<div class=" text-offset "> <div class="editor scrolling-tracker"> <p>De nombreux enfants et adolescents attendent le temps des Fêtes avec impatience, mais d’autres anticipent une période difficile marquée par l’anxiété, le stress et la solitude.</p><p>Alisa Simon, chef de la jeunesse à Jeunesse, J’écoute, indique rester aux aguets lorsque les cours sont en pause pour les vacances d’hiver, soulignant une augmentation du nombre de jeunes qui contactent l’organisme.</p><p>Le bien-être émotionnel de certains enfants et adolescents peut être affecté pour plusieurs raisons pendant les Fêtes, selon les professionnels de la santé mentale : les facteurs de stress familiaux, la pression d’agir « joyeusement », le manque de temps passé avec les amis, le stress des examens à venir et le manque général de lumière à cette période de l’année.</p><p>Les experts suggèrent aux parents de favoriser une communication ouverte pendant les vacances et de surveiller tout changement important dans le comportement de leurs enfants.</p><p>Les données de Jeunesse, J’écoute révèlent que 816 650 messages téléphoniques, par texto et en ligne ont été envoyés par des enfants et des jeunes entre le 1<sup>er</sup> novembre et le 31 décembre 2023, contre 779 734 en juillet et août de la même année.</p><p>« Beaucoup de jeunes peuvent se sentir très seuls pendant les vacances », a souligné M<sup>me</sup> Simon.</p><p>« Si la famille n’est pas un endroit où l’on se sent en sécurité ou connecté, cela peut rendre la situation très stressante pour certains jeunes et cela peut également les isoler de ceux avec qui ils sont connectés, comme leurs amis ou leur communauté à l’école. »</p><p>Alisa Simon affirme que les enfants et les adolescents ressentent également « le stress financier ou familial ou les émotions exacerbées qui peuvent survenir autour de leur famille ».</p><p>« Nous nous mettons tous beaucoup de pression pendant les vacances, en particulier si nous avons des jeunes, class="h2-intertitre">La pression d’être joyeux</h2><p>Sandra Newton, psychologue clinicienne et scolaire dans la région de Durham, à l’est de Toronto, note que ce type de pression peut être difficile pour les enfants et les jeunes, surtout s’ils souffrent d’une maladie mentale existante comme l’anxiété ou la dépression.</p><p>Elle a indiqué que certains font semblant d’être « en forme » et d’être un « enfant modèle » s’ils pensent qu’on s’attend à ce qu’ils soient joyeux.</p><p>« L’une des meilleures choses que nous puissions enseigner aux enfants, c’est que nous pouvons intégrer tous les aspects de nous-mêmes. Il y a de la place pour toi, peu importe la difficulté de la période », a-t-elle soutenu.</p><p>« [Cela] n’a pas besoin d’être parfait. C’est la présence [des enfants] que nous valorisons. C’est leur participation aux activités avec la famille que nous valorisons, même si cela doit être un peu différent, même si des pauses sont nécessaires. »</p><p>Les enfants et les adolescents qui reçoivent un traitement pour un problème de santé mentale n’ont souvent pas accès à leur thérapeute, donc beaucoup font une pause pendant les vacances, a-t-elle ajouté.</p><p>Les familles devraient prévoir de normaliser les conversations sur les problèmes de santé mentale de leur enfant avant le début des vacances.</p><p>« [Le parent pourrait dire] : “Est-ce que ça te dérangerait que je prenne de tes nouvelles quelques fois ? […] Comment puis-je le faire sans me sentir intrusif ou gênant ? Je suis là pour t’aider” », a suggéré M<sup>me</sup> Newton.</p><p>« Les enfants ont souvent peur d’être un fardeau pour la personne qui s’occupe d’eux en leur disant que les choses sont difficiles », a-t-elle déclaré.</p><p>« Ils sont en colère contre eux-mêmes, parce qu’ils ont quelque chose en eux qu’ils n’ont pas demandé. Mais nous pouvons constater que c’est difficile. Ils font de leur mieux et, parfois, ils auront besoin que leur proche fasse un effort supplémentaire pour accroître leur soutien. »</p><p>Les parents et les enfants peuvent également faire appel à d’autres sources de soutien, qu’il s’agisse d’un membre de la famille, d’un ami ou d’une ligne d’assistance, a-t-elle souligné.</p><h2 class="h2-intertitre">Une période propice aux problèmes</h2><p>Le D<sup>r</sup> Kevin Gabel, psychiatre pour enfants et adolescents à l’hôpital général de North York, a déclaré qu’une communication régulière avec les enfants est essentielle, soulignant que novembre était un mois chargé pour les visites de santé mentale pédiatrique.</p><p>Il a affirmé que la dépression saisonnière peut commencer en novembre ou en décembre, lorsque les jours raccourcissent et s’assombrissent.</p><p>L’école a également tendance à devenir plus stressante, surtout si les examens approchent au cours de la nouvelle année, a indiqué le D<sup>r</sup> Gabel.</p><p>Il a déclaré qu’il est important que les parents prennent des nouvelles de leurs enfants et de leurs adolescents « et les laissent vraiment exprimer leurs sentiments d’une manière sécuritaire, compréhensive et sans jugement ».</p><p>« Il peut être tentant d’essayer de s’attaquer directement à tous les problèmes, [mais] parfois, le simple fait d’écouter, de montrer que vous comprenez, peut être très puissant et [représenter] une validation », a-t-il remarqué.</p><p>Si certains enfants ne disent pas ce qui les trouble, soyez attentifs aux changements de comportement, selon M. Gabel et M<sup>me</sup> Newton.</p><p>De grands changements d’humeur, un repli sur soi, une réticence à faire des activités qu’ils aiment normalement sont tous des signes potentiels de problèmes s’ils persistent pendant plusieurs jours, a affirmé le D<sup>r</sup> Gabel.</p><h2 class="h2-intertitre">Vivre les émotions ensemble</h2><p>Le décès d’un être cher peut rendre les vacances particulièrement difficiles pour les enfants et les jeunes.</p><p>« Les vacances sont des moments de rassemblement et de concentration en famille. Et si votre famille est différente cette année, ce sera difficile », a souligné M<sup>me</sup> Newton.</p><p>« Les jeunes peuvent se sentir seuls à devoir faire face à ce sentiment de perte ou à regarder les proches le gérer. »</p><p>Alisa Simon a déclaré qu’il est important que les parents et les proches reconnaissent leur chagrin avec leurs enfants.</p><p>« Parfois, en tant que personne qui prend soin, nous essayons de cacher notre propre tristesse parce que nous la considérons comme un fardeau pour les jeunes de notre vie », a-t-elle déclaré.</p><p>« [Ils doivent savoir] qu’il est normal de ressentir ces sentiments.
