Retrieved Dec 03 2024 from <a href="https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Iconic+Jaguar+purrs+up+Goodwood+hill.-a0165544768">https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Iconic+Jaguar+purrs+up+Goodwood+hill.-a0165544768</a></span></li> </ul> </div> <P>Byline: By Rhona Ganguly</P><P>Jaguar's reputation as a British motor manufacturing icon was celebrated at the weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.</P><P>Models from the 1950s to the present day, including the Coventry-based manufacturer's Le Mans-winning XJR-9, were put on display at the show in West Sussex.</P><P>Powered by the Jaguar V12, the XJR-9 earned its place in the history books after claiming first, fourth and sixteenth place at the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hour Race.</P><P>Other vehicles which graced the annual hill climb, held in the grounds of Goodwood House, included the record breaking XK120 Montlhery Fixed Head Coupe.</P><P>The car was made famous as the Seven Days and Seven Nights car driven by Stirling Moss, Bert Hadley, Jack Fairman and Leslie Johnson, where it averaged 100.31mph (161.43 km/h) and covered 16,851 miles.</P><P>The 1956 long nose D-Type, which this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of an unparalleled 1-2-3-4-6 finish at Le Mans in 1957, featured in the Classic Endurance Cars group and Jaguar also entered the XJ13 in the International Sports Cars category.</P><P>In addition to paying homage to its illustrious racing past, Jaguar demonstrated the supreme ride and handling of its award-winning XKR.</P><P>A standard factory specification model at the expert hands of Jaguar's Driving Dynamics expert, Mike Cross, was put on show with a specially-modified PalmerSport XKR, which can usually be found racing around the Bedford Autodrome corporate circuit.</P><P>Geoff Cousins, UK MD for Jaguar Cars, said: "Goodwood is always a great opportunity for Jaguar to demonstrate it is a great British brand not only with a rich and illustrious heritage but an exciting future with a new contemporary design direction that is relevant to today's customers."</P><P>Richards rules out bid, page 32</P><P>CAPTION(S):</P><P>Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason prepares to drive up the start line of the Goodwood Festival of Speed; Stirling Moss prepares to drive up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and, below, behind the wheel of a Jaguar C-Type at le Mans in 1951</P> <div id="article_footer"> <div class="separator1"></div> <div id=copy_publisher>COPYRIGHT 2007 MGN Ltd.<br> No portion of this article can be reproduced without the express written permission from the copyright holder. </div> <div id=copy_gale>Copyright 2023 Gale, Cengage Learning.
