The relationship between VCA and the Borough of Brooklyn was unique from other production companies in that despite the nationwide popularity of Vitagraph’s films, the content of the films produced by Vitagraph were directly influenced by the cinematic preferences of one specific urban center. In contrast to the national aspirations of the leading production companies of the period such as Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount, and Universal, who set out to attract the broadest audience possible, VCA’s films were aimed to appeal to specific a niche group that embodied Brooklyn’s conservative principles. As a result of the VCA’s alliance with theater owners and movie spectators in Brooklyn, the Vitagraph studio in Midwood became one of the Borough’s most recognizable cultural institutions, and through the production of Vitagraph’s quality films Brooklynites had a significant means of sharing their unique cultural identity with the rest of the United States. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vitagraph%20Company%20of%20America" title="Vitagraph Company of America">Vitagraph Company of America</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Midwood" title=" Midwood"> Midwood</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Brooklyn" title=" Brooklyn"> Brooklyn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vitagrapheville" title=" Vitagrapheville"> Vitagrapheville</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=New%20York%20Motion%20Picture%20History" title=" New York Motion Picture History"> New York Motion Picture History</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=silent%20era" title=" silent era"> silent era</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J.%20Stuart%20Blackton" title=" J. Technical variety attracts a particular attention in the art of animation. Being perceived as a kind of illusion in the beginning; animations commonly used the Flash Sketch technique. Animations artists using the Flash Sketch technique created scenes by drawing them on a blackboard with chalk. The Flash Sketch technique was used by primary animation artists like Emile Cohl, Winsor McCay ande Blackton. And then tools like Magical Lantern, Thaumatrope, Phenakisticope, and Zeotrap were developed and started to be used intensely in the first years of the art of animation. Today, on the other hand, the art of animation is affected by developments in the computer technology. It is possible to create three-dimensional and two-dimensional animations with the help of various computer software. Cut-out technique is among the important techniques being used in the art of animation. Cut-out animation technique is based on the art of paper cutting. Examining cut-out animations; it is observed that they technically resemble the art of paper cutting. The art of paper cutting has a rooted history. It is possible to see the oldest samples of paper cutting in the People’s Republic of China in the period after the 2. century B.C. when the Chinese invented paper. The most popular artist using the cut-out animation technique is the German artist Lotte Reiniger. This study titled “Cut-out Animation as a Technic and Development Inside History Process” will embrace the art of paper cutting, the relationship between the art of paper cutting and cut-out animation, its development within the historical process, animation artists producing artworks in this field, important cut-out animations, and their technical properties. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cut-out" title="cut-out">cut-out</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=paper%20art" title=" paper art"> paper art</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=animation" title=" animation"> animation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=technic" title=" technic"> technic</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62712/cut-out-animation-as-an-technic-and-development-inside-history-process" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62712.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">275</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">43</span> Progression of Trauma: Myth Mess Mastery, Addressing and Grooming</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Bassman">Stuart Bassman</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Services that focus on the synthesis of research and clinical practice are vital in providing efficacious change for the men and women who have been victims of childhood sexual abuse. We highlight an error in this analysis which leads to an incorrect depiction of the parameter region in which diffusion driven instability is possible. We believe that the cause of the oversight is the complexity of stability analyses based on eigenvalues and the dependence on parameters of matrix minors appearing in stability calculations. We regenerate the parameter space where Turing patterns can be seen, and we use the common Lyapunov function (CLF) approach, which is numerically reliable, to further confirm the dependence of the results on diffusion coefficients intensities. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diffusion%20driven%20instability" title="diffusion driven instability">diffusion driven instability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=common%20Lyapunov%20function%20%28CLF%29" title=" common Lyapunov function (CLF)"> common Lyapunov function (CLF)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=turing%20pattern" title=" turing pattern"> turing pattern</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=positive-definite%20matrix" title=" positive-definite matrix"> positive-definite matrix</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/73343/turing-pattern-in-the-oregonator-revisited" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/73343.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">358</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">41</span> Exploring Deep Neural Network Compression: An Overview</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ghorab%20Sara">Ghorab Sara</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Meziani%20Lila"> Meziani Lila</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rubin%20Harvey%20Stuart"> Rubin Harvey Stuart</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The rapid growth of deep learning has led to intricate and resource-intensive deep neural networks widely used in computer vision tasks. However, their complexity results in high computational demands and memory usage, hindering real-time application. To address this, research focuses on model compression techniques. The paper provides an overview of recent advancements in compressing neural networks and categorizes the various methods into four main approaches: network pruning, quantization, network decomposition, and knowledge distillation. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive outline of both the advantages and limitations of each method. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=model%20compression" title="model compression">model compression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deep%20neural%20network" title=" deep neural network"> deep neural network</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pruning" title=" pruning"> pruning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=knowledge%20distillation" title=" knowledge distillation"> knowledge distillation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quantization" title=" quantization"> quantization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low-rank%20decomposition" title=" low-rank decomposition"> low-rank decomposition</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185803/exploring-deep-neural-network-compression-an-overview" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185803.