In a characteristic act of showmanship, Kejriwal tried to project the failure as the result of a united effort by the Congress and the BJP to scuttle the AAP’s cherished anti-corruption legislation, and not of his government’s attempt to sidestep constitutional procedure by bringing the bill to the floor without the approval of the central government. Each voter class has a different priority, viz, Pro Development, Anti-Corruption, Secular Credentials, Casteist preferences. The upper middle is firmly rooted on Development as the key theme and will find Modi an attractive bet. The urban poor, Rural segment of voters may switch from Congress or any of the regional parties that are demonstrably corrupt, to vote for AAP or vote completely on casteist considerations. The sizeable Middle Class is split right down the middle - and for them, prioritizing which issue takes center stage (Pro Development, Anti-corruption, Secular image) will depend on which direction they will swing. In my own thinking I did not consider the impact of the high-profile races, which is very true. The high profile races will help build a buzz and may eventually make AAP a factor in not only those constituencies but surrounding areas as well. Four points I thought you did not mention, or at least did not highlight to an adequate degree: 1. The AAP has grown mainly by cannibalising the Congress vote share. You highlighted that in the Delhi case, but did not explain how AAP getting 5-15% vote in these other states may actually work in BJP's favour, if these votes come largely from Congress/BSP vote shares. In Delhi AAP managed >25% of the vote which did end up hurting the BJP but in a 10% vote scenario they will maybe end up helping it . 2. The language factor is very important. The AAP's leadership is predominantly Delhi-centric and these people are far more adept at Hindi and Delhi languages such as Punjabi and Haryanvi, which can help explain the reason for its rapid growth. 3. The fact that all the states you highlighted are either bordering or in the close vicinity of the NCR. So AAP is also basically growing in the same cabbage patch method that other regional parties have been trying to, and therefore a focus on such growth might end up hobbling its long term growth prospects, as its leadership becomes a North India one. Marathis, Tamils and Kannadigas might be turned off. BJP also has had problems with the same, and in the early years so did Congress. 4. A more flimsy point for which I have less evidence: If Kejriwal decides to contest against Modi in UP, that will have a considerable impact. If Modi goes through with contesting from UP, it will help AAP galvanise support throughout Eastern UP. The issues it has and continues to raise, right or wrong, will do Indian democracy and its institutions a great service. Agreed that BJP's vote share was almost the same as earlier, when there was no AAP, but that doesn't necessarily mean that their vote share remained static or unaffected by AAP. From my personal observation as an urban Delhi voter, had there been no AAP this year, BJP would have won a huge, thumping victory in Delhi. I know of several BJP supporters who changed their minds at the last moment and voted for AAP. The support for BJP across India and not just in the urban areas, at least in part, derives its strength from the lack of alternatives and the historically legitimized 'switch' to the other 'available' party whenever the incumbent party seems unbearable.
