He was Associate Director (Global Technology Awareness, the US Navy Ambassador to Japan) at The US Office of Naval Research – Global Tokyo Office from 2010 till 2014. He was also the Founder and Senior Vice President & CTO of Micromechatronics Inc., State College, PA from 2004 till 2010. After being awarded his Ph. D. degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, he became Research Associate/Assistant Professor (1976) in Physical Electronics Department at this university. Then, he joined Sophia University, Japan as Associate Professor in Physics Department in 1985. He was then recruited from The Penn State University in 1991. He was also involved with Space Shuttle Utilizing Committee in NASDA, Japan during 1986-88, and Vice President of NF Electronic Instruments, USA, during 1992-94. He was the Founding Chair of Smart Actuators/Sensors Committee, Japan Technology Transfer Association sponsored by Ministry of Economics, Trading and Industries, Japan from 1987 to 2014, and is a long-term Chair of International Conference on New Actuators, Messe Bremen, Germany since 1997. He is currently Editor in Chief of J. Actuators, MDPI and J. Insight-Material Science, PiscoMed Publishing LLT. Uchino served as Administrative Committee Member (Elected) of IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control (1998-2000) and as Secretary of American Ceramic Society, Electronics Division (2002-2003). His research interest is in solid state physics, especially in ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics, including basic research on theory, materials, device designing and fabrication processes, as well as application development of solid state actuators/sensors for precision positioners, micro-robotics, ultrasonic motors, smart structures, piezoelectric transformers and energy harvesting. K. He also worked on confidential industrial collaborative projects with Masdar Institute. He is a graduate (Master in Chemistry) from Ghent University (Ghent, Belgium) and holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry (1982) and one in Materials (Textile) Technology (1987). He was Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Ghent University (2002-2004). He was the executive coordinator of AUTEX (Association of Universities for Textiles) from 1994 till 2020 and the former president of ENMat (European Network of Materials Research Centres). Since 2021 he is Professor Emeritus of Ghent University. Over the years, Prof. Kiekens has been involved in a large number of national and particularly European projects about education and research. He is also a holder of two Master of Science degrees in Physics from Umea University (Sweden) and Mississippi State University (USA) respectively. His undergraduate degree was also in Physics with a minor in Computer Science from the University of Buea (Cameroon). He has done a lot of research with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and chemiluminescence based combustion diagnostics. He has worked as an instructor of records, teaching General Physics II and Physics III (Physics courses for undergraduate students) at MSU. He lectured at MSU for some time all the way through summer 1, 2016. After this, he moved in the fall of 2016 to Mississippi College (MC), where he began his career initially, as a visiting Professor of Physics. He became an Assistant Professor of the Institute of Nanophotonics at the Jinan University in 2016 and became an Assistant to the Dean since 2018, then promoted to Associate Professor in 2019. His main research interests include photonics, plasmonics, nano-optics, detectors, opto electronics and opt thermal mechanisms, especially for fiber optical waveguide, which were supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He was also the Founder and Senior Vice President & CTO of Micromechatronics Inc., State College, PA from 2004 till 2010. After being awarded his Ph. D. degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, he became Research Associate/Assistant Professor (1976) in Physical Electronics Department at this university. Then, he joined Sophia University, Japan as Associate Professor in Physics Department in 1985. He was then recruited from The Penn State University in 1991. He was also involved with Space Shuttle Utilizing Committee in NASDA, Japan during 1986-88, and Vice President of NF Electronic Instruments, USA, during 1992-94. He was the Founding Chair of Smart Actuators/Sensors Committee, Japan Technology Transfer Association sponsored by Ministry of Economics, Trading and Industries, Japan from 1987 to 2014, and is a long-term Chair of International Conference on New Actuators, Messe Bremen, Germany since 1997. He is currently Editor in Chief of J. Actuators, MDPI and J. Insight-Material Science, PiscoMed Publishing LLT. Uchino served as Administrative Committee Member (Elected) of IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control (1998-2000) and as Secretary of American Ceramic Society, Electronics Division (2002-2003). His research interest is in solid state physics, especially in ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics, including basic research on theory, materials, device designing and fabrication processes, as well as application development of solid state actuators/sensors for precision positioners, micro-robotics, ultrasonic motors, smart structures, piezoelectric transformers and energy harvesting. K.