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">43</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">40</span> Electron-Ion Recombination of N^{2+} and O^{3+} Ions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shahin%20%20A.%20Abdel-Naby">Shahin A. Dielectronic recombination (DR) rate coefficients are calculated for boron-like nitrogen and oxygen ions using state-of-the-art multi-configuration Breit-Pauli atomic structure AUTOSTRUCTURE collisional package within the generalized collisional-radiative framework. The calculations are performed in intermediate coupling scheme associated with n = 0 (2 2) and n = 1 (2 3) core-excitations. Good agreements are found between the theoretically convoluted rate coefficients and the experimental measurements performed at CRYRING heavy-ion storage ring for both ions. Fitting coefficients for the rate coefficients are produced for these ions in the temperature range q2(102-107) K, where q is the ion charge before recombination. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Atomic%20data" title="Atomic data">Atomic data</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=atomic%20processes" title=" atomic processes"> atomic processes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electron-ion%20collision" title=" electron-ion collision"> electron-ion collision</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plasma" title=" plasma"> plasma</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/123894/electron-ion-recombination-of-n2-and-o3-ions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/123894.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">167</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">39</span> [Keynote Talk]: Photocatalytic Cleaning Performance of Air Filters for a Binary Mixture</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lexuan%20Zhong">Lexuan Zhong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chang-Seo%20Lee"> Chang-Seo Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fariborz%20Haghighat"> Fariborz Haghighat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Batterman"> Stuart Batterman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=John%20C.%20Little"> John C. Although much research has been devoted to UV-PCO, limited information is available on the UV-PCO behavior tested by the mixtures in literature. This project investigated UV-PCO performance and by-product generation using a single and a mixture of acetone and MEK at 100 ppb each in a single-pass duct system in an effort to obtain knowledge associated with competitive photochemical reactions involved in. The experiments were performed at 20 % RH, 22 °C, and a gas flow rate of 128 m3/h (75 cfm). Results show that acetone and MEK mutually reduced each other’s PCO removal efficiency, particularly negative removal efficiency for acetone. These findings were different from previous observation of facilitatory effects on the adsorption of acetone and MEK on photocatalyst surfaces. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=by-products" title="by-products">by-products</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inhibitory%20effect" title=" inhibitory effect"> inhibitory effect</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mixture" title=" mixture"> mixture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=photocatalytic%20oxidation" title=" photocatalytic oxidation"> photocatalytic oxidation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35549/keynote-talk-photocatalytic-cleaning-performance-of-air-filters-for-a-binary-mixture" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35549.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">498</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">38</span> A Comparison of Double Sided Friction Stir Welding in Air and Underwater for 6mm S275 Steel Plate</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Philip%20Baillie">Philip Baillie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20W.%20Campbell"> Stuart W. The study showed that there was no significant difference in the strength, hardness or fatigue life of the air and underwater specimens. We try to determine if, where, and when to provide a definition, and which definition to choose. We characterize different types of definitions and the different purposes we may have for formulating them, and detail examples of each type. Giving a definition at a certain stage can sometimes be detrimental to the development of the concept image. In such a case, it is advisable to delay the precise definition to a later stage. We describe two models, the 'successive approximation model', and the 'model of the extending definition' that fit such situations. Detailed examples that fit the different models are given based on material taken from a number of textbooks, and analysis of the way the concept is introduced, and where and how its definition is given. Our conclusions, based on this analysis, is that some of the definitions given may cause discontinuities in the learning sequence and constitute obstacles and unnecessary cognitive conflicts in the formation of the concept definition. However, in other cases, the discontinuity in passing from definition to definition actually serves a didactic purpose, is unavoidable for the mathematical evolution of the concept image, and is essential for students to deepen their understanding. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=concept%20image" title="concept image">concept image</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mathematical%20definitions" title=" mathematical definitions"> mathematical definitions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mathematics%20education" title=" mathematics education"> mathematics education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mathematics%20teaching" title=" mathematics teaching"> mathematics teaching</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113149/why-and-when-to-teach-definitions-necessary-and-unnecessary-discontinuities-resulting-from-the-definition-of-mathematical-concepts" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113149.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">129</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">36</span> Interpretation of Ultrasonic Backscatter of Linear FM Chirp Pulses from Targets Having Frequency-Dependent Scattering</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Bradley">Stuart Bradley</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mathew%20Legg"> Mathew Legg</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lilyan%20Panton"> Lilyan Panton</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Ultrasonic remote sensing is a useful tool for assessing the interior structure of complex targets. For these methods, significantly enhanced spatial resolution is obtained if the pulse is coded, for example using a linearly changing frequency during the pulse duration. Such pulses have a time-dependent spectral structure. Interpretation of the backscatter from targets is, therefore, complicated if the scattering is frequency-dependent. While analytic models are well established for steady sinusoidal excitations applied to simple shapes such as spheres, such models do not generally exist for temporally evolving excitations. Therefore, models are developed in the current paper for handling such signals so that the properties of the targets can be quantitatively evaluated while maintaining very high spatial resolution. Laboratory measurements on simple shapes are used to confirm the validity of the models. