Intelligent car headlamps are able to suppress conventional warning vests with retro-reflective stripes as a disturbing light. Illuminated warning vests are therefore required for occupational safety. However, they must not pose any danger to the wearer or other persons. Here, the risks of the batteries (lithium types), the maximum brightness (glare) and possible interference radiation from the electronics on the implant carrier must be taken into account. The all-around visibility, as well as the required range, play an important role here. For the study, many luminance measurements of already commercially available LEDs and electroluminescent warning vests, as well as their electromagnetic interference fields and aspects of electrical safety, were measured. The results of this study showed that LED lighting is all far too bright and causes strong glare. The integrated controls with pulse modulation and switching regulators cause electromagnetic interference fields. Rechargeable lithium batteries can explode depending on the temperature range. Electroluminescence brings even more hazards. A test method was developed for the evaluation of visibility at distances of 50, 100, and 150 m, including the interview of test persons. A measuring method was developed for the detection of glare effects at close range with the assignment of the maximum permissible luminance. The electromagnetic interference fields were tested in the time and frequency ranges. A risk and hazard analysis were prepared for the use of lithium batteries. The range of values for luminance and risk analysis for lithium batteries were discussed in the standards working group. These will be integrated into the standard. This paper gives a brief overview of the topics of illuminated warning vests, which takes into account the risks and hazards for the vest wearer or others <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=illuminated%20warning%20vest" title="illuminated warning vest">illuminated warning vest</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20tests%20and%20measurements" title=" optical tests and measurements"> optical tests and measurements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=risks" title=" risks"> risks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hazards" title=" hazards"> hazards</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20glare%20effects" title=" optical glare effects"> optical glare effects</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LED" title=" LED"> LED</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=E-light" title=" E-light"> E-light</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electric%20luminescent" title=" electric luminescent"> electric luminescent</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109108/a-led-warning-vest-as-safety-smart-textile-and-active-cooperation-in-a-working-group-for-building-a-normative-standard" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109108.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">113</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">314</span> Measurements for Risk Analysis and Detecting Hazards by Active Wearables </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Werner%20Grommes">Werner Grommes</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Intelligent wearables (illuminated vests or hand and foot-bands, smart watches with a laser diode, Bluetooth smart glasses) overflow the market today. They are integrated with complex electronics and are worn very close to the body. Optical measurements and limitation of the maximum light density are needed. Smart watches are equipped with a laser diode or control different body currents. Special glasses generate readable text information that is received via radio transmission. Small high-performance batteries (lithium-ion/polymer) supply the electronics. All these products have been tested and evaluated for risk. These products must, for example, meet the requirements for electromagnetic compatibility as well as the requirements for electromagnetic fields affecting humans or implant wearers. Extensive analyses and measurements were carried out for this purpose. Many users are not aware of these risks. The result of this study should serve as a suggestion to do it better in the future or simply to point out these risks. Commercial LED warning vests, LED hand and foot-bands, illuminated surfaces with inverter (high voltage), flashlights, smart watches, and Bluetooth smart glasses were checked for risks. The luminance, the electromagnetic emissions in the low-frequency as well as in the high-frequency range, audible noises, and nervous flashing frequencies were checked by measurements and analyzed. Rechargeable lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries can burn or explode under special conditions like overheating, overcharging, deep discharge or using out of the temperature specification. Some risk analysis becomes necessary. The result of this study is that many smart wearables are worn very close to the body, and an extensive risk analysis becomes necessary. Wearers of active implants like a pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator must be considered. If the wearable electronics include switching regulators or inverter circuits, active medical implants in the near field can be disturbed. A risk analysis is necessary. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=safety%20and%20hazards" title="safety and hazards">safety and hazards</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electrical%20safety" title=" electrical safety"> electrical safety</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EMC" title=" EMC"> EMC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EMF" title=" EMF"> EMF</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=active%20medical%20implants" title=" active medical implants"> active medical implants</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20radiation" title=" optical radiation"> optical radiation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=illuminated%20warning%20vest" title=" illuminated warning vest"> illuminated warning vest</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electric%20luminescent" title=" electric luminescent"> electric luminescent</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hand%20and%20head%20lamps" title=" hand and head lamps"> hand and head lamps</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LED" title=" LED"> LED</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-light" title=" e-light"> e-light</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=safety%20batteries" title=" safety batteries"> safety batteries</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=light%20density" title=" light density"> light density</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20glare%20effects" title=" optical glare effects"> optical glare effects</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109112/measurements-for-risk-analysis-and-detecting-hazards-by-active-wearables" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109112.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">110</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">313</span> The Power of Local People in Sustainable Tourism Management: A Case Study of Community Participation on Illuminated Boat Procession in Thailand</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Prompassorn%20Chunhabunyatip">Prompassorn Chunhabunyatip</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The objectives of this research were to study the factors affecting the participation of local people and the obstacles and recommendations towards local people’s participation in illuminated boat procession culture. The study looked at both qualitative, and quantitative data were collected by in-depth interview and analyzed by the descriptive approach. The 296 samplings were a local community who participated in constructing the illuminated boat in each community for 14 communities. The results of this study showed that the factor that encourages local people’s participation in illuminated both procession is the awareness of an importance of cultural uniqueness in the local. The problems and obstacles to the participation in illuminated boat procession include the resources for constructing illuminated both such as bamboos are run out of and price increasing, lack of proper cooperation between local people and government officers and conflict in interests between in local government office. So, the result of this study recommended that the government officers should be taken into account about community participation in the illuminated boat procession culture because without local people, the uniqueness culture of Nakhon Phanom Province would not exist and they would not reach the sustainable tourism goal. