itemprop="headline">About Worldcon 75</h1> </header><div class="entry-content" itemprop="text"><h2>What is Worldcon?</h2> <p>The <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170729150046/http://www.worldcon.org/">World Science Fiction Convention (“Worldcon”)</a> is an international gathering of the science fiction and fantasy community, with a great tradition behind it. The first Worldcon was held in 1939, and, after a break during WWII, the event has been held annually since 1946, with the location changing each year. Although some locations have hosted Worldcon many times over the years, Worldcon 75, in August 2017, will be the first Worldcon ever to be held in Helsinki. We are proud of this, and of the opportunity to share Finland with Worldcon – and Worldcon with Finland.</p> <p>Modern Worldcons are held over five days and are attended by thousands of members – we expect around 5,000 people at Worldcon 75. Attendees include writers, artists, fans, editors, publishers, academics and dealers, all with an interest in science fiction.</p> <p>Worldcons are not just about the written word. Over the decades Worldcons have grown to embrace science fiction in all the forms in which it appears, including film, TV, art, comics, anime and manga, and gaming. At the convention itself, there will be hundreds of <a href="/web/20170729150046/http://www.worldcon.fi/whats-on/">programme items</a> which all members can attend, as well as major events such as the Hugo Awards ceremony and Masquerade. Each Worldcon invites a small number of <a href="/web/20170729150046/http://www.worldcon.fi/goh/">Guests of Honour</a>, recognising their contribution to the field and the community of science fiction. The guests’ work and interests usually inspire significant elements within the programme. In addition to the Guests of Honour, there are usually other guests as well, appearing in specific events or roles.</p> <p>There will also be <a href="/web/20170729150046/http://www.worldcon.fi/whats-on/exhibits-halls/">exhibits,</a> a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170729150046/http://beta.worldcon.fi/whats-on/exhibits-halls/traders/">Trade Hall with dealers</a>, and an <a href="/web/20170729150046/http://www.worldcon.fi/whats-on/exhibits-halls/art-show/">art show</a> and auction, and many fun and social aspects to the Worldcon throughout the day.</p> <p>A complete programme will be posted on the web site shortly before the convention, so you can start planning each day (information about particular highlights is already available, not least to inform people who
