hands you a guidebook when you’re diagnosed with ADHD.</p><p id="16ed" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">In my experience, there’s not even a pamphlet.</p><p id="f61a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">In 2021, at age 31, my doctor diagnosed me with ADHD. As a child, doctors had already diagnosed me, but I had forgotten about it.</p><p id="8fc5" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">My child psychologist downplayed my concerns. She didn’t explain possible symptoms except for my lack of focus, which is why I was there. She also treated medication as the only option.</p><p id="8cae" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">The psychologist believed it was primarily a learning disability and that it wouldn’t affect my life outside of school much.</p><p id="0229" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">She even suggested I would “grow out of it” as I aged.</p><p id="a6ef" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">Boy, was she wrong.</p><p id="cf75" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">So, I lived with unacknowledged, untreated ADHD for the next 20 years and managed to make it work.</p><p id="dca4" class="pw-post-body-paragraph ou ov hs hk b il ow ox oy io oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph pi pj pk pl pm pn po hl fq">In the meantime, I wondered why my brain felt different from everyone else’s.