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=illuminated%20both%20culture" title="illuminated both culture">illuminated both culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=community%20participation" title=" community participation"> community participation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sustainable%20tourism%20management" title=" sustainable tourism management"> sustainable tourism management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nakhon%20Phanom%20province" title=" Nakhon Phanom province"> Nakhon Phanom province</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54351/the-power-of-local-people-in-sustainable-tourism-management-a-case-study-of-community-participation-on-illuminated-boat-procession-in-thailand" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54351.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">359</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">312</span> Collaborative Early Warning System: An Integrated Framework for Mitigating Impacts of Natural Hazards in the UAE</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdulla%20Al%20Hmoudi">Abdulla Al Hmoudi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The impacts and costs of natural disasters on people, properties and the environment is often severe when they occur on a large scale or when not prepared for. Factors such as impacts of climate change, urban growth, poor planning to mention a few, have continued to significantly increase the frequencies and aggravate the impacts of natural hazards across the world; the United Arab Emirates (UAE) inclusive. The lack of deployment of an early warning system, low risk and hazard knowledge and impact of natural hazard experienced in some communities in the UAE have emphasised the need for more effective early warning systems. This paper focuses on the collaborative approach taken to instituting and implementing an early warning system. Using mixed methods 888 people completed the questionnaire and eight people were interviewed in Abu Dhabi. The results indicate that the collaborative approach to early warning system is UAE is needed, but lacks essential principles of the early warning system and currently underutilised. It is recommended that the collaborative early warning system is applied at every stage of the early warning system with the specific responsibility of each stakeholder and actor. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=community" title="community">community</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20warning%20system" title=" early warning system"> early warning system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emergency%20management" title=" emergency management"> emergency management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UAE" title=" UAE"> UAE</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/105105/collaborative-early-warning-system-an-integrated-framework-for-mitigating-impacts-of-natural-hazards-in-the-uae" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/105105.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">144</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">311</span> Prototype Development of Knitted Buoyant Swimming Vest for Children</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nga-Wun%20Li">Nga-Wun Li</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chu-Po%20Ho"> Chu-Po Ho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kit-Lun%20Yick"> Kit-Lun Yick</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jin-Yun%20Zhou"> Jin-Yun Zhou</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of buoyant vests incorporated with swimsuits can develop children’s confidence in the water, particularly for novice swimmers. Consequently, parents intend to purchase buoyant swimming vests for the children to reduce their anxiety to water. Although the conventional buoyant swimming vests can provide the buoyant function to the wearer, their bulkiness and hardness make children feel uncomfortable and not willing to wear. This study aimed to apply inlay knitting technology to design new functional buoyant swimming vests for children. This prototype involved a shell and a buoyant knitted layer, which is the main media to provide buoyancy. Polypropylene yarn and 6.4 mm of Expandable Polyethylene (EPE) foam were fabricated in Full needle stitch with inlay knitting technology and were then linked by sewing to form the buoyant layer. The shell of the knitted buoyant vest was made of Polypropylene circular knitted fabric. The structure of knitted fabrics of the buoyant swimsuit makes them inherently stretchable, and the arrangement of the inlaid material was designed based on the body movement that can improve the ease with which the swimmer moves. Further, the shoulder seam is designed at the back to minimize the irritation of the wearer. Apart from maintaining the buoyant function to them, this prototype shows its contribution in reducing bulkiness and improving softness to the conventional buoyant swimming vest by taking the advantages of a knitted garment. The results in this study are significant to the development of the buoyant swimming vest for both the textile and the fast-growing sportswear industry. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=knitting%20technology" title="knitting technology">knitting technology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=buoyancy" title=" buoyancy"> buoyancy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inlay" title=" inlay"> inlay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swimming%20vest" title=" swimming vest"> swimming vest</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=functional%20garment" title=" functional garment"> functional garment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/117992/prototype-development-of-knitted-buoyant-swimming-vest-for-children" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/117992.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">112</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">310</span> DNA and DNA-Complexes Modified with Electromagnetic Radiation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ewelina%20Nowak">Ewelina Nowak</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna%20Wisla-Swider"> Anna Wisla-Swider</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Krzysztof%20Danel"> Krzysztof Danel</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Aqueous suspensions of DNA were illuminated with linearly polarized visible light and ultraviolet for 5, 15, 20 and 40 h. It is possible to find a link between early warning, respectively early problems detection and risk management. The idea of early warning is very important in the context of crisis management because of the risk prevention possibility. Weak signals are likened to risk symptoms. Nowadays, their usefulness as a tool of proactive problems solving is emphasized. Based on it, it is possible to use weak signals not only in strategic planning, project management, or early warning system, but also as a subsidiary element in risk management. The main question is how to effectively integrate weak signals into risk management. The main aim of the paper is to point out the possibilities of weak signals using in small and medium enterprises risk management. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20warning%20system" title="early warning system">early warning system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=weak%20signals" title=" weak signals"> weak signals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=risk%20management" title=" risk management"> risk management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=small%20and%20medium%20enterprises%20%28SMEs%29" title=" small and medium enterprises (SMEs)"> small and medium enterprises (SMEs)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59504/early-warning-signals-role-and-status-of-risk-management-in-small-and-medium-enterprises" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59504.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">427</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">308</span> Automated Natural Hazard Zonation System with Internet-SMS Warning: Distributed GIS for Sustainable Societies Creating Schema and Interface for Mapping and Communication</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Devanjan%20Bhattacharya">Devanjan Bhattacharya</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jitka%20Komarkova"> Jitka Komarkova</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The research describes the implementation of a novel and stand-alone system for dynamic hazard warning. The system uses all existing infrastructure already in place like mobile networks, a laptop/PC and the small installation software. The geospatial dataset are the maps of a region which are again frugal. Hence there is no need to invest and it reaches everyone with a mobile. A novel architecture of hazard assessment and warning introduced where major technologies in ICT interfaced to give a unique WebGIS based dynamic real time geohazard warning communication system. A never before architecture introduced for integrating WebGIS with telecommunication technology. Existing technologies interfaced in a novel architectural design to address a neglected domain in a way never done before–through dynamically updatable WebGIS based warning communication. The work publishes new architecture and novelty in addressing hazard warning techniques in sustainable way and user friendly manner. Coupling of hazard zonation and hazard warning procedures into a single system has been shown. Generalized architecture for deciphering a range of geo-hazards has been developed. Hence the developmental work presented here can be summarized as the development of internet-SMS based automated geo-hazard warning communication system; integrating a warning communication system with a hazard evaluation system; interfacing different open-source technologies towards design and development of a warning system; modularization of different technologies towards development of a warning communication system; automated data creation, transformation and dissemination over different interfaces. The architecture of the developed warning system has been functionally automated as well as generalized enough that can be used for any hazard and setup requirement has been kept to a minimum. