And such a very<MG4183> large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793> gathered<MG4863> to Him that He got<MG1684> into a boat<MG4143> on the sea<MG2281> and sat<MG2521> down<MG2521>; and the whole<MG3956> crowd<MG3793> was by the sea<MG2281> on the land<MG1093>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>And He was teaching<MG1321> them many<MG4183> things<MG4183> in parables<MG3850b>, and was saying<MG3004> to them in His teaching<MG1322>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>“Listen<MG191> <i>to this!</i> Behold<MG2400>, the sower<MG4687> went<MG1831> out<MG1831> to sow<MG4687>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>as he was sowing<MG4687>, some<MG3739, 3303a> <i>seed</i> fell<MG4098> beside<MG3844> the road<MG3598>, and the birds<MG4071> came<MG2064> and ate<MG2719> it up<MG2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Other<MG243> <i>seed</i> fell<MG4098> on the rocky<MG4075> <i>ground</i> where<MG3699> it did not have<MG2192> much<MG4183> soil<MG1093>; and immediately<MG2117> it sprang<MG1816> up<MG1816> because<MG1223> it had<MG2192> no<MG3361> depth<MG899> of soil<MG1093>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And when<MG3753> the sun<MG2246> had risen<MG393>, it was scorched<MG2739>; and because<MG1223> it had<MG2192> no<MG3361> root<MG4491>, it withered<MG3583> away<MG3583>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Other<MG243> <i>seed</i> fell<MG4098> among<MG1519> the thorns<MG173>, and the thorns<MG173> came<MG305> up<MG305> and choked<MG4846> it, and it yielded<MG1325> no<MG3756> crop<MG2590>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Other<MG243> <i>seeds</i> fell<MG4098> into the good<MG2570> soil<MG1093>, and as they grew<MG305> up<MG305> and increased<MG837>, they yielded<MG1325> a crop<MG2590> and produced<MG5342> thirty<MG5144b>, sixty<MG1835>, and a hundred<MG1540> <i>times as much.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004>, “He who<MG3739> has<MG2192> ears<MG3775> to hear<MG191>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>let him hear<MG191>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>As soon<MG3753> as He was alone<MG3441>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>His followers<MG3588, 4012>, along<MG4862> with the twelve<MG1427> <i>disciples, began</i> asking<MG2065> Him <i>about</i> the parables<MG3850b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004> to them, “To you has been given<MG1325> the mystery<MG3466> of the kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316>, but for those<MG1565> who are outside<MG1854>, everything<MG3956> comes<MG1096> in parables<MG3850b>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>so<MG2443> that<MG2443> WHILE SEEING<MG991> THEY MAY SEE<MG991>, AND NOT PERCEIVE<MG3708>, AND WHILE HEARING<MG191>, THEY MAY HEAR<MG191>, AND NOT UNDERSTAND<MG4920>, OTHERWISE<MG3379> THEY MIGHT RETURN<MG1994> AND IT WOULD BE FORGIVEN<MG863> THEM.” <p class="hdg">Explanation of the Parable</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And He *said<MG3004> to them, “Do you not understand<MG3609a> this<MG3778> parable<MG3850b>? How<MG4459> will you understand<MG1097> all<MG3956> the parables<MG3850b>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>The sower<MG4687> sows<MG4687> the word<MG3056>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>These<MG3778> are the ones who<MG3588> are beside<MG3844> the road<MG3598> where<MG3699> the word<MG3056> is sown<MG4687>; and when<MG3752> they hear<MG191>, immediately<MG2117> Satan<MG4567> comes<MG2064> and takes<MG142> away<MG142> the word<MG3056> which has been sown<MG4687> in them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And in a similar<MG3668> way<MG3668> these<MG3778> are the ones sown<MG4687> <i>with seed</i> on the rocky<MG4075> <i>places,</i> who<MG3739>, when<MG3752> they hear<MG191> the word<MG3056>, immediately<MG2117> receive<MG2983> it with joy<MG5479>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>and <i>yet</i> they have<MG2192> no<MG3756> <i>firm</i> root<MG4491> in themselves<MG1438>, but are <i>only</i> temporary<MG4340>; then<MG1534>, when affliction<MG2347> or<MG2228> persecution<MG1375> occurs<MG1096> because<MG1223> of the word<MG3056>, immediately<MG2117> they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>fall<MG4624> away<MG4624>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And others<MG243> are the ones sown<MG4687> <i>with seed</i> among<MG1519> the thorns<MG173>; these<MG3778> are the ones who have heard<MG191> the word<MG3056>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>but the worries<MG3308> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>world<MG165>, and the deceitfulness<MG539> of wealth<MG4149>, and the desires<MG1939> for other<MG3062> things<MG3062> enter<MG1531> and choke<MG4846> the word<MG3056>, and it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>becomes<MG1096> unfruitful<MG175>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And those<MG1565> are the ones sown<MG4687> <i>with seed</i> on the good<MG2570> soil<MG1093>; and they hear<MG191> the word<MG3056> and accept<MG3858> <i>it</i> and bear<MG2592> fruit<MG2592>, thirty<MG5144b>, sixty<MG1835>, and a hundred<MG1540> <i>times as much.