<poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Tell your children about it, <t><p class="indent1">And let your children tell their children, <t><p class="indent1">And their children the next generation. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>What the gnawing locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; <t><p class="indent1">And what the swarming locust has left, the creeping locust has eaten; <t><p class="indent1">And what the creeping locust has left, the stripping locust has eaten [in judgment of Judah]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Awake [from your intoxication], you drunkards, and weep; <t><p class="indent1">Wail, all you drinkers of wine, <t><p class="indent1">Because of the [fresh] sweet wine <t><p class="indent1">That is cut off from your mouth. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>For a [pagan and hostile] nation has invaded My land [like locusts], <t><p class="indent1">Mighty and without number; <t><p class="indent1">Its teeth are the teeth of a lion, <t><p class="indent1">And it has the fangs of a lioness. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>It has made My vine (My people) a waste <i>and</i> object of horror, <t><p class="indent1">And splintered <i>and</i> broken My fig tree. <t><p class="indent1">It has stripped them completely bare and thrown them away; <t><p class="indent1">Their branches have become white. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Wail like a virgin [bride] clothed with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>sackcloth <t><p class="indent1">For the bridegroom of her youth [who has died]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>The [daily] grain offering and the drink offering are cut off <t><p class="indent1">From the house of the LORD; <t><p class="indent1">The priests mourn <t><p class="indent1">Who minister to the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The field is ruined, <t><p class="indent1">The ground mourns; <t><p class="indent1">For the grain is ruined, <t><p class="indent1">The new wine is dried up, <t><p class="indent1">The fresh oil fails. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Be ashamed, O farmers; <t><p class="indent1">Wail, O vinedressers, <t><p class="indent1">For the wheat and for the barley, <t><p class="indent1">Because the harvest of the field has perished. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The vine dries up <t><p class="indent1">And the fig tree fails; <t><p class="indent1">The pomegranate, the palm also, and the apple tree, <t><p class="indent1">All the trees of the field dry up, <t><p class="indent1">Indeed, joy dries up <i>and</i> withdraws <t><p class="indent1">From the sons of men. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Clothe yourselves <i>with sackcloth</i> <t><p class="indent1">And lament (cry out in grief), O priests; <t><p class="indent1">Wail, O ministers of the altar! <t><p class="indent1">Come, spend the night in sackcloth [and pray without ceasing], <t><p class="indent1">O ministers of my God, <t><p class="indent1">For the grain offering and the drink offering <t><p class="indent1">Are withheld from the house of your God. <p class="hdg">Starvation and Drought</p><poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Consecrate a fast, <t><p class="indent1">Proclaim a solemn assembly, <t><p class="indent1">Gather the elders <t><p class="indent1">And all the inhabitants of the land <t><p class="indent1">To the house of the LORD your God, <t><p class="indent1">And cry out to the LORD [in penitent pleadings]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Alas for the day! <t><p class="indent1">For the [judgment] day of the LORD is at hand, <t><p class="indent1">And it will come [upon the nation] as a destruction from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Almighty. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Has not the food been cut off before our eyes, <t><p class="indent1">Joy and gladness from the house of our God? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The seeds [of grain] shrivel under the clods, <t><p class="indent1">The storehouses are desolate <i>and</i> empty, <t><p class="indent1">The barns are in ruins <t><p class="indent1">Because the grain is dried up. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>How the animals groan! <t><p class="indent1">The herds of cattle are bewildered <i>and</i> wander aimlessly <t><p class="indent1">Because they have no pasture; <t><p class="indent1">Even the flocks of sheep suffer. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>O LORD, I cry out to You, <t><p class="indent1">For fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, <t><p class="indent1">And the flame has burned up all the trees of the field. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Even the wild animals pant [in longing] for You; <t><p class="indent1">For the water brooks are dried up <t><p class="indent1">And fire has consumed the pastures of the wilderness.<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">1</span> Joel was a prophet of Judah, the Southern Kingdom, and possibly a contemporary of Elisha. After the united kingdom divided, the Kingdom of Judah consisted primarily of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. Judah continued to be ruled by the kings of the Davidic line. Jerusalem was the capital city of Judah. The name “Joel” means “The LORD is God.”<br><span class="footnotesbot">[b]</span> <span class="fnverse">8</span> A coarse cloth made from goat’s hair.