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geospatial" title="geospatial">geospatial</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=web-based%20GIS" title=" web-based GIS"> web-based GIS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geohazard" title=" geohazard"> geohazard</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=warning%20system" title=" warning system"> warning system</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5232/automated-natural-hazard-zonation-system-with-internet-sms-warning-distributed-gis-for-sustainable-societies-creating-schema-and-interface-for-mapping-and-communication" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5232.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">408</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">307</span> Decision Support System for a Pilot Flash Flood Early Warning System in Central Chile</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=D.%20Pinto">D. One way to deal with this constant menace is the use of Early Warning Systems, which have become a very important mitigation strategy for natural disasters. In this work, we present our proposal for a pilot Flash Flood Early Warning System for Santiago, Chile, the first stage of a more ambitious project that in a future stage shall also include early warning of landslides. To give a context for our approach, we first analyze three existing Flash Flood Early Warning Systems, focusing on their general architectures. We then present our proposed system, with main focus on the decision support system, a system that integrates empirical models and fuzzy expert systems to achieve reliable risk estimations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=decision%20support%20systems" title="decision support systems">decision support systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20warning%20systems" title=" early warning systems"> early warning systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flash%20flood" title=" flash flood"> flash flood</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=natural%20hazard" title=" natural hazard"> natural hazard</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26122/decision-support-system-for-a-pilot-flash-flood-early-warning-system-in-central-chile" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26122.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">373</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">306</span> Collective Intelligence-Based Early Warning Management for Agriculture</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jarbas%20Lopes%20Cardoso%20Jr.">Jarbas Lopes Cardoso Jr.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Frederic%20Andres"> Frederic Andres</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandre%20Guitton"> Alexandre Guitton</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asanee%20Kawtrakul"> Asanee Kawtrakul</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvio%20E.%20Barbin"> Silvio E. For example, early detection of insects will reduce the volume of insecticides that is applied to the rice fields through the use of CBMa4 platform. In order to reach this goal, two major factors need to be considered: (1) the social network of smart farmers; and (2) the warning data alarm acquisition and analysis component. This paper outlines the process for collecting the warning and improving the decision-making result to the warning. It involves two sub-processes: the warning collection and the understanding enrichment. Human sensors combine basic suitable data processing techniques in order to extract warning related semantic according to collective intelligence. We identify each warning by a semantic content called 'warncons' with multimedia metaphors and metadata related to these metaphors. It is important to describe the metric to measuring the relation among warncons. With this knowledge, a collective intelligence-based decision-making approach determines the action(s) to be launched regarding one or a set of warncons. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agricultural%20engineering" title="agricultural engineering">agricultural engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=warning%20systems" title=" warning systems"> warning systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20network%20services" title=" social network services"> social network services</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=context%20awareness" title=" context awareness"> context awareness</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25033/collective-intelligence-based-early-warning-management-for-agriculture" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25033.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">382</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">305</span> Dependence of Photocurrent on UV Wavelength in ZnO/Pt Bottom-Contact Schottky Diode</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Byoungho%20Lee">Byoungho Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Changmin%20Kim"> Changmin Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Youngmin%20Lee"> Youngmin Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sejoon%20Lee"> Sejoon Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Deuk%20Young%20Kim"> Deuk Young Kim</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We fabricated the bottom-contacted ZnO/Pt Schottky diode and investigated the dependence of its photocurrent on the wavelength of illuminated ultraviolet (UV) light source. This technology provides immediate update on the score and clinical decision to be taken based on the outcome. This paper aims to study the use of an automated early warning score system on whether the technology has assisted the hospital in early detection and escalation of clinical condition and improve patient outcome. The hospital adopted the Modified Early Warning Scores (MEWS) Scoring System and MEWS Clinical Response into Philips IntelliVue Guardian Automated Early Warning Score equipment and studied whether the process has been leaned, whether the use of technology improved the usage & experience of the nurses, and whether the technology has improved patient care and outcome. It was found the steps required to obtain vital signs has been significantly reduced and is used more frequently to obtain patient vital signs. The number of deaths, and length of stay has significantly decreased as clinical decisions can be made and escalated more quickly with the Automated EWS. The automated early warning score equipment has helped improve work efficiency by removing the need for documenting into patient’s EMR. The technology streamlines clinical decision-making and allows faster care and intervention to be carried out and improves overall patient outcome which translates to better care for patient. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=automated%20early%20warning%20score" title="automated early warning score">automated early warning score</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clinical%20quality%20and%20safety" title=" clinical quality and safety"> clinical quality and safety</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=patient%20safety" title=" patient safety"> patient safety</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medical%20technology" title=" medical technology"> medical technology</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148109/contribution-of-automated-early-warning-score-usage-to-patient-safety" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148109.