The reference to Seneh is found in the context of a significant military event involving Jonathan, the son of King Saul.

Scriptural Citation:
1 Samuel 14:4 : "Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost. One was called Bozez and the other Seneh."

Geographical Context:
Seneh is identified as one of the two rocky crags that flanked the pass through which Jonathan and his armor-bearer approached the Philistine garrison. The other crag is named Bozez. This pass is located in the region of Michmash, a strategic area during the time of King Saul's reign over Israel. The terrain is characterized by its rugged and steep cliffs, which played a crucial role in the military tactics employed by Jonathan.

Historical and Theological Significance:
The account of Jonathan's daring attack on the Philistine outpost is a testament to his faith and courage. The presence of Seneh and Bozez highlights the natural fortifications that Jonathan had to navigate, underscoring the difficulty and danger of his mission. This event is significant as it demonstrates Jonathan's reliance on God for victory, despite the overwhelming odds. His faith is evident in his words to his armor-bearer: "Come, let us cross over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few" (1 Samuel 14:6).

Symbolic Interpretation:
In a broader theological context, Seneh, along with Bozez, can be seen as representing the obstacles and challenges that believers may face in their spiritual journey. Jonathan's successful navigation of these crags, with God's help, serves as an encouragement to trust in divine providence and strength when confronted with seemingly insurmountable difficulties.

Archaeological Insights:
While the exact identification of Seneh remains uncertain, the geographical description in 1 Samuel provides clues to its location. Archaeological surveys in the region of Michmash have identified potential sites that match the biblical description of the pass. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the historical and geographical setting of the biblical narrative.

Conclusion:
The mention of Seneh in the Bible, though brief, is part of a larger narrative that highlights themes of faith, courage, and divine intervention. Jonathan's account, set against the backdrop of the rugged terrain of Seneh and Bozez, continues to inspire believers to trust in God's power and guidance in the face of adversity.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Seneh
same as Senaah
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Seneh
(thorn), the name of one of the two isolated rocks which stood in the "passage of Michmash," (1 Samuel 14:4) 6 1/2 Miles north of Jerusalem.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
The acacia; rock-thorn, the southern cliff in the Wady es-Suweinit, a valley south of Michmash, which Jonathan climbed with his armour-bearer (1 Samuel 14:4, 5). The name means "acacia," and may have been given to it from the thorn bushes growing upon it. Josephus (BJ, V, ii, 1) mentions the "plain of thorns" near Gabathsaul. We may hear an echo of the old name in that of Wady Suweinit, "valley of the little thorn tree," the name by which the gorge is known today. The cliff must have stood on the right side of the wady; see BOZEZ. Conder gives an excellent description of the place in Tent Work in Palestine, II, 112-14.

W.