</i>” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004> to them, “A lamp<MG3088> is not brought<MG2064> to be put<MG5087> under<MG5259> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>basket<MG3426>, or<MG2228> under<MG5259> a bed<MG2825b>, is it? Is it not <i>brought</i> to be put<MG5087> on the lampstand<MG3087>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>For nothing<MG3756, 5100> is hidden<MG2927>, except<MG1437, 3361> to be revealed<MG5319>; nor<MG3761> has <i>anything</i> been<MG1096> secret<MG614>, but that it would come<MG2064> to light<MG5318>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>If<MG1487> anyone<MG5100> has<MG2192> ears<MG3775> to hear<MG191>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>let him hear<MG191>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004> to them, “Take<MG991> care<MG991> what<MG5101> you listen<MG191> to. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>By your standard<MG3358> of measure<MG3354> it will be measured<MG3354> to you; and <i>more</i> will be given<MG4369> you besides<MG4369>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>For whoever<MG3739> has<MG2192>, to him <i>more</i> will be given<MG1325>; and whoever<MG3739> does not have<MG2192>, even<MG2532> what<MG3739> he has<MG2192> will be taken<MG142> away<MG142> from him.” <p class="hdg">Parable of the Seed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004>, “The kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316> is like<MG3779, 5613> a man<MG444> who casts<MG906> seed<MG4703> upon the soil<MG1093>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>and he goes<MG2518> to<MG2518> bed<MG2518> at night<MG3571> and gets<MG1453> up<MG1453> daily<MG2250>, and the seed<MG4703> sprouts<MG985> and grows<MG3373>—how<MG5613>, he himself<MG846> does not know<MG3609a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>The soil<MG1093> produces<MG2592> crops<MG2592> by<MG844> itself<MG844>; first<MG4413> the stalk<MG5528>, then<MG1535b> the head<MG4719>, then<MG1535b> the mature<MG4134> grain<MG4621> in the head<MG4719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when<MG3752> the crop<MG2590> permits<MG3860>, he immediately<MG2117> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>puts<MG649> in<MG649> the sickle<MG1407>, because<MG3754> the harvest<MG2326> has come<MG3936>.” <p class="hdg">Parable of the Mustard Seed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004>, “How<MG4459> shall we <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>picture<MG3666> the kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316>, or<MG2228> by what<MG5101> parable<MG3850b> shall we present<MG5087> it? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><i>It is</i> like<MG5613> a mustard<MG4615> seed<MG2848>, which<MG3739>, when<MG3752> sown<MG4687> upon the soil<MG1093>, though it is the smallest<MG3398> of all<MG3956> the seeds<MG4690> that are upon the soil<MG1093>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>yet<MG2532> when<MG3752> it is sown<MG4687>, it grows<MG305> up<MG305> and becomes<MG1096> larger<MG3173> than all<MG3956> the garden<MG3001> plants<MG3001>, and forms<MG4160> large<MG3173> branches<MG2798>, with<MG5620> the<MG5620> result<MG5620> that<MG5620> THE BIRDS<MG4071> OF THE SKY<MG3772> can<MG1410> NEST<MG2681> UNDER<MG5259> its shade<MG4639>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And with many<MG4183> such<MG5108> parables<MG3850b> He was speaking<MG2980> the word<MG3056> to them, so<MG2531a> far<MG2531a> as<MG2531a> they were able<MG1410> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>understand<MG191> <i>it;</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>and He did not speak<MG2980> to them without<MG5565> a parable<MG3850b>; but He was explaining<MG1956> everything<MG3956> privately<MG2596, 2398> to His own<MG2398> disciples<MG3101>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Stills the Sea</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>On that day<MG2250>, when evening<MG3798> came<MG1096>, He *said<MG3004> to them, “Let’s go<MG1330> over<MG1330> to the other<MG4008> side<MG4008>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>After dismissing<MG863> the crowd<MG3793>, they *took<MG3880> Him along<MG3880> with them in the boat<MG4143>, just<MG5613> as<MG5613> He was; and other<MG243> boats<MG4143> were with Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And a fierce<MG3173> gale<MG2978> of wind<MG417> *developed<MG1096>, and the waves<MG2949> were breaking<MG1911> over<MG1911> the boat<MG4143> so<MG5620> much that the boat<MG4143> was already<MG2235> filling<MG1072> <i>with water.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And <i>yet Jesus</i> Himself<MG846> was in the stern<MG4403>, asleep<MG2518> on the cushion<MG4344>; and they *woke<MG1453> Him and *said<MG3004> to Him, “Teacher<MG1320>, do You not care<MG3199> that we are perishing<MG622>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And He got<MG1326> up<MG1326> and rebuked<MG2008> the wind<MG417> and said<MG3004> to the sea<MG2281>, “Hush<MG4623>, be still<MG5392>.” And the wind<MG417> died<MG2869> down<MG2869> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>it became<MG1096> perfectly<MG3173> calm<MG1055>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/4-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to them, “Why<MG5101> are you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>afraid<MG1169>?