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">178</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">303</span> Training of Sensors for Early Warning System of Rainfall Induced Landslides</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20Naresh">M. In this study, news data is consumed for prediction of whether there will be a market-wide crisis by predicting the movement of the fear index, and the historical references to similar events are presented in an unsupervised manner. Such systems are crucial to inform the authorities of any risk of a tsunami and of the degree of its danger in order to make the right decision and notify the public of the actions they need to take to save their lives. The purpose of this research is to enhance existing tsunami detection and warning systems. We first propose an automated and miniaturized model of an early tsunami detection and warning system. The model for the operation of a tsunami warning system is simulated using the data acquisition toolbox of Matlab and measurements acquired from specified internet pages due to the lack of the required real-life sensors, both seismic and hydrologic, and building a graphical user interface for the system. In the second phase of this work, we implement various satellite image filtering schemes to enhance the acquired synthetic aperture radar images of the tsunami affected region that are masked by speckle noise. This enables us to conduct a post-tsunami damage extent study and calculate the percentage damage. We conclude by proposing improvements to the existing telecommunication infrastructure of existing warning tsunami systems using a migration to IP-based networks and fiber optics links. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=detection" title="detection">detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GIS" title=" GIS"> GIS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GSN" title=" GSN"> GSN</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GTS" title=" GTS"> GTS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GPS" title=" GPS"> GPS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=speckle%20noise" title=" speckle noise"> speckle noise</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=synthetic%20aperture%20radar" title=" synthetic aperture radar"> synthetic aperture radar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tsunami" title=" tsunami"> tsunami</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wiener%20filter" title=" wiener filter"> wiener filter</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12662/an-enhanced-sar-based-tsunami-detection-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12662.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">392</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">300</span> Early-Warning Lights Classification Management System for Industrial Parks in Taiwan</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yu-Min%20Chang">Yu-Min Chang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kuo-Sheng%20Tsai"> Kuo-Sheng Tsai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hung-Te%20Tsai"> Hung-Te Tsai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chia-Hsin%20Li"> Chia-Hsin Li</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents the early-warning lights classification management system for industrial parks promoted by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) since 2011, including the definition of each early-warning light, objectives, action program and accomplishments. All of the 151 industrial parks in Taiwan were classified into four early-warning lights, including red, orange, yellow and green, for carrying out respective pollution management according to the monitoring data of soil and groundwater quality, regulatory compliance, and regulatory listing of control site or remediation site. The Taiwan EPA set up a priority list for high potential polluted industrial parks and investigated their soil and groundwater qualities based on the results of the light classification and pollution potential assessment. In 2011-2013, there were 44 industrial parks selected and carried out different investigation, such as the early warning groundwater well networks establishment and pollution investigation/verification for the red and orange-light industrial parks and the environmental background survey for the yellow-light industrial parks. Among them, 22 industrial parks were newly or continuously confirmed that the concentrations of pollutants exceeded those in soil or groundwater pollution control standards. Thus, the further investigation, groundwater use restriction, listing of pollution control site or remediation site, and pollutant isolation measures were implemented by the local environmental protection and industry competent authorities; the early warning lights of those industrial parks were proposed to adjust up to orange or red-light. Up to the present, the preliminary positive effect of the soil and groundwater quality management system for industrial parks has been noticed in several aspects, such as environmental background information collection, early warning of pollution risk, pollution investigation and control, information integration and application, and inter-agency collaboration. Finally, the work and goal of self-initiated quality management of industrial parks will be carried out on the basis of the inter-agency collaboration by the classified lights system of early warning and management as well as the regular announcement of the status of each industrial park. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industrial%20park" title="industrial park">industrial park</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20and%20groundwater%20quality%20management" title=" soil and groundwater quality management"> soil and groundwater quality management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early-warning%20lights%20classification" title=" early-warning lights classification"> early-warning lights classification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SOP%20for%20reporting%20and%20treatment%20of%20monitored%20abnormal%20events" title=" SOP for reporting and treatment of monitored abnormal events"> SOP for reporting and treatment of monitored abnormal events</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/14144/early-warning-lights-classification-management-system-for-industrial-parks-in-taiwan" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/14144.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">326</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">299</span> A-Score, Distress Prediction Model with Earning Response during the Financial Crisis: Evidence from Emerging Market</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sumaira%20Ashraf">Sumaira Ashraf</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elisabete%20G.S.%20F%C3%A9lix"> Elisabete G.S. Previous studies particularly focused on the predictability of financial distress, financial failure, and bankruptcy of firms. This paper contributes to the literature by extending the definition of financial distress with the inclusion of early warning signs related to quotation of face value, dividend/bonus declaration, annual general meeting, and listing fee. The study used five well-known distress prediction models to see if they have the ability to predict early warning signs of financial distress. Results showed that the predictive ability of the models varies over time and decreases specifically for the sample with early warning signs of financial distress. Furthermore, the study checked the differences in the predictive ability of the models with respect to the financial crisis. The results conclude that the predictive ability of the traditional financial distress prediction models decreases for the firms with early warning signs of financial distress and during the time of financial crisis. The study developed a new model comprising significant variables from the five models and one new variable earning response. This new model outperforms the old distress prediction models before, during and after the financial crisis. Thus, it can be used by researchers, organizations and all other concerned parties to indicate early warning signs for the emerging markets. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=financial%20distress" title="financial distress">financial distress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emerging%20market" title=" emerging market"> emerging market</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prediction%20models" title=" prediction models"> prediction models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Z-Score" title=" Z-Score"> Z-Score</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=logit%20analysis" title=" logit analysis"> logit analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=probit%20model" title=" probit model"> probit model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/81316/a-score-distress-prediction-model-with-earning-response-during-the-financial-crisis-evidence-from-emerging-market" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/81316.