The Operations Control Centre (OCC) is the <a href="https://aerospacetechreview.com/from-occ-to-iocc-with-diederik-jan-bos-head-of-iocc-sunexpress/">“</a><a href="https://aerospacetechreview.com/from-occ-to-iocc-with-diederik-jan-bos-head-of-iocc-sunexpress/">mission control centre”</a> of an airline, controlling and overseeing crucial activities. By moving to an IOCC, a more seamless flow of information can be achieved, enabling challenges to be addressed more efficiently and effectively.</p> <p>Albayrak additionally noted that this model helped manage the airline’s operations during the 2023 earthquake in Turkey which involved over 200 rescue flights.</p> <blockquote><p><em>“As you may know, we had an earthquake in Turkey in 2023. 11 cities were impacted and we had more more than 200 rescue flights. Can you imagine the stress that we faced during that? Speaking on the push to implement <a href="https://skybrary.aero/articles/4d-trajectory-concept#:~:text=Description,time%20over%20a%20designated%20point.">4D trajectories</a> by 2028, Castillo said:</p> <blockquote><p><em>“It will bring a lot of benefit to the industry in terms of cost savings, efficiency in operations, higher security or safety for operations, and that’s great. Where we believe we can bring a big improvement is to do that you need continuous connectivity and you need seamless connectivity so that you can get the data you can analyse it and optimise it in real time. After renewing their partnership with <a href="https://www.airspace-intelligence.com/">Air Space Intelligence (ASI)</a>, the airline has offered some insight into how it is using tech to push towards its goal of being the most fuel-efficient US airline by 2025. Founded in 2018, ASI is a software-first company that facilitates complex air operations, developing technology that provides critical decision-making support.</p> <p>Through advanced algorithms and machine learning, the AI powering ASI’s Flyways AI Platform analyses weather patterns, winds, turbulence, airspace constraints, and air traffic volume to generate optimised route recommendations. These are based on safety, ATC compliancy, fuel consumption, and time considerations, supporting pilots to choosing the best course of action. By promoting efficiency, the technology has on average delivered five per cent fuel savings and emissions reductions for flights over four hours.</p> <p>Alaska also uses the Flyways Dispatch application to enable dispatchers to actively manage flights and address issues before they can negatively impact operations. Captain Bret Peyton, Managing Director of Network Operations Control at Alaska explained how the real-time insights and decision-making support helps:</p> <blockquote><p><em>“Being a dispatcher requires attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and quick thinking. The moment for change is now.”</em></p></blockquote> <p>The UK airspace infrastructure, originally developed in the 1950s, has become outdated as the industry’s challenges, technological needs, and goals have evolved significantly. Combatting this, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has <a href="https://www.caa.co.uk/newsroom/news/plans-to-upgrade-airspace-unveiled-by-uk-regulator/">launched</a> its plan for modernising UK airspace by 2040.</p> <p>The ‘Airspace Modernisation Strategy, Part 3: Deployment Plan’ sets out a vision for how airspace will change over the coming seven years and serves as a benchmark for measuring the industry’s progress and alignment with the UK CAA’s <a href="https://www.caa.co.uk/commercial-industry/airspace/airspace-modernisation/airspace-modernisation-strategy/about-the-strategy/">Airspace Modernisation Strategy.</a> Released in January 2023, the strategy laid out “a vision for the future of UK airspace to deliver quicker, quieter and cleaner journeys.”</p> <p>With tech evolving rapidly, the industry scaling up, emerging players like drones and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft joining, and sustainability targets looming, the UK CAA is laying the foundations for an extensive overhaul of the UK’s aviation infrastructure. Addressing this ongoing transformation, Aviation Minister Mike Kane said:</p> <blockquote><p><em>“The world of aviation is undergoing a technological revolution and it’s crucial our airspace evolves alongside this. The Civil Aviation Authority’s plan to modernise our airspace will help ease delays, support efforts to decarbonise and reduce noise. Through continued collaboration with industry, this plan will ensure these innovations are safely and effectively integrated into our skies.”</em></p></blockquote> <p>Rob Bishton, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, added:</p> <blockquote><p><em>“Overhauling our airspace is a long-term and complex endeavour, requiring concerted efforts and collaboration from the aerospace industry. It is key to enabling new and innovative technologies to thrive in UK aerospace.
