but now<MH6258>, lighten<MH7043> the hard<MH7186> labor<MH5656> <i>imposed by</i> your father<MH1> and his heavy<MH3515> yoke<MH5923> which<MH834> he put<MH5414> on us, and we will serve<MH5647> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to them, “Depart<MH1980> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>for three<MH7969> days<MH3117>, then return<MH7725> to me.” So the people<MH5971a> departed<MH1980>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And King<MH4428> Rehoboam<MH7346> consulted<MH3289> with the elders<MH2205> who<MH834> had<MH1961> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>served<MH5975, 6440> his father<MH1> Solomon<MH8010> while he was still alive<MH2416a>, saying<MH559>, “How<MH349> do you advise<MH3289> <i>me</i> to answer<MH7725, 1697> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then they spoke<MH1696> to him, saying<MH559>, “If<MH518> you will be a servant<MH5650> to this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> today<MH3117>, and will serve<MH5647> them and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>grant<MH6030a> them their request<MH6030a>, and speak<MH1696> pleasant<MH2896a> words<MH1697> to them, then they will be your servants<MH5650> always<MH3605, 3117>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But he ignored<MH5800a> the advice<MH6098> of the elders<MH2205> which<MH834> they had given<MH3289> him, and consulted<MH3289> with the young<MH3206> men<MH3206> who<MH834> had grown<MH1431> up<MH1431> with him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>and served<MH5975, 6440> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>He said<MH559> to them, “What<MH4100> advice<MH3289> do you give<MH3289>, so that we may answer<MH7725, 1697> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> who<MH834> have spoken<MH1696> to me, saying<MH559>, ‘Lighten<MH7043> the yoke<MH5923> which<MH834> your father<MH1> put<MH5414> on us’?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the young<MH3206> men<MH3206> who<MH834> had grown<MH1431> up<MH1431> with him spoke<MH1696> to him, saying<MH559>, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you should say<MH559> to this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> who<MH834> spoke<MH1696> to you, saying<MH559>: ‘Your father<MH1> made<MH3513> our yoke<MH5923> heavy<MH3513>, now you make<MH7043> it lighter<MH7043> for us!’ You should speak<MH1696> this<MH3541> way<MH3541> to them: ‘My little<MH6995> finger<MH6995> is thicker<MH5666> than<MH4480> my father’s<MH1> waist<MH4975>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, my father<MH1> loaded<MH6006> you with a heavy<MH3515> yoke<MH5923>; yet I will add<MH3254> to your yoke<MH5923>. My father<MH1> disciplined<MH3256> you with whips<MH7752>, but I will discipline<MH3256> you with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>scorpions<MH6137>!’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then Jeroboam<MH3379> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> came<MH935> to Rehoboam<MH7346> on the third<MH7992> day<MH3117>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> the king<MH4428> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>directed<MH1696>, saying<MH559>, “Return<MH7725> to me on the third<MH7992> day<MH3117>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> answered<MH6030a> the people<MH5971a> harshly<MH7186>, for he ignored<MH5800a> the advice<MH6098> of the elders<MH2205> which<MH834> they had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>given<MH3289> him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and he spoke<MH1696> to them according to the advice<MH6098> of the young<MH3206> men<MH3206>, saying<MH559>, “My father<MH1> made<MH3513> your yoke<MH5923> heavy<MH3513>, but I will add<MH3254> to your yoke<MH5923>; my father<MH1> disciplined<MH3256> you with whips<MH7752>, but I will discipline<MH3256> you with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>scorpions<MH6137>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> did not listen<MH8085> to the people<MH5971a>; because<MH3588> it was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>a turn<MH5438> of<MH5438> events<MH5438> from the LORD<MH3068>, in<MH4616> order<MH4616> to<MH4616> establish<MH6965> His word<MH1697> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> through<MH3027> Ahijah<MH281> the Shilonite<MH7888> to Jeroboam<MH3379> the son<MH1121> of Nebat<MH5028>. <p class="hdg">The Kingdom Divided; Jeroboam Rules Israel</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> <i>saw</i> that the king<MH4428> had not listened<MH8085> to them, the people<MH5971a> replied<MH7725, 1697> to the king<MH4428>, saying<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“What<MH4100> share<MH2506> do we have in David<MH1732>? <t><p class="indent1"><i>We have</i> no<MH3808> inheritance<MH5159> in the son<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448>; <t><p class="indent1">To your tents<MH168>, Israel<MH3478>! <t><p class="indent1">Now<MH6258> look<MH7200> after your own house<MH1004>, David<MH1732>!” <p class="R">So Israel<MH3478> went<MH1980> <i>away</i> to their tents<MH168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But as for the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> who lived<MH3427> in the