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">243</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">298</span> Failure to React Positively to Flood Early Warning Systems: Lessons Learned by Flood Victims from Flash Flood Disasters: the Malaysia Experience</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohamad%20Sukeri%20Khalid">Mohamad Sukeri Khalid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Che%20Su%20Mustaffa"> Che Su Mustaffa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohd%20Najib%20Marzuki"> Mohd Najib Marzuki</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohd%20Fo%E2%80%99ad%20Sakdan"> Mohd Fo’ad Sakdan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sapora%20Sipon"> Sapora Sipon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohd%20Taib%20Ariffin"> Mohd Taib Ariffin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shazwani%20Shafiai"> Shazwani Shafiai</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper describes the issues relating to the role of the flash flood early warning system provided by the Malaysian Government to the communities in Malaysia, specifically during the flash flood disaster in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Normally, flash flood disasters can occur as a result of heavy rainfall in an area, and that water may possibly cause flooding via streams or narrow channels. For this study, the flash flood disaster in the Cameron Highlands occurred on 23 October 2013, and as a result the Sungai Bertam overflowed after the release of water from the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam. This release of water from the dam caused flash flooding which led to damage to properties and also the death of residents and livestock in the area. Therefore, the effort of this study is to identify the perceptions of the flash flood victims on the role of the flash flood early warning system. For the purposes of this study, data collection was gathered from those flood victims who were willing to participate in this study through face-to-face interviews. This approach helped the researcher to glean in-depth information about their feeling and perceptions on the role of the flash flood early warning system offered by the government. The data were analysed descriptively and the findings show that the respondents of 22 flood victims believe strongly that the flash flood early warning system was confusing and dysfunctional, and communities had failed to response positively to it. Therefore, most of the communities were not well prepared for the releasing of water from the dam that caused property damage and 3 people were killed in Cameron Highland flash flood disaster. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communities%20affected" title="communities affected">communities affected</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=disaster%20management" title=" disaster management"> disaster management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20warning%20system" title=" early warning system"> early warning system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flash%20flood%20disaster" title=" flash flood disaster "> flash flood disaster </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20720/failure-to-react-positively-to-flood-early-warning-systems-lessons-learned-by-flood-victims-from-flash-flood-disasters-the-malaysia-experience" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20720.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">706</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">297</span> Spatially Distributed Rainfall Prediction Based on Automated Kriging for Landslide Early Warning Systems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ekrem%20Canli">Ekrem Canli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Glade"> Thomas Glade</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The precise prediction of rainfall in space and time is a key element to most landslide early warning systems. Unfortunately, the spatial variability of rainfall in many early warning applications is often disregarded. A common simplification is to use uniformly distributed rainfall to characterize aerial rainfall intensity. With spatially differentiated rainfall information, real-time comparison with rainfall thresholds or the implementation in process-based approaches might form the basis for improved landslide warnings. This study suggests an automated workflow from the hourly, web-based collection of rain gauge data to the generation of spatially differentiated rainfall predictions based on kriging. Because the application of kriging is usually a labor intensive task, a simplified and consequently automated variogram modeling procedure was applied to up-to-date rainfall data. The entire workflow was carried out purely with open source technology. Validation results, albeit promising, pointed out the challenges that are involved in pure distance based, automated geostatistical interpolation techniques for ever-changing environmental phenomena over short temporal and spatial extent. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=kriging" title="kriging">kriging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=landslide%20early%20warning%20system" title=" landslide early warning system"> landslide early warning system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spatial%20rainfall%20prediction" title=" spatial rainfall prediction"> spatial rainfall prediction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=variogram%20modelling" title=" variogram modelling"> variogram modelling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=web%20scraping" title=" web scraping"> web scraping</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60188/spatially-distributed-rainfall-prediction-based-on-automated-kriging-for-landslide-early-warning-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60188.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">280</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">296</span> Establishment of Landslide Warning System Using Surface or Sub-Surface Sensors Data</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Neetu%20Tyagi">Neetu Tyagi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sumit%20Sharma"> Sumit Sharma</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The study illustrates the results of an integrated study done on Tangni landslide located on NH-58 at Chamoli, Uttarakhand. Geological, geo-morphological and geotechnical investigations were carried out to understand the mechanism of landslide and to plan further investigation and monitoring. At any rate, the movements were favored by continuous rainfall water infiltration from the zones where the phyllites/slates and Dolomites outcrop. The site investigations were carried out including the monitoring of landslide movements and of the water level fluctuations due to rainfall give us a better understanding of landslide dynamics that have been causing in time soil instability at Tangni landslide site. The Early Warning System (EWS) installed different types of sensors and all sensors were directly connected to data logger and raw data transfer to the Defence Terrain Research Laboratory (DTRL) server room with the help of File Transfer Protocol (FTP). The slip surfaces were found at depths ranging from 8 to 10 m from Geophysical survey and hence sensors were installed to the depth of 15m at various locations of landslide. Rainfall is the main triggering factor of landslide. In this study, the developed model of unsaturated soil slope stability is carried out. The analysis of sensors data available for one year, indicated the sliding surface of landslide at depth between 6 to 12m with total displacement up to 6cm per year recorded at the body of landslide. The aim of this study is to set the threshold and generate early warning. Local peoples already alert towards landslide, if they have any types of warning system. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20warning%20system" title="early warning system">early warning system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=file%20transfer%20protocol" title=" file transfer protocol"> file transfer protocol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geo-morphological" title=" geo-morphological"> geo-morphological</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geotechnical" title=" geotechnical"> geotechnical</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=landslide" title=" landslide"> landslide</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/99668/establishment-of-landslide-warning-system-using-surface-or-sub-surface-sensors-data" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/99668.