It has come to the Society's <span style="color: #ff0000;"><u>notice</u> </span>that some unscrupulous elements are collecting money for publishing papers in the Society's Journal and offering bogus certificates. The Asiatic Society does not collect money for publishing in its journal, nor does it guarantee publication, and neither does it issue any certificate. Authors must verify with the Society before submitting any papers, and papers will be published only after rigorous peer review and editing. The Society does not take responsibility for any payments made to third parties claiming to represent the Society, or for their papers appearing in a cloned/spam journal. The session will be moderated by Dr. Gaurav Gadgil.</span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The long occupation of present-day suburban Mumbai ~ Salsette and Vasai ~ by the Portuguese power was a source of harrassment for the local population. Several appeals for help were sent to the Maratha Chhatrapati and Peshwa. In the years 1737 and 1739, a grim battle was waged at the end of which these regions were liberated. Chimaji Appa, Bajirao Peshwa’s brother, led the campaign and after a bloody and stubborn campaign won these regions. It was also the first time a European power had been defeated by a native Asian army.</span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">About Speaker:</span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Uday S. Kulkarni has written eight historical nonfiction books on 18th Century India. An alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and a surgeon by profession, Kulkarni served in the Indian Navy, retiring in the rank of Surgeon Commander.</span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">About Moderator:</span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Dr. Gaurav Gadgil works as an Associate Professor in the School of Civilisation at Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai. The session will be moderated by Mr. Kumar Ketkar.</span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> </span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Many interviewees testified that “The first night in jail is reputed to be the hardest. After that, you learn how to survive, though many prisoners carry lifelong scars.”</span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> </span><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">In the course of long conversations, sometimes over multiple meetings, Ms Kolhatkar was the recipient of personal anecdotes from the time her interviewees were incarcerated, bringing into focus the human face of prison inmates. She has also detailed the wretched conditions relating to space, hygiene, medical attention and food that they experienced and the deterioration of conditions during Covid-19.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Apart from being an urgent call to action for prison reforms, “The Feared” is also an account of hope and strength, narrating unique stories of survival and solidarity, and the unexpected bonds and relationships formed in prison.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><em>Neeta Kolhatkar is an independent journalist. She has 35 years of experience being in the midst of news. She has worked in broadcast, print and online media.