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=linear%20FM%20chirp" title="linear FM chirp">linear FM chirp</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=time-dependent%20acoustic%20scattering" title=" time-dependent acoustic scattering"> time-dependent acoustic scattering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultrasonic%20remote%20sensing" title=" ultrasonic remote sensing"> ultrasonic remote sensing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultrasonic%20scattering" title=" ultrasonic scattering"> ultrasonic scattering</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62723/interpretation-of-ultrasonic-backscatter-of-linear-fm-chirp-pulses-from-targets-having-frequency-dependent-scattering" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62723.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">316</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">35</span> Modelling Magnetohydrodynamics to Investigate Variation of Shielding Gases on Arc Characteristics in the GTAW Process</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20W.%20Campbell">Stuart W. As a result of each gas having its own unique thermophysical properties, the shielding gas selected can have a major influence on the arc stability, welding speed, weld appearance and geometry, mechanical properties and fume generation. Alternating shielding gases is a relatively new method of discreetly supplying two different shielding gases to the welding region in order to take advantage of the beneficial properties of each gas, as well as the inherent pulsing effects generated. As part of an ongoing process to fully evaluate the effects of this novel supply method, a computational fluid dynamics model has been generated to include the gas dependent thermodynamic and transport properties in order to evaluate the effects that an alternating gas supply has on the arc plasma. While much emphasis is put on operating synergies from acquisitions the evidence provided in this study shows that the difference between the WACCs of the combined firm and the merging firms may have a significant role on the value effect of mergers. These findings suggest that changes in the capital structure of the combined firm, compared to capital structures of the acquirer and the target, play a key role in determining the value of an acquisition. Moreover, findings of this study suggest that reducing the cost of capital of the combined firm, compared to the merging firms, is value creating even in the absence of operating synergies. Furthermore, this study shows that the component of value associated with the difference between the WACCs of the combined firm and the acquirer is mainly determined by leverage of the acquiring firm and the method of payment. While cash payment is value creating, high leverage of the acquirer prior to an acquisition can destroy value by raising the cost of capital of the firm. This is especially important to managers when they are planning an acquisition. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=acquisitions" title="acquisitions">acquisitions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mergers" title=" mergers"> mergers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=synergy" title=" synergy"> synergy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=value" title=" value"> value</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=WACC" title=" WACC"> WACC</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30712/value-of-mergers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30712.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">268</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">33</span> Kant’s Conception of Human Dignity and the Importance of Singularity within Commonality</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francisco%20Lobo">Francisco Lobo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Kant’s household theory of human dignity as a common feature of all rational beings is the starting point of any intellectual endeavor to unravel the implications of this normative notion. Yet, it is incomplete, as it neglects considering the importance of the singularity or uniqueness of the individual. In a first, deconstructive stage, this paper describes the Kantian account of human dignity as one among many conceptions of human dignity. It reads carefully into the original wording used by Kant in German and its English translations, as well as the works of modern commentators, to identify its shortcomings. In a second, constructive stage, it then draws on the theories of Aristotle, Alexis de Tocqueville, John Stuart Mill, and Hannah Arendt to try and enhance the Kantian conception, in the sense that these authors give major importance to the singularity of the individual. The Kantian theory can be perfected by including elements from the works of these authors, while at the same time being mindful of the dangers entailed in focusing too much on singularity. The conclusion of this paper is that the Kantian conception of human dignity can be enhanced if it acknowledges that not only morality has dignity, but also the irreplaceable human individual to the extent that she is a narrative, original creature with the potential to act morally. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=commonality" title="commonality">commonality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dignity" title=" dignity"> dignity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kant" title=" Kant"> Kant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=singularity" title=" singularity"> singularity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98121/kants-conception-of-human-dignity-and-the-importance-of-singularity-within-commonality" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98121.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">283</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">32</span> Application of Western and Islamic Philosophy to Business Ethics</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elmamy%20Ahmedsalem">Elmamy Ahmedsalem</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The world has witnessed the collapse of many corporate giants as a result of unethical behavior in recent decades. This has induced a series of questions by the global community on why such occurrences could happen, even with corporate governance in place. This paper attempts to propose a philosophical approach from an Islamic perspective to be consolidated with current corporate governance in order to confront contemporary dilemmas. In this paper, ethical theories are presented as a discussion followed by their applications to modern cases of financial collapses. Virtue ethics by Aristotle, justice and fairness by John Rawls, deontology by Immanuel Kant, and utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill, are the four theories which can then be contrasted with the paradigm of Muslim scholars. Despite the differences between the fundamental principles of Islamic and Western worldviews, their ethical theories are aimed at making right decisions and solving ethical dilemmas based on what is good for society. Therefore, Islamic principles should be synthesized with Western philosophy to form a more coherent framework. The integration of Islamic and western ethical theories into business is important for sound corporate governance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=business%20ethics" title="business ethics">business ethics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Islamic%20philosophy" title=" Islamic philosophy"> Islamic philosophy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=western%20philosophy" title=" western philosophy"> western philosophy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Western%20and%20Islamic%20worldview%20of%20ethics" title=" Western and Islamic worldview of ethics"> Western and Islamic worldview of ethics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77570/application-of-western-and-islamic-philosophy-to-business-ethics" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77570.