cities<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063>, Rehoboam<MH7346> reigned<MH4427a> over<MH5921> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> Rehoboam<MH7346> sent<MH7971> Adoram<MH151>, who<MH834> was in<MH5921> charge<MH5921> of<MH5921> the forced<MH4522> labor<MH4522>, and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> stoned<MH7275, 68> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>to death<MH4191>. And King<MH4428> Rehoboam<MH7346> hurried<MH553> to mount<MH5927> his chariot<MH4818> to flee<MH5127> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So Israel<MH3478> has broken<MH6586> with<MH6586> the house<MH1004> of David<MH1732> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> heard<MH8085> that Jeroboam<MH3379> had returned<MH7725>, that they sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and called<MH7121> him to the assembly<MH5712>, and made<MH4427a> him king<MH4427a> over<MH5921> all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478>. None<MH3808> except<MH2108> the tribe<MH7626> of Judah<MH3063> alone<MH905> followed<MH310> the house<MH1004> of David<MH1732>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now when Rehoboam<MH7346> had come<MH935> to Jerusalem<MH3389>, he assembled<MH6950> all<MH3605> the house<MH1004> of Judah<MH3063> and the tribe<MH7626> of Benjamin<MH1144>, 180,000<MH3967, 8084, 505> chosen<MH977> warriors<MH6213a, 4421>, to fight<MH3898a> against<MH5973> the house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478> to restore<MH7725> the kingdom<MH4410> to Rehoboam<MH7346> the son<MH1121> of Solomon<MH8010>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But the word<MH1697> of God<MH430> came<MH1961> to Shemaiah<MH8098> the man<MH376> of God<MH430>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>“Tell<MH559> Rehoboam<MH7346> the son<MH1121> of Solomon<MH8010>, king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>, and all<MH3605> the house<MH1004> of Judah<MH3063> and Benjamin<MH1144>, and the rest<MH3499a> of the people<MH5971a>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “You shall not go<MH5927> up<MH5927> nor<MH3808> fight<MH3898a> against<MH5973> your relatives<MH251> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>; return<MH7725>, every<MH376> man<MH376> to his house<MH1004>, for this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> has come<MH1961> from Me.”’” So they listened<MH8085> to the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, and returned<MH7725> to go<MH1980> <i>their way</i> in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="hdg">Jeroboam’s Idolatry</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then Jeroboam<MH3379> built<MH1129> Shechem<MH7927> in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Ephraim<MH669>, and lived<MH3427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>there. And he went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from there<MH8033> and built<MH1129> Penuel<MH6439>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And Jeroboam<MH3379> said<MH559> in his heart<MH3820>, “Now<MH6258> the kingdom<MH4467> will return<MH7725> to the house<MH1004> of David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>If<MH518> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>offer<MH6213a> sacrifices<MH2077> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> in Jerusalem<MH3389>, then the heart<MH3820> of this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> will return<MH7725> to their lord<MH113>, to Rehoboam<MH7346> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>; and they will kill<MH2026> me and return<MH7725> to Rehoboam<MH7346> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>consulted<MH3289>, and he made<MH6213a> two<MH8147> golden<MH2091> calves<MH5695>; and he said<MH559> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>the people, “It is too<MH4480> much<MH7227a> for you to go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Jerusalem<MH3389>; behold<MH2009> your gods<MH430>, Israel<MH3478>, that brought<MH5927> you up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And he set<MH7760> up<MH7760> one<MH259> in Bethel<MH1008>, and the other<MH259> he put<MH5414> in Dan<MH1835>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Now this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> became<MH1961> a sin<MH2403b>, for the people<MH5971a> went<MH1980> <i>to worship</i> before<MH6440> the one<MH259> as far<MH5704> as Dan<MH1835>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And he made<MH6213a> houses<MH1004> on high<MH1116> places<MH1116>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>appointed<MH6213a> priests<MH3548> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>all<MH7098> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were not of the sons<MH1121> of Levi<MH3878>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Jeroboam<MH3379> also <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>instituted<MH6213a> a feast<MH2282> in the eighth<MH8066> month<MH2320> on the fifteenth<MH2568, 6240> day<MH3117> of the month<MH2320>, like the feast<MH2282> that is in Judah<MH3063>, and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the altar<MH4196>. So<MH3651> he did<MH6213a> in Bethel<MH1008>, sacrificing<MH2076> to the calves<MH5695> which<MH834> he had made<MH6213a>.
