Allen Brooks died August 8, 2010.</p> <div class="plain"> <div align="left">We are deepenly saddened to learn of the passing of one of our former faculty members.聽 <br/><br/>H. Allen Brooks, a professor in the Department of Art History for nearly 30 years has died at the age of 84.<br/>He lectured on architecture, and former students still recall the impact of his lectures on Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright.聽 Beyond his important research, he was a remarkable and engaging teacher.<br/><br/>His obituary on the <i>Society of Architectural Historians Listserv</i> appears below:<br/><br/>H. ALLEN BROOKS, 1925-2010<br/><br/>H. Allen Brooks, 84, died August 8, 2010 at Kendal at Hanover, the<br/>continuing-care retirement community in New Hampshire where he had<br/>resided since 2004.<br/><br/>Born November 6, 1925 in New Haven, Connecticut, Allen Brooks was<br/>educated at Dartmouth College (B.A. 1950), Yale University (M.A.<br/>1955), and Northwestern University (Ph.D. 1957).聽 He had a long and<br/>distinguished career as an architectural educator and author,<br/>primarily at the University of Toronto, where he taught from 1958 to<br/>1986.聽 He wrote seminal works on the architecture of Frank Lloyd<br/>Wright and his contemporaries, coining the name "The Prairie School,"<br/>and on the architecture of Le Corbusier.聽 He travelled extensively<br/>and served as a visiting professor at Dartmouth, Vassar, and the<br/>Architectural Association in London.聽 Among his many professional<br/>affiliations, he was a fellow and past president of the Society of<br/>Architectural Historians.<br/><br/>Allen Brooks will be buried in the family plot in Litchfield,<br/>Connecticut.聽 At his request, there will be no funeral, but<br/>contributions may be made in his memory to the Society of<br/>Architectural Historians, 1365 North Astor Street, Chicago, IL 60610.<br/><br/>H.