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">472</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">31</span> Beauty Representation and Body Politic of Women Writers in Magdalene</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Putri%20Alya%20Ramadhani">Putri Alya Ramadhani</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This research analysed how women writers represent their beauty in a platform called Magdalene. With the vision “Supporting diversity, empowering minds,” Magdalene is a new media that seeks to represent women's voices rarely heard in mainstream media. This research elaborates further on how women writers, through their writing, use their body politic to subvert patriarchal values. This research used a qualitative method with an explorative design by using text analysis based on the representation theory of Stuart Hall and in-dept-interview with Women Writers in Magdalene. The result illustrated that women writers represent their beauty in Magdalene to subvert body and beauty-representation in mainstream discourse. Furthermore, the authors have identified an identity negotiation as tension from inevitable oppression and power towards and from women’s bodies. In addition, Women Writers showed the power of their bodies through the redefinition of beauty practices and self. Hence, they subvert body dichotomy to redefine body values in society. In conclusion, this study shows various representations of beauty and body that are underrepresented in the mainstream media through the innovative new medium, Magdalena. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women%20writers" title="women writers">women writers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=beauty-representation" title=" beauty-representation"> beauty-representation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=body%20politic" title=" body politic"> body politic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new%20media" title=" new media"> new media</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=identity%20negotiation" title=" identity negotiation"> identity negotiation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140948/beauty-representation-and-body-politic-of-women-writers-in-magdalene" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140948.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">174</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">30</span> Phytoestrogen Content of Fermented Lupin Tempeh and Natto</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Niranjani%20Wickramsinghe">Niranjani Wickramsinghe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mario%20Soares"> Mario Soares</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Johnson"> Stuart Johnson</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ranil%20Cooray"> Ranil Cooray</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vijay%20Jayasena"> Vijay Jayasena</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Tempeh is a traditional fermented soya bean food in Indonesia which is produced from de-hulled soya fermented with Rhizopusoligosporus. Natto is a traditional Japanese food made from whole soya bean seed fermentation with the bacteriaBacillus subtilis natto. Lupin is a grain legume with a low content of the phytoestrogenic isoflavones genistein and daidzein compared to soya. However due a comparable nutrition profile and increased cost effectiveness relative to soy, lupin has been substituted into various oriental fermented foods such as tempe and natto. Lupin tempeh and lupin natto were prepared using either WS or DHS. Analysis for genistein and daidzein content was conducted using HPLC for time points zero, 12h, 24h, 36h, 48h and 72h after fermentation. Results revealed that the amount of genistein and daidzein significantly increased with time in both tempeh and natto. Both isoflavones peaked at 48h in lupin tempeh and earlier at 36h in lupin natto. WS tempeh and WS natto had significantly more genistein than WHS tempe and WHS natto. Diadzeincontent of WHS tended to be higher than WS across both products. It is concluded that, fermentation time increased the amount of genistein and daidzein content in both lupin tempeh and natto and the form of lupin raw material used affected the genistein level and to some extent the daidzein content of fermented products. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lupin" title="lupin">lupin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=natto" title=" natto"> natto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soya" title=" soya"> soya</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tempeh" title=" tempeh"> tempeh</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49399/phytoestrogen-content-of-fermented-lupin-tempeh-and-natto" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49399.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">380</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">29</span> Improving Decision Support for Organ Transplant</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ian%20McCulloh">Ian McCulloh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrew%20Placona"> Andrew Placona</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Darren%20Stewart"> Darren Stewart</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniel%20Gause"> Daniel Gause</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kevin%20Kiernan"> Kevin Kiernan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Morgan%20Stuart"> Morgan Stuart</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christopher%20Zinner"> Christopher Zinner</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Cartwright"> Laura Cartwright</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> An estimated 22-25% of viable deceased donor kidneys are discarded every year in the US, while waitlisted candidates are dying every day. There are hundreds of clinical variables involved in making a clinical transplant decision and there is rarely an ideal match. Decision makers exhibit an optimism bias where they may refuse an organ offer assuming a better match is imminent. We propose a semi-parametric Cox proportional hazard model, augmented by an accelerated failure time model based on patient specific suitable organ supply and demand to estimate a time-to-next-offer. Performance is assessed with Cox-Snell residuals and decision curve analysis, demonstrating improved decision support for up to a 5-year outlook. Providing clinical decision makers with quantitative evidence of likely patient outcomes (e.g., time to next offer and the mortality associated with waiting) may improve decisions and reduce optimism bias, thus reducing discarded organs and matching more patients on the waitlist. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=decision%20science" title="decision science">decision science</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=KDPI" title=" KDPI"> KDPI</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimism%20bias" title=" optimism bias"> optimism bias</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=organ%20transplant" title=" organ transplant"> organ transplant</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160221/improving-decision-support-for-organ-transplant" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160221.