Fall für Inspektor Pekkala. Dieses Mal muss er das Geheimnis rund um die heiligste Ikone Russlands lüften, die im 1. Weltkrieg angeblich vernichtet wurde und dennoch jetzt, Anfang 1945, in einem kleinen Ort an der Westfront wieder auftaucht. Doch eine Sekte beschützt die Ikone und will verhindern, dass die Rätsel um ihr Verschwinden aufgeklärt werden, und sie nach ihrem Wiederauftauchen noch einmal für die Machtspiele der Regierenden missbraucht werden könnte.</p><h3>Ein ungewöhnlicher Protagonist in unruhigen Zeiten</h3><p>Es wäre von Nutzen, die fünf ersten Bänden der Reihe zu kennen, denn Eastland geizt mit der erneuten Beschreibung seines Protagonisten. Wir erfahren, dass er aus Finnland stammt, als persönlicher Ermittler des Zaren diente und ein Medaillon trägt, das ihm den in ganz Russland bekannten Namen „Smaragdauge“ eintrug. Im Laufe der Handlung wird klar, dass seine Stellung als persönlicher Ermittler einzigartig sein muss, denn er pflegt Kontakt mit der Zarenfamilie, geht in den Palasträumen ein und aus und scheint die Gunst des Zaren zu besitzen. Obwohl wenig über Pekkala gesagt wird, ist er als Person doch ziemlich ungewöhnlich und als Protagonist erst recht. Er scheint im Halbdunkeln zu ermitteln, sich nicht immer ganz legaler Methoden zu bedienen und eine Art „1-Mann-Abteilung“ zu sein, der man besser aus dem Weg geht oder sich zumindest nicht in den gleichen stellt, handelt er doch im Auftrag des Zaren.</p><p>Auch nach dem Untergang des Zarenreiches kommt Pekkala wieder in den Genuss der Anerkennung der Regierenden. Diesmal ist es Stalin, der ihn wieder in Diensten nimmt. Der Leser kann Pekkala durch sehr unruhige Zeiten begleiten. Russland steht im 1. Weltkrieg an der Seite Österreich-Ungarns gegen Deutschland, die Verluste sind enorm und die Angst den Krieg zu verlieren ist groß. Zar Nikolaus II regiert das riesige Reich, an seiner Seite Zarin Alexandra und seine Kinder. Dann der Schnitt in die Endphase des 2. Weltkrieges. Wir erfahren, dass Pekkala nach der Oktoberrevolution im Gulag Borodok inhaftiert war und jetzt als Inspektor für die Rote Armee arbeitet. Und wieder ist Krieg. Die Sowjetunion kämpft gegen Nazi-Deutschland, regiert von Stalins eiserner Hand.</p><script type='text/javascript'>OA_show(37);</script><h3>Viel historischer Hintergrund, aber wenig Spannung</h3><p>Obwohl man weiß, was die Zarenfamilie erwartete, wie sich Russland nach der Oktoberrevolution entwickelte und, wie die Abläufe des 2.Weltkrieges waren, ist es Eastland gelungen dem Leser diese Zeiten noch einmal anschaulich vor Augen zu halten. Es ist interessant zu lesen, mit welchem Pomp die Zarenfamilie umgeben war, aber auch, wie ihr Umfeld nur so zitterte in der ständigen Angst in Misskredit zu fallen. Eastland gewährt Einblicke in den Alltag am Hof, genauso wie in die Wohnung Rasputins, des Vertrauten der Zarin. Man kann eintauchen in eine andere Welt, die auch geprägt war vom russisch-orthodoxen Glauben und mit ihm der Glaube an die Kraft der Ikonen. Allen voran „Der Hirte“, eine Ikone, die dem Zaren spirituellen Schutz gewährte und somit die heiligste Ikone überhaupt war.</p><p>Auch die Lebensumstände in der Sowjetunion unter Stalin hat der Autor gut beschrieben. Zwar ist mir nicht ganz klar, wie ein Vertrauter des Zaren wieder eine Ausnahmestellung in dieser Zeit erlangen konnte, dennoch, der Machtmensch Stalin und die Umstände, in der Sowjetunion zu diesen Zeiten zu leben, sind doch sehr interessant wiedergegeben. Aber „Rote Ikone“ ist kein Historienroman, sondern ein Kriminalroman. Doch für einen guten Krimi fehlt einfach die Spannung während der gesamten Handlung.</p><p>Die Ikone geht verloren, wird wiedergefunden, Pekkala ermittelt, was mit ihr geschah nachdem sie angeblich vernichtet wurde und eine ominöse Sekte will das verhindern. Und das alles unter Stalin, der die Ausübung der christlichen Religion verboten hat? Wo bleibt da die Logik? Hätte er nicht einfach ein Feuerchen mit der Ikone angefacht oder sie in seiner privaten Kunstsammlung verschwinden lassen?</p><p>Dass Pekkala schon in das Verschwinden des Hirten involviert war und jetzt wieder auf ihn angesetzt wird und dabei einer Verschwörung auf die Spur kommt, macht das Ganze auch nicht spannender, denn die Frage nach dem Warum ist immer präsent. Wirkliche Spannung kommt nie auf, der Spannungsbogen ist eigentlich nicht vorhanden, auch wenn Eastland durch einige Wendungen und Zeitsprünge in die Vergangenheit bemüht ist, diesen zu erzeugen. Der überraschende und ebenso unlogische Schluss beendet eine Geschichte, die gut erzählt ist, teilweise menschlich berührt, aber meilenweit entfernt ist von einem Kriminalroman.</p><h2>Fazit:</h2><p>Wenn Sie gerne Romane mit historischem Kontext lesen, sind Sie hier richtig. Zarenreich und Sowjetunion bilden einen gut beschriebenen Hintergrund für eine Geschichte, die mehr die Lebensumstände und die Religiösität der Menschen zum Thema hat, als eine ausgefeilt spannende Kriminalgeschichte. Auch die wenigen Wendungen retten den Leser nicht vor dem Wegdösen, verhindern aber eine vorzeitige Verbannung ins Bücherregal. Wer mit „Rote Ikone“ in die Serie einsteigt, wird wahrscheinlich nicht in Versuchung kommen die fünf Vorgänger zu lesen. Wer diese aber kennt, wird mit dem Stil des Autors zufrieden sein und sollte Pekkala, dem ungewöhnlichen Ermittler, die Treue halten.</p></p></span><div class="foot-book"><div
