The Bible frequently emphasizes humility as essential for a right relationship with God and others. In the Old Testament, humility is often associated with wisdom and the fear of the Lord. <a href="/proverbs/22-4.htm">Proverbs 22:4</a> states, "The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life."<br><br>In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of humility. <a href="/philippians/2-5.htm">Philippians 2:5-8</a> describes how Jesus, though being in the form of God, "emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." This passage highlights the self-sacrificial nature of true humility.<br><br>Humility is also a prerequisite for receiving God's grace. <a href="/james/4-6.htm">James 4:6</a> declares, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" Similarly, <a href="/1_peter/5-5.htm">1 Peter 5:5-6</a> exhorts believers to "clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you."<br><br>The practice of humility involves recognizing one's limitations and the need for God's guidance. It is reflected in a life of service, putting others before oneself, and acknowledging that all good things come from God. Humility is not self-deprecation but a truthful assessment of oneself in light of God's holiness and grace.<br><br><b>Reverence</b><br><br>Reverence in the biblical context refers to a deep respect and awe for God, His Word, and His works. It is an attitude of the heart that acknowledges God's majesty, holiness, and authority. Reverence is closely linked to the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom (<a href="/proverbs/9-10.htm">Proverbs 9:10</a>).<br><br>The Bible commands reverence for God in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, reverence is often expressed through worship and obedience to God's commandments. <a href="/leviticus/19-30.htm">Leviticus 19:30</a> instructs, "You must keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary. I am the LORD." This reverence is not merely external but involves an inner attitude of respect and honor towards God.<br><br>In the New Testament, reverence is exemplified in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. <a href="/hebrews/12-28.htm">Hebrews 12:28-29</a> encourages believers, "Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be filled with gratitude, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. For our God is a consuming fire." This passage underscores the seriousness and solemnity with which believers are to approach God.<br><br>Reverence also extends to the way believers treat one another and the created order. <a href="/ephesians/5-21.htm">Ephesians 5:21</a> advises, "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." This mutual submission is a reflection of the reverence believers have for Christ and His teachings.<br><br>In worship, reverence is expressed through prayer, praise, and the reading of Scripture. It involves a conscious awareness of God's presence and a commitment to live in a manner that honors Him.