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">105</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">28</span> An Exploratory Survey Questionnaire to Understand What Emotions Are Important and Difficult to Communicate for People with Dysarthria and Their Methodology of Communicating</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lubna%20Alhinti">Lubna Alhinti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Heidi%20Christensen"> Heidi Christensen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Cunningham"> Stuart Cunningham</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> People with speech disorders may rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technologies to help them communicate. However, the limitations of the current AAC technologies act as barriers to the optimal use of these technologies in daily communication settings. The ability to communicate effectively relies on a number of factors that are not limited to the intelligibility of the spoken words. In fact, non-verbal cues play a critical role in the correct comprehension of messages and having to rely on verbal communication only, as is the case with current AAC technology, may contribute to problems in communication. This is especially true for people’s ability to express their feelings and emotions, which are communicated to a large part through non-verbal cues. This paper focuses on understanding more about the non-verbal communication ability of people with dysarthria, with the overarching aim of this research being to improve AAC technology by allowing people with dysarthria to better communicate emotions. Preliminary survey results are presented that gives an understanding of how people with dysarthria convey emotions, what emotions that are important for them to get across, what emotions that are difficult for them to convey, and whether there is a difference in communicating emotions when speaking to familiar versus unfamiliar people. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=alternative%20and%20augmentative%20communication%20technology" title="alternative and augmentative communication technology">alternative and augmentative communication technology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dysarthria" title=" dysarthria"> dysarthria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=speech%20emotion%20recognition" title=" speech emotion recognition"> speech emotion recognition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=VIVOCA" title=" VIVOCA"> VIVOCA</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115140/an-exploratory-survey-questionnaire-to-understand-what-emotions-are-important-and-difficult-to-communicate-for-people-with-dysarthria-and-their-methodology-of-communicating" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115140.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">163</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">27</span> Heart Rate Variability Responses Pre-, during, and Post-Exercise among Special Olympics Athletes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kearney%20Dover">Kearney Dover</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Viviene%20Temple"> Viviene Temple</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lynneth%20Stuart-Hill"> Lynneth Stuart-Hill</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the beat-to-beat variation in adjacent heartbeats. HRV is a non-invasive measure of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and provides information about the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) nervous systems. The HRV of a well-conditioned heart is generally high at rest, whereas low HRV has been associated with adverse outcomes/conditions, including congestive heart failure, diabetic neuropathy, depression, and hospital admissions. HRV has received very little research attention among individuals with intellectual disabilities in general or Special Olympic athletes. Purpose: 1) Having a longer post-exercise rest and recovery time to establish how long it takes for the athletes’ HRV components to return to pre-exercise levels, 2) To determine if greater familiarization with the testing processes influences HRV. Participants: Two separate samples of 10 adult Special Olympics athletes will be recruited for 2 separate studies. Athletes will be between 18 and 50 years of age and will be members of Special Olympics BC. Anticipated Findings: To answer why the Special Olympics athletes display poor cardiac responsiveness to changes in autonomic modulation during exercise. By testing the cortisol levels in the athletes, we can determine their stress levels which will then explain their measured HRV. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=6MWT" title="6MWT">6MWT</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomic%20modulation" title=" autonomic modulation"> autonomic modulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cortisol%20levels" title=" cortisol levels"> cortisol levels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intellectual%20disability" title=" intellectual disability"> intellectual disability</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83910/heart-rate-variability-responses-pre-during-and-post-exercise-among-special-olympics-athletes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83910.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">308</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26</span> A Randomised, Single-Dose, Two-Period, Cross-Over Phase I Pharmacokinetic Study to Compare TDS®-Diazepam with Rectal Diazepam in Healthy Adult Subjects</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Faisal%20O.%20Al-Otaibi">Faisal O. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of the TDS preparation to deliver diazepam systemically, and to characterize the pharmacokinetic profile of the drug in healthy adult subjects. We conducted a randomized, single-dose, two-period, crossover phase I (pharmacokinetic) comparative study in twelve healthy volunteers. All volunteers received both 10 mg TDS-diazepam topically to the upper chest and 10 mg of the rectal diazepam preparation (Diastat®, 10 mg diazepam gel), with a minimum washout of 14 days between dosing episodes. Both formulations were well tolerated in all volunteers. Following topical application of TDS-diazepam, the mean AUC0-72h was 1241 ng/mL.h and the Cmax 34 ng/mL. The values for rectal Diastat were 4109 ng/mL.h and 300 ng/mL respectively. This proof of concept study demonstrates that the TDS preparation successfully delivered diazepam systemically to adults. As expected, the concentration of diazepam following the TDS application was lower and not bioequivalent to rectal gel. Future development of this unique system is required. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transdermal%20delivery%20system" title="transdermal delivery system">transdermal delivery system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diazepam" title=" diazepam"> diazepam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seizure" title=" seizure"> seizure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bioequivalence" title=" bioequivalence"> bioequivalence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pharmacokinetic" title=" pharmacokinetic"> pharmacokinetic</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12728/a-randomised-single-dose-two-period-cross-over-phase-i-pharmacokinetic-study-to-compare-tds-diazepam-with-rectal-diazepam-in-healthy-adult-subjects" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12728.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">425</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">25</span> Atlantic Sailfish (Istiophorus albicans) Distribution off the East Coast of Florida from 2003 to 2018 in Response to Sea Surface Temperature</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Meredith%20M.