He was the second surviving son of <a href="/wiki/McMahon-984" title="McMahon-984">William Daniel McMahon</a>, a law clerk or solicitor, and <a href="/wiki/Walder-102" title="Walder-102">Mary Ellen Walder</a>. <sup id="_ref-0" class="reference"><a href="#_note-0" title="">[1]</a></sup> His mother died when he was nine years of age. Billy's maternal uncle, <a href="/wiki/Walder-156" title="Walder-156">Samuel Walder</a>, who was at one time Lord Mayor of Sydney, then raised him. His older brother, <a href="/wiki/McMahon-2366" title="McMahon-2366">James</a>, died in 1919 and his father in 1926. </p><p>Billy was educated at Abbotsholme College and Sydney Grammar School, followed by St Paul's College, University of Sydney from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Law (LLB). He practised as a solicitor with the legal firm Allen, Allen & Hemsley, where (Sir) Norman Cowper influenced his political thinking. He became a partner from 1939 to 1941. </p><p>On 26 April 1940, Billy was commissioned as an officer in the Australian Military Force (Militia). In the October he transferred to the expeditionary Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF), for active service overseas throughout the Second World War. His next-of-kin was listed as <a href="/wiki/McMahon-2364" title="McMahon-2364">Samuel McMahon</a>, his younger brother. As he was classified medically unfit for overseas service because of chronic catarrh that impaired his hearing, utilising his legal experience and knowledge, Billy was employed on staff duties in Australia – as deputy assistant quartermaster general (movements) at Headquarters II Corps (1942-43) and Headquarters 2nd Army (1943-45). He gained promotions to Captain in 1942 and to Major the following year. He was placed on the Reserve of Officers on 10th October 1945, after war's end. <sup id="_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#_note-1" title="">[2]</a></sup><sup id="_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#_note-2" title="">[3]</a></sup> </p><p>After making an extensive tour of Europe to observe the problems created by the Second World War, Billy returned to the University of Sydney and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Economics (BEc). </p><p>William McMahon was elected to federal parliament as the Liberal member the Sydney electorate of Lowe in 1949, which he held for 32 years until January 1982. He never lived in the electorate, however. He served in many portfolios under the governments of <a href="/wiki/Menzies-170" title="Menzies-170">Robert Menzies</a>, <a href="/wiki/Holt-2480" title="Holt-2480">Harold Holt</a> and <a href="/wiki/Gorton-492" title="Gorton-492">John Gorton</a>, including those responsible for Social Services (1954-56), Primary Industry (1956-58), Labour and National Service (1958-66), Navy (1961-64), Treasurer (1966-69) and Foreign Affairs (1969-71). From 1964 to 1966 he was vice-president of the Executive Council. </p><p>Billy married attractive and vivacious <a href="/wiki/Hopkins-4070" title="Hopkins-4070"><b>Sonia Hopkins</b></a>, an occupational therapist and film production assistant, on 11 December 1965 in St Mark’s Church of England (now Anglican Church), Darling Point, in Sydney's affluent inner eastern suburbs. <sup id="_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#_note-3" title="">[4]</a></sup> Billy was then 57 years of age and Sonia 33. He was appointed Privy Councillor (PC) in 1966. With McEwan refusing to support him as Leader in 1967, <a href="/wiki/Gorton-492" title="Gorton-492">Gorton</a> became Leader and Prime Minister following Holt's disappearance until Billy replaced him (after McEwan's retirement) in March 1971. He was named New South Wales Father of the Year in 1971. In the New Year Honours 1972 he was appointed to the Order of the Companion of Honour (CH). <sup id="_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#_note-4" title="">[5]</a></sup> In the December 1972 Federal election, the Liberal Party-Country Party coalition lost government to the Australian Labor Party. In the Queen's Birthday Honours 1977 he was created Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) (1977). <sup id="_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#_note-5" title="">[6]</a></sup> Remaining in parliament until 4 January 1982, Billy was a frequent commentator on economic and political issues, offering advice and criticising both the government and Opposition. </p><p>In retirement he travelled, and worked as a consultant to the Bank of America. </p><p>Sir William passed away on 31 March 1988 in Potts Point and his remains cremated and ashes given to family. <sup id="_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#_note-6" title="">[7]</a></sup><sup id="_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#_note-7" title="">[8]</a></sup> A state memorial service was held on 8 April. He was survived by Sonia, who passed in 2010, and their children.