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">158</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">295</span> High Performance Liquid Cooling Garment (LCG) Using ThermoCore</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Venkat%20Kamavaram">Venkat Kamavaram</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ravi%20Pare"> Ravi Pare</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Modern warfighters experience extreme environmental conditions in many of their operational and training activities. In temperatures exceeding 95°F, the body’s temperature regulation can no longer cool through convection and radiation. In this case, the only cooling mechanism is evaporation. However, evaporative cooling is often compromised by excessive humidity. Natural cooling mechanisms can be further compromised by clothing and protective gear, which trap hot air and moisture close to the body. Creating an efficient heat extraction apparel system that is also lightweight without hindering dexterity or mobility of personnel working in extreme temperatures is a difficult technical challenge and one that needs to be addressed to increase the probability for the future success of the US military. To address this challenge, Oceanit Laboratories, Inc. has developed and patented a Liquid Cooled Garment (LCG) more effective than any on the market today. Oceanit’s LCG is a form-fitting garment with a network of thermally conductive tubes that extracts body heat and can be worn under all authorized and chemical/biological protective clothing. Oceanit specifically designed and developed ThermoCore®, a thermally conductive polymer, for use in this apparel, optimizing the product for thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, manufacturability, and performance temperatures. Thermal Manikin tests were conducted in accordance with the ASTM test method, ASTM F2371, Standard Test Method for Measuring the Heat Removal Rate of Personal Cooling Systems Using a Sweating Heated Manikin, in an environmental chamber using a 20-zone sweating thermal manikin. Manikin test results have shown that Oceanit’s LCG provides significantly higher heat extraction under the same environmental conditions than the currently fielded Environmental Control Vest (ECV) while at the same time reducing the weight. Oceanit’s LCG vests performed nearly 30% better in extracting body heat while weighing 15% less than the ECV. There are NO cooling garments in the market that provide the same thermal extraction performance, form-factor, and reduced weight as Oceanit’s LCG. The two cooling garments that are commercially available and most commonly used are the Environmental Control Vest (ECV) and the Microclimate Cooling Garment (MCG). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermally%20conductive%20composite" title="thermally conductive composite">thermally conductive composite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tubing" title=" tubing"> tubing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=garment%20design" title=" garment design"> garment design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=form%20fitting%20vest" title=" form fitting vest"> form fitting vest</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermocore" title=" thermocore"> thermocore</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154333/high-performance-liquid-cooling-garment-lcg-using-thermocore" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154333.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">115</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">294</span> Effects of Warning Label on Cigarette Package on Consumer Behavior of Smokers in Batangas City Philippines</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Irene%20H.%20Maralit">Irene H. In this model, we examine whether credit conditions play an important role as a nonlinear propagator of shocks when predicting the likelihood of occurrence of financial stress events for a given future time. This propagation takes the form of a threshold regression in which a regime change occurs if credit conditions cross a critical threshold. Given the new early warning model for financial stress events, we evaluate the performance of this model and currently available alternatives, such as the model from signal extraction approach, and linear regression model. In-sample forecasting results indicate that the three types of models are useful tools for predicting financial stress events while none of them outperforms others across all criteria considered. The out-of-sample forecasting results suggest that the credit-regime switching model performs better than the two others across all criteria and all forecasting horizons considered. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cut-off%20probability" title="cut-off probability">cut-off probability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20warning%20model" title=" early warning model"> early warning model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=financial%20crisis" title=" financial crisis"> financial crisis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=financial%20stress" title=" financial stress"> financial stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regime-switching%20model" title=" regime-switching model"> regime-switching model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=forecasting%20horizons" title=" forecasting horizons "> forecasting horizons </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33040/earlywarning-for-financial-stress-eventsa-credit-regime-switching-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33040.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">435</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">292</span> Feasibility Study on Developing and Enhancing of Flood Forecasting and Warning Systems in Thailand</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sitarrine%20Thongpussawal">Sitarrine Thongpussawal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dasarath%20Jayasuriya"> Dasarath Jayasuriya</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thanaroj%20Woraratprasert"> Thanaroj Woraratprasert</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sakawtree%20Prajamwong"> Sakawtree Prajamwong</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Thailand grapples with recurrent floods causing substantial repercussions on its economy, society, and environment. In 2021, the economic toll of these floods amounted to an estimated 53,282 million baht, primarily impacting the agricultural sector. The existing flood monitoring system in Thailand suffers from inaccuracies and insufficient information, resulting in delayed warnings and ineffective communication to the public. The Office of the National Water Resources (OWNR) is tasked with developing and integrating data and information systems for efficient water resources management, yet faces challenges in monitoring accuracy, forecasting, and timely warnings. This study endeavors to evaluate the viability of enhancing Thailand's Flood Forecasting and Warning (FFW) systems. Additionally, it aims to formulate a comprehensive work package grounded in international best practices to enhance the country's FFW systems. Employing qualitative research methodologies, the study conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with pertinent agencies. Data analysis involved techniques like note-taking and document analysis. The study substantiates the feasibility of developing and enhancing FFW systems in Thailand. Implementation of international best practices can augment the precision of flood forecasting and warning systems, empowering local agencies and residents in high-risk areas to prepare proactively, thereby minimizing the adverse impact of floods on lives and property. This research underscores that Thailand can feasibly advance its FFW systems by adopting international best practices, enhancing accuracy, and improving preparedness. Consequently, the study enriches the theoretical understanding of flood forecasting and warning systems and furnishes valuable recommendations for their enhancement in Thailand. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flooding" title="flooding">flooding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=forecasting" title=" forecasting"> forecasting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=warning" title=" warning"> warning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monitoring" title=" monitoring"> monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication" title=" communication"> communication</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thailand" title=" Thailand"> Thailand</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/173941/feasibility-study-on-developing-and-enhancing-of-flood-forecasting-and-warning-systems-in-thailand" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/173941.