%20Pratt">Meredith M. Off the eastern coast of Florida, charter boats often target this species. Stuart, Florida, bills itself as the sailfish capital of the world. Sailfish tag data from The Billfish Foundation and NOAA was used to determine the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and the distribution of Atlantic sailfish caught and released over a fifteen-year period (2003 to 2018). Tagging information was collected from local sports fishermen in Florida. Using the time and location of each landed sailfish, a satellite-derived SST value was obtained for each point. The purpose of this study was to determine if sea surface warming was associated with changes in sailfish distribution. On average, sailfish were caught at 26.16 ± 1.70°C (x̄ ± s.d.) over the fifteen-year period. The most sailfish catches occurred at temperatures ranging from 25.2°C to 25.5°C. Over the fifteen-year period, sailfish catches decreased at lower temperatures (~23°C and ~24°C) and at 31°C. At ~25°C and ~30°C there was no change in catch numbers of sailfish. From 26°C to 29°C, there was an increase in the number of sailfish. Based on these results, increasing ocean temperatures will have an impact on the distribution and habitat utilization of sailfish. Warming sea surface temperatures create a need for more policy and regulation to protect the Atlantic sailfish and related highly migratory billfish species. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=atlantic%20sailfish" title="atlantic sailfish">atlantic sailfish</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Billfish" title=" Billfish"> Billfish</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=istiophorus%20albicans" title=" istiophorus albicans"> istiophorus albicans</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sea%20surface%20temperature" title=" sea surface temperature"> sea surface temperature</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/122272/atlantic-sailfish-istiophorus-albicans-distribution-off-the-east-coast-of-florida-from-2003-to-2018-in-response-to-sea-surface-temperature" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/122272.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">143</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">24</span> Informing Lighting Designs Through a Comprehensive Review of Light Pollution Impacts</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stephen%20M.%20Simmons">Stephen M. Much research has been conducted in order to study the effects of artificial light at night, and many adverse impacts have been discovered, such as circadian disruption, degradation of the night sky, and interference oftheprocesses and behaviors of plants and animals. Despite a plethora of informationin the literature regarding the numerous illeffects of this type of pollution, there does not appear to be a complete summary of these impacts, including their magnitudes, which would facilitate the balancing of risks and benefits in the design of an exterior lighting system. This paperprovides a comprehensive review of the known impacts of light pollution, divided into four categories - human health, night sky, plants, and animals; additionally, it includes a synopsis of what likely remains unknown at this point in time. This review will attempt to showcase the relative significance of differentimpacts within each category, as well as their sensitivity to changes in lighting specifications (brightness, color temperature, shielding, and mounting height). Methods to be employed in this research include an extensive literature review and the gathering of expert knowledge and opinions. The findings of this review will be used to inform the creation of an optimized lighting design for the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus. It is hoped that future research willexplore the known impacts of light pollution further, as well as search for what still remains to be found regarding the consequencesof artificial light at night. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=comprehensive%20review" title="comprehensive review">comprehensive review</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=impacts" title=" impacts"> impacts</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=light%20pollution" title=" light pollution"> light pollution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lighting%20design" title=" lighting design"> lighting design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=literature%20review" title=" literature review"> literature review</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147466/informing-lighting-designs-through-a-comprehensive-review-of-light-pollution-impacts" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147466.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">23</span> Functional Profiling of a Circular RNA from the Huntingtin (HTT) Gene</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Gantley">Laura Gantley</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vanessa%20M.%20Conn"> Vanessa M. The most common of these, Huntington’s disease, results from the expansion of the CAG repeat region in exon 1 of the HTT gene via an unknown mechanism. Non-coding RNAs have been implicated in the initiation and progression of many diseases; thus, we focus on one circular RNA (circRNA) molecule arising from non-canonical splicing (back splicing) of HTT pre-mRNA. This circRNA and its mouse orthologue were transgenically overexpressed in human cells (SHSY-5Y and HEK293T) and mouse cells (Mb1), respectively. High-content imaging and flow cytometry demonstrated the overexpression of this circRNA reduces cell proliferation, reduces nuclear size independent of cellular size, and alters cell cycle progression. Analysis of protein by western blot and immunofluorescence demonstrated no change to HTT protein levels but altered nuclear-cytoplasmic distribution without impacting the expansion of the HTT repeat region. As these phenotypic and genotypic changes are found in Huntington’s disease patients, these results may suggest that this circRNA may play a functional role in the progression of Huntington’s disease. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cell%20biology" title="cell biology">cell biology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=circular%20RNAs" title=" circular RNAs"> circular RNAs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Huntington%E2%80%99s%20disease" title=" Huntington’s disease"> Huntington’s disease</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=molecular%20biology" title=" molecular biology"> molecular biology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neurodegenerative%20disorders" title=" neurodegenerative disorders"> neurodegenerative disorders</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156572/functional-profiling-of-a-circular-rna-from-the-huntingtin-htt-gene" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156572.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">99</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">22</span> Little Retrieval Augmented Generation for Named Entity Recognition: Toward Lightweight, Generative, Named Entity Recognition Through Prompt Engineering, and Multi-Level Retrieval Augmented Generation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sean%20W.%20T.