541a>: two<MH8147> calves<MH5695>. And they made<MH6213a> an <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Asherah<MH842>, and worshiped<MH2331c> all<MH3605> the heavenly<MH8064> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>lights<MH6635>, and served<MH5647> Baal<MH1168a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then they made their sons<MH1121> and their daughters<MH1323> pass<MH5674a> through the fire<MH784>, and they practiced<MH7080> divination<MH7081> and interpreting<MH5172> omens<MH5172>, and gave<MH4376> themselves over<MH4376> to do<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068>, provoking<MH3707> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> was very<MH3966> angry<MH599> with Israel<MH3478>, and He removed<MH5493> them from His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>sight<MH6440>; no<MH3808> one was left<MH7604> except<MH7534b, 905> the tribe<MH7626> of Judah<MH3063>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Judah<MH3063> did not keep<MH8104> the commandments<MH4687> of the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430> either<MH1571>, but they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>followed<MH1980> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>customs<MH2708> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>which<MH834> Israel<MH3478> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>introduced<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> rejected<MH3988a> all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> of Israel<MH3478> and afflicted<MH6031a> them and handed<MH5414, 3027> them over<MH5414> to plunderers<MH8154>, until<MH5704, 834> He had cast<MH7993> them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>out<MH7993> of His sight<MH6440>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>When<MH3588> He had torn<MH7167> Israel<MH3478> from the house<MH1004> of David<MH1732>, they made<MH4427a> Jeroboam<MH3379> the son<MH1121> of Nebat<MH5028> king<MH4427a>. Then Jeroboam<MH3379> drove<MH5067b> Israel<MH3478> away<MH5067b> from following<MH310> the LORD<MH3068> and misled<MH2398> them into a great<MH1419> sin<MH2401>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> walked<MH1980> in all<MH3605> the sins<MH2403b> of Jeroboam<MH3379> which<MH834> he committed<MH6213a>; they did not desist<MH5493> from them <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>until<MH5704, 834> the LORD<MH3068> removed<MH5493> Israel<MH3478> from His sight<MH6440>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> He had spoken<MH1696> through<MH3027> all<MH3605> His servants<MH5650> the prophets<MH5030>. So Israel<MH3478> went<MH1540> into<MH1540> exile<MH1540> from their own land<MH127> to Assyria<MH804b> until<MH5704> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <p class="hdg">Cities of Israel Filled with Strangers</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> brought<MH935> <i>people</i> from Babylon<MH894>, Cuthah<MH3575>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>Avva<MH5755>, Hamath<MH2574>, and Sepharvaim<MH5617>, and settled<MH3427> <i>them</i> in the cities<MH5892b> of Samaria<MH8111> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. So they took<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of Samaria<MH8111> and lived<MH3427> in its cities<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And at the beginning<MH8462> of their living<MH3427> there<MH8033>, they did not fear<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068>; therefore the LORD<MH3068> sent<MH7971> lions<MH738> among them that were killing<MH2026> some of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>So they spoke<MH559> to the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>, saying<MH559>, “The nations<MH1471> whom<MH834> you have taken<MH1540> into<MH1540> exile<MH1540> and settled<MH3427> in the cities<MH5892b> of Samaria<MH8111> do not know<MH3045> the custom<MH4941> of the God<MH430> of the land<MH776>; so He has sent<MH7971> lions<MH738> among them, and behold<MH2009>, they are killing<MH4191> them because<MH834> they do not know<MH3045> the custom<MH4941> of the God<MH430> of the land<MH776>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> issued<MH6680> commands<MH6680>, saying<MH559>, “Take<MH1980> one<MH259> of the priests<MH3548> there<MH8033> whom<MH834> you led<MH1540> into<MH1540> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>exile<MH1540>, and have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>him go<MH1980> and live<MH3427> there<MH8033>; and have him teach<MH3384> them the custom<MH4941> of the God<MH430> of the land<MH776>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So one<MH259> of the priests<MH3548> whom<MH834> they had led<MH1540> into<MH1540> exile<MH1540> from Samaria<MH8111> came<MH935> and lived<MH3427> in Bethel<MH1008>, and taught<MH3384> them how<MH349> they were to fear<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>But every<MH1471> nation<MH1471> was <i>still</i> making<MH6213a> gods<MH430> of its own, and they put<MH5117> them in the houses<MH1004> of the high<MH1116> places<MH1116> which<MH834> the people<MH8118> of<MH8118> Samaria<MH8118> had made<MH6213a>, every<MH1471> nation<MH1471> in their cities<MH5892b> in which<MH834> they lived<MH3427>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>The men<MH376> of Babylon<MH894> made<MH6213a> Succoth-benoth<MH5524>, the men<MH376> of Cuth<MH3575> made<MH6213a> Nergal<MH5370>, the men<MH376> of Hamath<MH2574> made<MH6213a> Ashima<MH807>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>and the Avvites<MH5757> made<MH6213a> Nibhaz<MH5026> and Tartak<MH8662>; and the Sepharvites<MH5616> were burning<MH8313> their children<MH1121> in the fire<MH784> to Adrammelech<MH152> and Anammelech<MH6048>, the gods<MH430> of Sepharvaim<MH5617>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>They also feared<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>appointed<MH6213a> from their entire<MH7098> population<MH7098> priests<MH3548> of the high<MH1116> places<MH1116>, who acted<MH6213a> for them in the houses<MH1004> of the high<MH1116> places<MH1116>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>They feared<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068>, yet they were serving<MH5647> their own gods<MH430> in accordance with the custom<MH4941> of the nations<MH1471> from among whom<MH834> they had been taken<MH1540> into<MH1540> exile<MH1540>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>To this<MH2088> day<MH3117> they act<MH6213a> in accordance with the earlier<MH7223> customs<MH4941>: they do not fear<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068>, nor<MH369> do they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>follow<MH6213a> their statutes<MH2708>, their ordinances<MH4941>, the Law<MH8451>, or the commandments<MH4687> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> commanded<MH6680> the sons<MH1121> of Jacob<MH3290>, whom<MH834> He named<MH7760, 8034> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with them and commanded<MH6680> them, saying<MH559>, “You shall not fear<MH3372a> other<MH312> gods<MH430>, nor<MH3808> bow<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to them, nor<MH3808> serve<MH5647> them, nor<MH3808> sacrifice<MH2076> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>But the LORD<MH3068>, who<MH834> brought<MH5927> you up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> with great<MH1419> power<MH3581b> and with an outstretched<MH5186> arm<MH2220>, Him you shall fear<MH3372a>, and to Him you shall bow<MH2331c> down<MH2331c>, and to Him you shall sacrifice<MH2076>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And the statutes<MH2706>, the ordinances<MH4941>, the Law<MH8451>, and the commandment<MH4687> which<MH834> He wrote<MH3789> for you, you shall take<MH8104> care<MH8104> to do<MH6213a> always<MH3605, 3117>; and you shall not fear<MH3372a> other<MH312> gods<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>The covenant<MH1285> that I have made<MH3772> with you, you shall not forget<MH7911>, nor<MH3808> shall you fear<MH3372a> other<MH312> gods<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>But you shall fear<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>; and He will save<MH5337> you from the hand<MH3027> of all<MH3605> your enemies<MH340>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>However, they did not listen<MH8085>, but they kept acting<MH6213a> in accordance with their earlier<MH7223> custom<MH4941>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/17-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>So while these<MH428> nations<MH1471> feared<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068>, they also served<MH5647> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>idols<MH6456>;
