He was a co-founder of Kibbutz Ein Gev on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, at the foot of the Golan Heights. He helped organize Haganah, the underground Jewish military group that sought to rescue Jews from Nazi persecution and, remarkably, he met with a then-mid-level Nazi official -- <a href="/people/782/000028698/">Adolf Eichmann</a> -- just before the outbreak of World War II, securing the release of 3,000 Jews from German concentration camps and their safe passage to England.<p> After the formation of Israel, he worked in the administration of Prime Minister <a href="/people/625/000056457/">David Ben-Gurion</a>, and was elected Mayor of Jerusalem in 1965, and re-elected to six terms spanning 28 years. During his tenure as Mayor, he was widely credited with rebuilding the capitol as a modern city. He left office in 1993, losing a re-election campaign to Likud candidate and future Prime Minister <a href="/people/058/000114713/">Ehud Olmert</a>. He is the namesake of Teddy Kollek Football Stadium (commonly called Teddy Stadium). His son, Amos Kollek, is a well-known actor and director.<p><b>Father:</b> Alfred Kollek (banker)<br><b>Mother:</b> Margaret Kollek<br><b>Wife:</b> Tamar Schwarz Kollek (m. 1937, one son, one daughter)<br><b>Son:</b> Amos Kollek (actor/director, b. 1947)<br><b>Daughter:</b> Osnat Kollek-Sachs (artist, b. 1960)<br><p> <a href="/honors/623/000165128/">Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels</a> 1985<br> <a href="/gov/081/000114736/">Israeli Mayor</a> Jerusalem (1965-93)<br> <a href="/gov/886/000164394/">Israeli Official</a> Director-General of Prime Minister's office (1952-65)<br> <a href="/gov/886/000164394/">Israeli Official</a> Diplomat, assigned to US (1951-52)<br> <a href="/gov/886/000164394/">Israeli Official</a> Foreign Ministry (1949-51)<br> <a href="/lists/352/000044220/">Hungarian Ancestry</a> <br> <p> <font size=-2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">FILMOGRAPHY AS ACTOR</font><br> <a href="/films/397/000091124/">My Architect: A Son's Journey (13-Apr-2003)</a> · Himself<br> <a href="/films/852/000254090/">Double Edge (30-Sep-1992)</a> · Himself<br> <a href="/films/177/000239457/">Goodbye, New York (17-May-1985)</a> <br><p> <b>Author of books:</b><br> <i>My Jerusalem: Twelve Walks in the World's Holiest City</i> (<tt>1990</tt>, with Shulamith Eisner)<br><i>Jerusalem: A History of Forty Centuries</i> (<tt>1968</tt>, with Moshe Pearlman)<br><i>For Jerusalem: A Life</i> (<tt>1978</tt>, with Amos Kollek)<br><i>Pilgrims to the Holy Land: The Story of Pilgrimage through the Ages</i> (<tt>1970</tt>, with Moshe Pearlman)<br><p> <br> <p> <table> <tr> <td align=right valign=middle style="padding-right: 5px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 22px; font-style: italic; color: #ff3333;">New!</span><br> <a href="http://mapper.nndb.com/" class="fotmlink" style="font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; color: #dd0000;">NNDB MAPPER</a></td> <td valign=middle align=right style="border-left: 1px solid #bbb; padding-left: 5px;">Create a map starting with</td> <td valign=middle align=right><a href="http://mapper.nndb.com/start/?id=170467"><img src="/man.gif" border=0 style="padding: 2px;"></a></td> <td align=left valign=middle> <a href="http://mapper.nndb.com/start/?id=170467">Teddy Kollek</a></td> </tr> </table> <font face="Trebuchet MS, arial, helvetica, sans-serif" size="-2">Requires Flash 7+ and Javascript.</font> <br><br><p> <font size=-1>Do you know something we don't?</font><br> <font size=-1><a href="http://commentary.nndb.com/submit/feedback/?id=170467" rel="nofollow">Submit a correction or make a comment about this profile</a></font><br> <p> <br><br><p><font size=-1>Copyright ©2019 Soylent Communications</font><p> </td></tr></table> </td></tr> </table> </td> <td width=180 align="center" valign="top" style="padding: 0px 0px 8px 25px;"></td></tr> </table> </center> </body> </html>
