It appears in both literal and metaphorical senses throughout the Scriptures.

1. Literal Cutting: In the Old Testament, "cut" is frequently used in the context of physical cutting or dividing. For example, in Genesis 15:10, Abram "cut" the animals in two as part of a covenant ceremony with God: "So Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them down the middle, and laid the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half" . This act of cutting was a traditional way to formalize a covenant, symbolizing the seriousness and binding nature of the agreement.

2. Circumcision: One of the most significant uses of "cut" is in the context of circumcision, a physical act that held deep spiritual significance for the Israelites. Genesis 17:10-11 states, "This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you, which you are to keep: Every male among you must be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between Me and you" . Here, the cutting away of the foreskin was a sign of the covenant between God and His people, marking them as set apart for Him.

3. Metaphorical and Spiritual Cutting: The Bible also uses "cut" metaphorically to describe spiritual truths. In John 15:2, Jesus speaks of the necessity of pruning in the life of a believer: "He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful" . This cutting is a process of spiritual growth and purification, where God removes what is unproductive or harmful to foster greater fruitfulness.

4. Judgment and Separation: "Cut" is often associated with divine judgment and separation from God. In Matthew 25:32, Jesus describes the final judgment: "All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats" . The act of cutting or separating here signifies the ultimate division between the righteous and the unrighteous.

5. Prophetic and Eschatological Contexts: In prophetic literature, "cut" can denote the end of a period or the destruction of nations. Daniel 9:26 speaks of the Messiah being "cut off": "After the sixty-two weeks, the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing" . This prophecy is understood to refer to the crucifixion of Christ, where He was "cut off" from the living, fulfilling His redemptive mission.

6. Warnings and Exhortations: The New Testament contains warnings about being "cut off" from the community of believers due to sin or false teaching. In Romans 11:22, Paul warns the Gentiles: "Consider therefore the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in His kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off" . This serves as an exhortation to remain faithful and obedient to God's covenant.

In summary, the concept of "cut" in the Bible encompasses a range of meanings from physical acts to profound spiritual truths, often highlighting themes of covenant, purification, judgment, and separation.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