%20Bayly">Sean W. Our proposed Multi-Level Information Retrieval method achieves notable improvements over finetuned entity-level and sentence-level methods. We consider recent developments at the cross roads of prompt engineering and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), such as EmotionPrompt. We conclude that language models directed toward this task are highly capable when distinguishing between positive classes (precision). However, smaller models seem to struggle to find all entities (recall). Poorly defined classes such as ”Miscellaneous” exhibit substantial declines in performance, likely due to the ambiguity it introduces to the prompt. This is partially resolved through a self verification method using engineered prompts containing knowledge of the stricter class definitions, particularly in areas where their boundaries are in danger of overlapping, such as the conflation between the location ”Britain” and the nationality ”British”. Finally, we explore correlations between model performance on the GNER task with performance on relevant academic benchmarks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=generative%20named%20entity%20recognition" title="generative named entity recognition">generative named entity recognition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=information%20retrieval" title=" information retrieval"> information retrieval</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lightweight%20artificial%20intelligence" title=" lightweight artificial intelligence"> lightweight artificial intelligence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prompt%20engineering" title=" prompt engineering"> prompt engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=personal%20information%20identification" title=" personal information identification"> personal information identification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=retrieval%20augmented%20generation" title=" retrieval augmented generation"> retrieval augmented generation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self%20verification" title=" self verification"> self verification</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/189305/little-retrieval-augmented-generation-for-named-entity-recognition-toward-lightweight-generative-named-entity-recognition-through-prompt-engineering-and-multi-level-retrieval-augmented-generation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/189305.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">46</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">21</span> The Genetic Architecture Underlying Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Singaporeans</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Feng%20Ji%20Mervin%20Goh">Feng Ji Mervin Goh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Edmund%20Chee%20Jian%20Pua"> Edmund Chee Jian Pua</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Alexander%20Cook"> Stuart Alexander Cook</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common cause of heart failure. Genetic mutations account for 50% of DCM cases with TTN mutations being the most common, accounting for up to 25% of DCM cases. However, the genetic architecture underlying Asian DCM patients is unknown. We evaluated 68 patients (female= 17) with DCM who underwent follow-up at the National Heart Centre, Singapore from 2013 through 2014. Clinical data were obtained and analyzed retrospectively. Genomic DNA was subjected to next-generation targeted sequencing. Nextera Rapid Capture Enrichment was used to capture the exons of a panel of 169 cardiac genes. DNA libraries were sequenced as paired-end 150-bp reads on Illumina MiSeq. Raw sequence reads were processed and analysed using standard bioinformatics techniques. The average age of onset of DCM was 46.1±10.21 years old. The average left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular diastolic internal diameter (LVIDd), left ventricular systolic internal diameter (LVIDs) were 26.1±11.2%, 6.20±0.83cm, and 5.23±0.92cm respectively. The frequencies of mutations in major DCM-associated genes were as follows TTN (5.88% vs published frequency of 20%), LMNA (4.41% vs 6%), MYH7 (5.88% vs 4%), MYH6 (5.88% vs 4%), and SCN5a (4.41% vs 3%). The average callability at 10 times coverage of each major gene were: TTN (99.7%), LMNA (87.1%), MYH7 (94.8%), MYH6 (95.5%), and SCN5a (94.3%). In conclusion, TTN mutations are not common in Singaporean DCM patients. The frequencies of other major DCM-associated genes are comparable to frequencies published in the current literature. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heart%20failure" title="heart failure">heart failure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dilated%20cardiomyopathy" title=" dilated cardiomyopathy"> dilated cardiomyopathy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genetics" title=" genetics"> genetics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=next-generation%20sequencing" title=" next-generation sequencing"> next-generation sequencing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18107/the-genetic-architecture-underlying-dilated-cardiomyopathy-in-singaporeans" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18107.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">243</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">20</span> The Reception of Disclosure of Sexual Teens in Media </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rizky%20Kertanegara">Rizky Kertanegara</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Reception studies is one of the cultural studies lately evolved in the realm of communication science. However, the use of data science in the finance and insurance industry is growing quickly for several reasons, including an abundance of reliable customer data, ferocious competition requiring more accurate pricing, etc. Among the top use cases of data science, we find pricing optimization, customer segmentation, customer risk assessment, fraud detection, marketing, and triage analytics. The objective of this paper is to present an application of the generalized additive model (GAM) on a commercial automobile insurance product: an individually rated commercial automobile. These are vehicles used for commercial purposes, but for which there is not enough volume to apply pricing to several vehicles at the same time. The GAM model was selected as an improvement over GLM for its ease of use and its wide range of applications. The model was trained using the largest split of the data to determine model parameters. The remaining part of the data was used as testing data to verify the quality of the modeling activity. We used the Gini coefficient to evaluate the performance of the model. For long-term monitoring, commonly used metrics such as RMSE and MAE will be used. Another topic of interest in the insurance industry is to process of producing the model. We will discuss at a high level the interactions between the different teams with an insurance company that needs to work together to produce a model and then monitor the performance of the model over time. Moreover, we will discuss the regulations in place in the insurance industry. Finally, we will discuss the maintenance of the model and the fact that new data does not come constantly and that some metrics can take a long time to become meaningful. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=insurance" title="insurance">insurance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=data%20science" title=" data science"> data science</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modeling" title=" modeling"> modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monitoring" title=" monitoring"> monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regulation" title=" regulation"> regulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=processes" title=" processes"> processes</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159487/commercial-automobile-insurance-a-practical-approach-of-the-generalized-additive-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159487.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">76</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">18</span> Perspectives of charitable organisations on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family carers of people with profound and multiple intellectual disabilities.