bk">It is often said that empty pockets teach a million lessons</h2><p id="0a6e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ot ou gu ov b hs ow ox oy hv oz pa pb og pc pd pe ok pf pg ph oo pi pj pk pl gn bk">However, my story starts with the absence of a pocket itself! I honed my skills at NIFT Delhi and graduated as a Fashion Designer in 2016. I was groomed to not just design clothing collections but to design experiences. My idea of fashion was driven by effecting change in lifestyles of those consuming what I create.</p><p id="e6ff" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ot ou gu ov b hs pm ox oy hv pn pa pb og po pd pe ok pp pg ph oo pq pj pk pl gn bk">Designers from all walks of life have a creative process. Going about designing a clothing line begins with forecasting what is in and what is not. The degree of detailing with which this trend analysis is undertaken directly influences the final output. Based on the observations generated from this phase of creation, mood boards are developed, fabrics are chosen, and prints are finalised. Once, the actuals are defined is when the physical process of development begins.</p><h2 id="7446" class="nx ny gu bf nz oa ob dy oc od oe ea of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or os bk">The politics of pockets</h2><p id="ea44" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ot ou gu ov b hs ow ox oy hv oz pa pb og pc pd pe ok pf pg ph oo pi pj pk pl gn bk">It was in the summer of 2018, that the fashion firm that I was working for decided to come up with a clothing line for the modern-day woman. A woman who is bold, fierce, detail-oriented, and someone who cares about wearing her attitude. It was a collection I could relate to and I believed in the vision behind it. I was entrusted with being one of the chief designers of this collection. After 4 months of intense work, our project was nearing completion. However, right before the unveiling of the collection, I was asked to remove pockets from most of my designs. I strongly contested this decision, as I believe that the modern woman needs mobility. Her wardrobes must be as unabashed as she herself truly is! My empathy was not allowing me to remove the pockets. I cared about the user experience.</p><h2 id="a95c" class="nx ny gu bf nz oa ob dy oc od oe ea of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or os bk">The real fashion faux pas</h2><p id="5a9b" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ot ou gu ov b hs ow ox oy hv oz pa pb og pc pd pe ok pf pg ph oo pi pj pk pl gn bk">The reason I was asked to do so was because we wanted to bring down the cost of our samples. But this really made me think — Why was it our go to solution? Why was it so easy for us to overlook that pockets are practical. Reflecting back — I realised that it was easy because pockets have been an age old struggle. While they may seem like a trivial matter, they are objects that embody our patriarchal systems and sexist histories. Already much has been written about how sexism dictates whether a garment gets usable pockets or not. When I zoomed out further — I also realised that —the Fashion industry as a whole, lacks a great deal of empathy for its consumers. For most parts — fashion puts form over function. With not much say in the matter and a heavy heart, I had to do away with the pockets. The concept resonated hard with me as user experience was my driving force. Though fashion design was the first love of my life, I realised my misgivings with it as well. It was less utility-oriented and non-iterative in nature. A collection once released could not be continually improved. These are exactly the things that brought me closer to UX design. Customer experience was at the heart of it and that is what I cared about the most. It was like an outlet for my empathetic self.</p><p id="8c60" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ot ou gu ov b hs pm ox oy hv pn pa pb og po pd pe ok pp pg ph oo pq pj pk pl gn bk">I was able to translate my creative process from the fashion industry to the UX industry as well. Trend forecasting was replaced by Questionnaires, Interviews, User Observations, and Research. Moodboards translated into identifying themes, insights, and opportunities. More than these translations, I was able to go beyond with UX design as well. I had the ability to experiment, iterate and innovate. Once released, the build is never final as we constantly keep improving it.</p><h2 id="fe69" class="nx ny gu bf nz oa ob dy oc od oe ea of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or os bk">Zeta and I: Match made in heaven</h2><p id="1ab2" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ot ou gu ov b hs ow ox oy hv oz pa pb og pc pd pe ok pf pg ph oo pi pj pk pl gn bk">At Zeta, I am given a chance to challenge myself and learn something new every day. The satisfaction I derive out of improving the end user’s experience and adding value to their life is a feeling which gives me a constant high. A woman who is bold, fierce, detail-oriented, and someone who cares about wearing her attitude. It was a collection I could relate to and I believed in the vision behind it. I was entrusted with being one of the chief designers of this collection. After 4 months of intense work, our project was nearing completion. However, right before the unveiling of the collection, I was asked to remove pockets from most of my designs. I strongly contested this decision, as I believe that the modern woman needs mobility. Her wardrobes must be as unabashed as she herself truly is! My empathy was not allowing me to remove the pockets. But this really made me think — Why was it our go to solution? Why was it so easy for us to overlook that pockets are practical. Reflecting back — I realised that it was easy because pockets have been an age old struggle. While they may seem like a trivial matter, they are objects that embody our patriarchal systems and sexist histories. Already much has been written about how sexism dictates whether a garment gets usable pockets or not. When I zoomed out further — I also realised that —the Fashion industry as a whole, lacks a great deal of empathy for its consumers. For most parts — fashion puts form over function. With not much say in the matter and a heavy heart, I had to do away with the pockets. The concept resonated hard with me as user experience was my driving force. Though fashion design was the first love of my life, I realised my misgivings with it as well. It was less utility-oriented and non-iterative in nature. A collection once released could not be continually improved. These are exactly the things that brought me closer to UX design. Customer experience was at the heart of it and that is what I cared about the most.