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">61</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">291</span> Study on Safety Management of Deep Foundation Pit Construction Site Based on Building Information Modeling</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xuewei%20Li">Xuewei Li</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jingfeng%20Yuan"> Jingfeng Yuan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jianliang%20Zhou"> Jianliang Zhou</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The 21st century has been called the century of human exploitation of underground space. Due to the characteristics of large quantity, tight schedule, low safety reserve and high uncertainty of deep foundation pit engineering, accidents frequently occur in deep foundation pit engineering, causing huge economic losses and casualties. With the successful application of information technology in the construction industry, building information modeling has become a research hotspot in the field of architectural engineering. Therefore, the application of building information modeling (BIM) and other information communication technologies (ICTs) in construction safety management is of great significance to improve the level of safety management. This research summed up the mechanism of the deep foundation pit engineering accident through the fault tree analysis to find the control factors of deep foundation pit engineering safety management, the deficiency existing in the traditional deep foundation pit construction site safety management. According to the accident cause mechanism and the specific process of deep foundation pit construction, the hazard information of deep foundation pit engineering construction site was identified, and the hazard list was obtained, including early warning information. After that, the system framework was constructed by analyzing the early warning information demand and early warning function demand of the safety management system of deep foundation pit. Finally, the safety management system of deep foundation pit construction site based on BIM through combing the database and Web-BIM technology was developed, so as to realize the three functions of real-time positioning of construction site personnel, automatic warning of entering a dangerous area, real-time monitoring of deep foundation pit structure deformation and automatic warning. This study can initially improve the current situation of safety management in the construction site of deep foundation pit. Additionally, the active control before the occurrence of deep foundation pit accidents and the whole process dynamic control in the construction process can be realized so as to prevent and control the occurrence of safety accidents in the construction of deep foundation pit engineering. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Web-BIM" title="Web-BIM">Web-BIM</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=safety%20management" title=" safety management"> safety management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deep%20foundation%20pit" title=" deep foundation pit"> deep foundation pit</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=construction" title=" construction"> construction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109397/study-on-safety-management-of-deep-foundation-pit-construction-site-based-on-building-information-modeling" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109397.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">154</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">290</span> Application of Data Driven Based Models as Early Warning Tools of High Stream Flow Events and Floods</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohammed%20Seyam">Mohammed Seyam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Faridah%20Othman"> Faridah Othman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ahmed%20El-Shafie"> Ahmed El-Shafie</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The early warning of high stream flow events (HSF) and floods is an important aspect in the management of surface water and rivers systems. This process can be performed using either process-based models or data driven-based models such as artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The main goal of this study is to develop efficient AI-based model for predicting the real-time hourly stream flow (Q) and apply it as early warning tool of HSF and floods in the downstream area of the Selangor River basin, taken here as a paradigm of humid tropical rivers in Southeast Asia. The performance of AI-based models has been improved through the integration of the lag time (Lt) estimation in the modelling process. A total of 8753 patterns of Q, water level, and rainfall hourly records representing one-year period (2011) were utilized in the modelling process. Six hydrological scenarios have been arranged through hypothetical cases of input variables to investigate how the changes in RF intensity in upstream stations can lead formation of floods. The initial SF was changed for each scenario in order to include wide range of hydrological situations in this study. The performance evaluation of the developed AI-based model shows that high correlation coefficient (R) between the observed and predicted Q is achieved. The AI-based model has been successfully employed in early warning throughout the advance detection of the hydrological conditions that could lead to formations of floods and HSF, where represented by three levels of severity (i.e., alert, warning, and danger). Based on the results of the scenarios, reaching the danger level in the downstream area required high RF intensity in at least two upstream areas. According to results of applications, it can be concluded that AI-based models are beneficial tools to the local authorities for flood control and awareness. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=floods" title="floods">floods</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stream%20flow" title=" stream flow"> stream flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrological%20modelling" title=" hydrological modelling"> hydrological modelling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrology" title=" hydrology"> hydrology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=artificial%20intelligence" title=" artificial intelligence"> artificial intelligence</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67451/application-of-data-driven-based-models-as-early-warning-tools-of-high-stream-flow-events-and-floods" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67451.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">248</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">289</span> Performance of On-site Earthquake Early Warning Systems for Different Sensor Locations</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ting-Yu%20Hsu">Ting-Yu Hsu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shyu-Yu%20Wu"> Shyu-Yu Wu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shieh-Kung%20Huang"> Shieh-Kung Huang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hung-Wei%20Chiang"> Hung-Wei Chiang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kung-Chun%20Lu"> Kung-Chun Lu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pei-Yang%20Lin"> Pei-Yang Lin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kuo-Liang%20Wen"> Kuo-Liang Wen</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Regional earthquake early warning (EEW) systems are not suitable for Taiwan, as most destructive seismic hazards arise due to in-land earthquakes. These likely cause the lead-time provided by regional EEW systems before a destructive earthquake wave arrives to become null. On the other hand, an on-site EEW system can provide more lead-time at a region closer to an epicenter, since only seismic information of the target site is required. Instead of leveraging the information of several stations, the on-site system extracts some P-wave features from the first few seconds of vertical ground acceleration of a single station and performs a prediction of the oncoming earthquake intensity at the same station according to these features. Since seismometers could be triggered by non-earthquake events such as a passing of a truck or other human activities, to reduce the likelihood of false alarms, a seismometer was installed at three different locations on the same site and the performance of the EEW system for these three sensor locations were discussed. The results show that the location on the ground of the first floor of a school building maybe a good choice, since the false alarms could be reduced and the cost for installation and maintenance is the lowest. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake%20early%20warning" title="earthquake early warning">earthquake early warning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=on-site" title=" on-site"> on-site</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismometer%20location" title=" seismometer location"> seismometer location</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=support%20vector%20machine" title=" support vector machine"> support vector machine</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48504/performance-of-on-site-earthquake-early-warning-systems-for-different-sensor-locations" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48504.