</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mark%20Linden">Mark Linden</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Trisha%20Forbes"> Trisha Forbes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Brown"> Michael Brown</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lynne%20Marsh"> Lynne Marsh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Truesdale"> Maria Truesdale</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Todd"> Stuart Todd</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nathan%20Hughes"> Nathan Hughes</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a reduction of health care services for many family carers of people with profound and multiple intellectual disabilities (PMID). Due to lack of services, family carers turned to charities for support during the pandemic. We explored the views of charity workers across the UK and Ireland who supported family carers during the COVID-19 pandemic and explored their views on effective online support programmes for family carers. Methods This was a qualitative study using online focus groups with participants (n = 24) from five charities across the UK and Ireland. Questions focused on challenges, supports, coping and resources which helped during lockdown restrictions. Focus groups were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed through thematic analysis. Findings Four themes were identified (i) ‘mental and emotional health’, (ii) ‘they who shout the loudest’ (fighting for services), (iii) ‘lack of trust in statutory services’ and (iv) ‘creating an online support programme’. Mental and emotional health emerged as the most prominent theme and included three subthemes named as ‘isolation’, ‘fear of COVID-19’ and ‘the exhaustion of caring’. Conclusions The withdrawal of many services during the COVID-19 pandemic further isolated and placed strain on family carers. Even after the end of the pandemic family cares continue to report on the struggle to receive adequate support. There is a critical need to design services, including online support programmes, in partnership with family carers which adequately address their needs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intellectual%20disability" title="intellectual disability">intellectual disability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=family%20carers" title=" family carers"> family carers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=COVID-19" title=" COVID-19"> COVID-19</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=charities" title=" charities"> charities</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177582/perspectives-of-charitable-organisations-on-the-impact-of-the-covid-19-pandemic-on-family-carers-of-people-with-profound-and-multiple-intellectual-disabilities" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177582.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">74</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> Wellbeing Warriors: A Randomized Controlled Trial Examining the Effect of Martial Arts Training on Mental Health Outcomes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Brian%20Moore">Brian Moore</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Woodcock"> Stuart Woodcock</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dean%20Dudley"> Dean Dudley</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Mental health problems have significant social and economic consequences; however, many individuals do not seek traditional assistance for mental health difficulties. Martial arts training may provide an inexpensive alternative to traditional psychological therapy. While limited research has suggested martial arts training may be an efficacious intervention, the validity and reliability of this are questionable given the small number of relevant studies and other methodological problems. The study examined the effects of 10-week martial arts-based psycho-social intervention which was evaluated using a randomized controlled trial. The intervention was delivered to 283 secondary school students, aged between 12-14 years, who were recruited from government and catholic secondary schools in New South Wales, Australia. The intervention was delivered in a group format onsite at participating schools and had an intervention dose of 10 x 50-60 minute sessions, once per week for 10 weeks. Data were collected at baseline, post-intervention, and 12-week follow-up. Results found a consistent pattern for strength based wellbeing outcomes. All primary and secondary measures relating to resilience and self-efficacy improved for the intervention group and declined for the control group. As these findings were derived from a robust design and rigorous evaluation, they provide valid and reliable evidence that martial arts-based psycho-social interventions can be considered as an efficacious method of improving strength and wellbeing outcomes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=martial%20arts" title="martial arts">martial arts</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mental%20health" title=" mental health"> mental health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=resilience" title=" resilience"> resilience</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-efficacy" title=" self-efficacy"> self-efficacy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/102686/wellbeing-warriors-a-randomized-controlled-trial-examining-the-effect-of-martial-arts-training-on-mental-health-outcomes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/102686.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">160</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">16</span> Acceptability of the Carers-ID Intervention for Family Carers of People with Intellectual Disabilities</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mark%20Linden">Mark Linden</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Brown"> Michael Brown</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lynne%20Marsh"> Lynne Marsh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Truesdale"> Maria Truesdale</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stuart%20Todd"> Stuart Todd</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nathan%20Hughes"> Nathan Hughes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Trisha%20Forbes"> Trisha Forbes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rachel%20Leonard"> Rachel Leonard</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: Family carers of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) face ongoing challenges in accessing services and often experience poor mental health. Online support programmes may prove effective in addressing the mental health and well-being needs of family carers. This study sought to test the acceptability of a newly developed online support programme for carers of people with intellectual disabilities called Carers-ID. Methods A sequential mixed-methods explanatory design was utilised. An adapted version of the Acceptability of Health Apps among Adolescents (AHAA) Scale was distributed to family carers who had viewed the Carers-ID.com intervention. Following this, participants were invited to take part in an online interview. Interview questions focused on participants’ experiences of using the programme and its acceptability. Qualitative and quantitative data were analysed separately and then brought together through the triangulation protocol developed by Farmer et al (2006). Findings: Seventy family carers responded to the acceptability survey, whilst 10 took part in interviews. Six themes were generated from interviews with family carers. Based on our triangulation, four areas of convergence were identified, these included, programme usability and ease, attitudes towards the programme, perceptions of effectiveness, and programme relatability. Conclusions: In order to be acceptable, online interventions for carers of people with ID need to be accessible, understandable and easy to use, as carers time is precious. Further research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of online interventions for family carers, specifically considering which carers the intervention works for, and for whom it may not. <p