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">244</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">288</span> Generic Early Warning Signals for Program Student Withdrawals: A Complexity Perspective Based on Critical Transitions and Fractals</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sami%20Houry">Sami Houry</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Complex systems exhibit universal characteristics as they near a tipping point. Among them are common generic early warning signals which precede critical transitions. These signals include: critical slowing down in which the rate of recovery from perturbations decreases over time; an increase in the variance of the state variable; an increase in the skewness of the state variable; an increase in the autocorrelations of the state variable; flickering between different states; and an increase in spatial correlations over time. The presence of the signals has management implications, as the identification of the signals near the tipping point could allow management to identify intervention points. Despite the applications of the generic early warning signals in various scientific fields, such as fisheries, ecology and finance, a review of literature did not identify any applications that address the program student withdrawal problem at the undergraduate distance universities. This area could benefit from the application of generic early warning signals as the program withdrawal rate amongst distance students is higher than the program withdrawal rate at face-to-face conventional universities. This research specifically assessed the generic early warning signals through an intensive case study of undergraduate program student withdrawal at a Canadian distance university. The university is non-cohort based due to its system of continuous course enrollment where students can enroll in a course at the beginning of every month. The assessment of the signals was achieved through the comparison of the incidences of generic early warning signals among students who withdrew or simply became inactive in their undergraduate program of study, the true positives, to the incidences of the generic early warning signals among graduates, the false positives. This was achieved through significance testing. Research findings showed support for the signal pertaining to the rise in flickering which is represented in the increase in the student’s non-pass rates prior to withdrawing from a program; moderate support for the signals of critical slowing down as reflected in the increase in the time a student spends in a course; and moderate support for the signals on increase in autocorrelation and increase in variance in the grade variable. The findings did not support the signal on the increase in skewness of the grade variable. The research also proposes a new signal based on the fractal-like characteristic of student behavior. The research also sought to extend knowledge by investigating whether the emergence of a program withdrawal status is self-similar or fractal-like at multiple levels of observation, specifically the program level and the course level. In other words, whether the act of withdrawal at the program level is also present at the course level. The findings moderately supported self-similarity as a potential signal. Overall, the assessment of the signals suggests that the signals, with the exception with the increase of skewness, could be utilized as a predictive management tool and potentially add one more tool, the fractal-like characteristic of withdrawal, as an additional signal in addressing the student program withdrawal problem. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=critical%20transitions" title="critical transitions">critical transitions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fractals" title=" fractals"> fractals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=generic%20early%20warning%20signals" title=" generic early warning signals"> generic early warning signals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=program%20student%20withdrawal" title=" program student withdrawal "> program student withdrawal </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74462/generic-early-warning-signals-for-program-student-withdrawals-a-complexity-perspective-based-on-critical-transitions-and-fractals" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74462.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">185</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">287</span> X-Ray Detector Technology Optimization In CT Imaging</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aziz%20Ikhlef">Aziz Ikhlef</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Most of multi-slices CT scanners are built with detectors composed of scintillator - photodiodes arrays. The photodiodes arrays are mainly based on front-illuminated technology for detectors under 64 slices and on back-illuminated photodiode for systems of 64 slices or more. The designs based on back-illuminated photodiodes were being investigated for CT machines to overcome the challenge of the higher number of runs and connection required in front-illuminated diodes. In backlit diodes, the electronic noise has already been improved because of the reduction of the load capacitance due to the routing reduction. This translated by a better image quality in low signal application, improving low dose imaging in large patient population. With the fast development of multi-detector-rows CT (MDCT) scanners and the increasing number of examinations, the clinical community has raised significant concerns on radiation dose received by the patient in both medical and regulatory community. In order to reduce individual exposure and in response to the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) which suggests that all exposures should be kept as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA), every manufacturer is trying to implement strategies and solutions to optimize dose efficiency and image quality based on x-ray emission and scanning parameters. The added demands on the CT detector performance also comes from the increased utilization of spectral CT or dual-energy CT in which projection data of two different tube potentials are collected. One of the approaches utilizes a technology called fast-kVp switching in which the tube voltage is switched between 80kVp and 140kVp in fraction of a millisecond. To reduce the cross-contamination of signals, the scintillator based detector temporal response has to be extremely fast to minimize the residual signal from previous samples. In addition, this paper will present an overview of detector technologies and image chain improvement which have been investigated in the last few years to improve the signal-noise ratio and the dose efficiency CT scanners in regular examinations and in energy discrimination techniques. Several parameters of the image chain in general and in the detector technology contribute in the optimization of the final image quality. We will go through the properties of the post-patient collimation to improve the scatter-to-primary ratio, the scintillator material properties such as light output, afterglow, primary speed, crosstalk to improve the spectral imaging, the photodiode design characteristics and the data acquisition system (DAS) to optimize for crosstalk, noise and temporal/spatial resolution. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computed%20tomography" title="computed tomography">computed tomography</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=X-ray%20detector" title=" X-ray detector"> X-ray detector</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medical%20imaging" title=" medical imaging"> medical imaging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=image%20quality" title=" image quality"> image quality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=artifacts" title=" artifacts"> artifacts</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38510/x-ray-detector-technology-optimization-in-ct-imaging" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38510.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">272</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">286</span> A Review on Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development in Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kudu%20Dangana">Kudu Dangana</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The occurrences of disaster often call for the support of both government and non-government organization. Consequently, disaster relief remains extremely important in disaster management. However, this approach alone does not proactively address the need to adduce the human and environment impacts of future disasters. Recent thinking in the area of disaster management is indicative of the need for a new paradigm that focuses on reducing the risk of disasters with the involvement and participation of communities. This paper reviews the need for communities to place more emphasis on a holistic approach to disaster risk reduction. This approach involves risk assessment, risk reduction, early warning and disaster preparedness in order to effectively address the reduction of social, economic, and environmental costs of disasters nationally and at the global level. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=disaster" title="disaster">disaster</a>, <a
